Since server is down, some answers to common questions

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Since the server is down, I figured I'd offer a (sarcastic) list of some answers to common questions for folks since no one can ask in zone chat :p.
  • Yes the servers are down. This happens on most MMOs on launch, and we'll survive past the initial launch outages; have patience. If it helps you feel better, the server guys are being punished by not allowing them to have any more Red Bull until they fix it.
  • Sulu is in the Admiral's office.
  • Lt Commander to get your next ship type: Lvl 11.
  • Klingons: Get to lvl 6, or finish the Silence the Signal Mission.
  • Memory Alpha is north.
  • There is no ground autofire, they removed it sometime late in beta.
  • There is no space autofire beyond 1 forward and 1 aft weapon, and a million space bar keya cried out in anguish.
  • There are four lights.
  • No you may not have a pony.

Feel free to add more if you want.

My wife is not available to cook, clean and pander to me 24 hours a day. She keeps having these unexpected 8 hour 'wife unavailable' downtimes. She calls this 'sleep', I call it a crash.

What are you doing about THIS Cryptic!! Waaaaaah.

    - If the lack of uber-autofire in space is killing your hand, or the noise is getting on your (or your significant other's) nerves... setting the mousewheel's scroll up to fire all beams, and scroll down to fire all projectiles can help both problems. Zoom can be moved to something like Numpad+/-.

    - Expose/Exploit on the ground... learn it, love it. LEARN IT!!!

    - Remember, if you're finding certain aspects of combat difficult, ask someone for tips... chances are, they know something you haven't figured out yet... likewise, help people asking for tips.

    - Remember the forums are where people vent, argue, suck up and troll... but it's also where good discussion, helpful advice and brainstorming happens... be open minded to all of it - and you'll find the forums less frustrating.

The Neutral Zone (technically the Klingon Neutral Zone) is south.

    - DS9 is in Beta Ursae. Fly halfway down the Sirius Sector, then go west young man.
    - You can buy a runabout in DS9 for 147,000 energy credits. Hope they fixed the weapons stats bug with Runabouts.
    - P'Jem not working? Did you grab the ambassador from the Stateroom in Starbase 1?
    - Sol is in Sirius Sector, aka the one you're in
    - Starbase 1 is in Sol in the Sirius Sector
    - The admiral's office is directly ahead of you when you beamed in.
    - Bridge officer vanished after you commisioned them? Check your Assignments tab. If they aren't there it's a bug, file a report for a GM. The Boff must have taken a wrong turn at an airlock after too much romulan Ale.

Well there's the problem. The server guys are falling asleep, and they can't have any Red Bull to stay awake.

    It's a viscous cycle.

Umm you made a factual statement about this happening to "most MMO's" would you care to cite your research and sources? This is called a Logical Fallacy BTW

call me an eejit (irish for idiot) but I've been trying to complete the "join resource battle" (cant remeber the exact name) that you get from a Commander in Deepspace K7 and he tells you to go to the Kastella sytem (again I think but I cant remember as server is down :))

Anyway been there joined the fight against the borg and beaten the mission many times now but it still says in my objectives "Win resource battle".

How do I win apart from play through it start to end? Come top or is this bug?

Everquest - Game down daily during release, gave everyone a free month
Anarchy Online - Game down daily during release, gave free "compensation packages"
WOW - DB lag made the game playable only if you decided not to loot something
    WOW WOTLK - Stability issues.
    SWG - Server crashes constantly

That's just off the top of my head, and some major titles.

    Pirates of the Burning Sea

Many crashes, downtime and botched patches. Free days given as a result.

I would take the time to reply ... but I seriously don't think you're in the mood to discuss Anything. Still I will point out that when one is trying to show another their errors in critical thinking, it is customary to use a concrete example rather than just state that it is fallacious thinking. Because if you are unable to do so then you may not have a very good basis for your "evaluation".

Sorry, I based it off of personal experience with the following MMOs, and comments from other people on additonal MMOs.
World of Warcraft (Got to love a game that can't handle the launch load to the point they stop restocking the game on the shelves to keep people from creating more accounts)
    Auto Assault
    City of Heroes
    City of Villains

If you're trying to look smart then bad news, a logical fallacy is a failure of deductive reasoning; you are actually claiming a bare assertion fallacy (i.e., claiming something is true simply by stating it).

In either case you're also wrong, I challenge you to name an MMO that didn't have downtime like this. I guess this is your first launch, bear with it.

This is actually a very nice thread. Productive, not destructive.

    My tip:

Hit P while in space and assign the 'balance shields' icon to your hotkey. It works wonders when you're in the thick of things, ultra-fast cooldown as well.

    Good luck!

I usually move the "power" for balance shields to the control panel next to weapons. Six one way, half a dozen another.
Note: if you loot a tribble, be careful where you put it. Those be hungry critters.

May as well put this comment in then since folks always ask on this:

    - To breed tribbles, put them in your inventory with food items. They will eat the food items and replace them with more tribbles.

    - Also, since we've mentioned WoW here earlier, No you cannot "mine for fish". However you can use a [Quantam Mine Launcher] to fish for Aquatic Xindi. Just remember, it's catch and release.

I remember back when vanilla WoW launched, did anyone else enjoy hour long queues, random crashes and those wonderful times where everything but the players just went and de-spawned.

    Good times.

And anyone remember that story about the EVE Online patch that deleted an important system file (boot.ini) causing a large amount of Win XP users to not be able TO BOOT their PCs? All because they told the patch to replace //boot.ini rather than //eve-online/boot.ini.

    Not good times.

All this server crashing? Perfectly normal.
