ATI card and game crashes? Try turning off dynamic lighting and post processing.

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
As the title says... my game would crash constantly during ground missions, with an ATI 8950. I took a suggestion from an old thread and turned off dynamic lighting and post processing, and it appears to have solved my problem- I played a whole episode without a crash. The next episode I'll experiment more and try which one causes the crash, but for now, I'm happy.

Too bad the server isn't responding at the moment or I'd test straight away...

I post this as a new thread because virtually every thread in this forum is about the same/similar issue, so hopefully this will fix it for most people.

This is a well known fix with many posts about it. This has been an issue since early beta. They need to fix this rather than us, the players, coming up with work arounds.

The problem is most people don't bother reading other posts, they just post a thread without looking. So I'm hoping they'll pay a bit more attention to a thread title slapping them in the face. Maybe. :p

More importantly, I didn't pay $60 to play an ugly game.

As a tester I turned on dynamic lighting for an episode, it crashed. So I've turned that off and turned on post processing (everything else is set to max, including AA). So we'll see how that goes... I just went through an Orion base with no problems, so I have a feeling it's all dynamic lighting's fault.

    I'm using an AT 4870x2

During OB I crashed on ground all the time.

Turned off Dynamic Lighting. Have not crashed since.

I am getting a strange artifact though. The edges of shadows seems to have large stair shapes to them. And if I move the stairs turn into escalators. Its kinda annoying to look at.

None of this fixes my issue unfortunately. ATI 4850 512 meg. Mine gets so overheated that it shuts the computer off within 5 minutes of logging in. I posted this on beta forums on Jan 12 and still no reply from Cryptic. Pathetic. Can't even log into the game long enough to effectively read and comment on the in-game tickets and you get no support here.

I played another couple of episodes, dynamic lighting off and post processing on, game stable as a rock. Success!

I remember one person suggesting typing '/maxfps 30' (without the quotes) into chat in order to put a limit on how much strain the game will put on the video card, have you tried that?

Just enable V-Sync. It will cap your fps at your monitor's refresh rate (usually 60Hz)

For me, turning off dynamic lighting and/or post processing and/or turning all settings down to minimum did nothing. However, the /maxfps DID work, and I had about a week with no crashes anywhere in the game after that.

Its not just the OP, a load of other threads here can attest to that including mine, seems to affect the 5800 series of cards worse.

Whats the deal with this postprocessing effects, it seems to make things look a little less sharp when its on, more colourful but a little blurry, will try the dynamic lighting thing when the server eventually works.

If your card is overheating on the STO launcher click on options and copy and past this into the advanced command line: -maxfps 60

If you do the /maxfps in game then you will have to do it everytime you start up the game. If you use the command line it keeps it even so you wont have to.

Yep, tried that too. I muscled my way thru character creation and was able to play for about 3 minutes with my fan set at 100% instead of the normal 50% and the temp went form 79 to 98 within those 3 minutes. Still not resolved for me. :(

I don't mind disabling dynamic lighting, but postprocessing is a HUGE graphical fallback, this is ridiculous. Come on, fix this, please...

I have been using a Radeon 5750, and the dynamic lighting caused ridiculous amounts of crashes for ground combat alone. Now that I have turned it off, less lag and no crashing. That being said, I'd like to play the game with this function on and not crash.

Using a HD 5870 and my fix is limiting the Dynamic Lights to 3.

You don't need to turn it off, just limit the light sources to 3 and you should be fine. Its hard to notice more than 3 anyways so its a decent fix until they release a patch to fix this.

I have a 4890, and with dynamic lighting turned off the crashes and lag disappear.

I would also like this fixed asap, it has been a problem for quite some time.

ATI user here. STO just started crashing for me today after 139MB patch. 10.1 drivers updated today, previously running 9.12.
Crashes every 10-15 minutes. I could play without any issue s through the whole OB and headstart. Now I can't. I sent two crash reports already. Hope someone will read it.
Also, seems that more people are experiencing crashes after today's patch.

EDIT: forgot to add, that I have AA off, DL off, PP off, and windowed mode now.

Thanks for the warning, I'll skip the latest drivers then if you're crashing even with Dynamic lighting off.. I hope this is fixed man.

I also have issues with my 2x4870's. I have the latest 10.11 drivers - when I solo I rarely have any issues, seems that whenever I group with my fleet I crash regularly during away missions. :(

As do the others in my fleet with ATi cards.

My computer just stalls and either turns off my monitor or displays red and white stripes and/or boxes - only fix is a reboot.

Its not a heat issue as I have a very well ventilated chasis and when I check my heat values all is in perfect order.

Please fix this asap as it is ruining my grouping experience.

For those of you that've tried everything in this thread and have not yet tried the maxfps hack, check out this thread. http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=88393

I've been able to get past the crashing using that workaround (for now).

Likewise for me on a 5770.

Newly built computer with fresh install of Windows 7 home premium 64 bit and latest catalyst drivers.

No problems at all in space combat on full settings.

Ground combat would have significant frame issues, especially when first activating powers such as plasma grenade or target optics. Eventually in heavy fights game and system crashed intermittently, required a hard reboot once, other times client would crash out to desktop with the error reporting.

Turned settings from "full" to "recommended", no more delays or crashes during ground missions, game runs fine. Will sit at these settings until patch notes say otherwise.

I've been having the same issue. But for me it doesn't happen JUST when grouped. It can happen at any point in time.

This started for me on the last 2 days of the OB and then on the frist and second nights of the headstart, I played for a combined 8 1/2 hours without trouble before it started up again. Now I'm at a point where I can play for approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours before losing my video. I put in a ticket about this in OB and one on Sunday when it started happening again. Haven't heard anything yet.

I must admit setting "maxfps" to specific value (I set mine to 35) did the trick. I was able to play today for couple of hours without single crash in windowed mode with AA off, AF x16, DL off, PP off.

I don't know what people say, that the eye can't see beyond 30 fps, because I certainly can see pass it. Well past it. I can easily tell a difference between 30 fps and 60.
