I'm using Catalyst 10.1 drivers for my ATI 4850 which are, as far as I can tell, the latest ones. but the game keeps telling me that i'm using older drivers and I need to update. what version does the game think I should be using, and where do I get it?
I've tried some different ones. The very best ones are the latest ones that just came out. 10.1
The game is not telling me I am using old drivers. I suggest you uninstall all the presently installed ATI/AMD video drivers / apps and reboot, and then install the new ones fresh. (When I do it, in addition to using "Programs and Features" in Control Panel, I also use Device Manager to uninstall them there. I then do a reboot, clear all temp files after the reboot, and then install the latest ones and again reboot.
I use Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) with the same results. Game runs beautifully and fast on my 4890 1 GB with the 10.1 drivers. I never get messages about having outdated drivers.
and i just updated to the 10.1 drivers, who are a whole 3 days old now, and i again, get the message that my drivers are out of date
note the game never had any graphics problems, just, this warning will not go away..
As long as I keep AA and Dynamic Lighting off, then I have no problems. But turn either of those options on and the game will inevitably crash. This is true if I'm using any of the drivers from 9.1o to 10.1
I've tried 9.1, 9.12 and 10.1. My computer still shuts off after 5 minutes no matter which one because of the overheating GPU issue. Sad. (Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate)
To make matters worse, I logged in and played for 45 minutes last night on my other computer that's 4 years old. The graphics suck, but I was able to play.
I have a 5850 and it has some issues with away missions, crashed a few times on those, no issues at all in space, tried with 9.12 and 10.1 drivers both the same. I will have a play with the graphical settings.
Catalyst 10.1 for 32-bit XP seems to be recognized as "current" fine, it's only 10.1 for 64-bit XP that's being recognized by STO as outdated. and I did do a full uninstall from control panel before installing 10.1 on my 64-bit machine (although on my 32-bit machine I just did an in-place upgrade and it turned out fine).
STO seems to work fine for me, it's just the message about outdated driver's that's annoying.
It seems like theres a conflict between the drivers and the 5*** series ati cards, and not just with this game. ATI have already issued a few hotfix's and major build updates to thei drivers, but theyre still having problems with a lot of games.
I'm using 10.1 on my 4800 and my gaming experience has been very smooth. I keep V sync + dynamic lighting off, cant really tell the diff them on anyway, but I max out the rest with no issues. I do get Some long loading times and the odd disconnection at 18:00 GMT, but I'm putting that down to the server population at that present time.
I've got 2 5870's and I run STO with every setting high/maxed and I have not had a crash yet... I would recommend just going to ati.com and getting your latest drivers...if we can ever log in ever again that is lol

I agree with this... I have also turned off ALL Post processing (and all of its effects that use this effect) as well, and I have maxed out all of my other effects. Because of the Vid cards Over heating I also turned on the FR features under trouble shooting Tab just to make sure that I will not have any issues any more. As of right now I have had 0 crashes with ground game play. The only issue that i have still come across is the Servin system - I get about have way through the load screen and then I crash to the desk top, it then tells me that there was a problem with the uncompressing of the file and it needed to be shut down. As far as I can tell this is not a Vid Card issue.
This problem has been very frustrating for me... But this fix has even fixed my Lag and crashes in Fleet actions was well.
Hope that it helps you as well... I have noticed A slight difference in picture but for the most part it has made the graphics look sharper better in my opinion.
I didn't have any serious problems until I installed the most recent patch of the game, then all of a sudden, my card would flake out. Much of the screen would be filled with black or red artifacts, and even exiting the game and doing a soft reboot would not fix the error-- roughly every other scan line on my display would be shifted half a screen to the left when I was on Vista's desktop. I had been using ATI drivers that hadn't been updated in a while, so I installed the ones from the 26th, and no luck. DX Diag shows no problems with any of my hardware.
Doing a hard reboot fixes it, but it happens every time I try to load STO regularly.
I was able to figure out how to load STO in safe mode from the options menu on the launcher, and that does get the game to work, but changes to those graphics settings don't keep when I load the game regularly, so I have to manually change those settings EVERY TIME I PLAY, which, in addition to this new Queue, makes is it a pain just to get to the point where I can actually play the game. I wish there was some way to alter the graphics settings prior to launching the game, but I can't see any way to do that.

I too have the 5850 and it really has a problem with away missions. The more gun fire and explosions there are the worse it usually gets. My wife's 8800GT has no problems.
I really don't wan't to have to put my old GeForce card in just to play STO.
Please, please fix ATI compatibility issues Cryptic.

Its the dynamic light setting that causes the crash on ground missions with ATI cards, which is why i am saving up for, as well as a 1TB drive to replace my dying 500GB drive.

hm, 10.1 is out now i see, trying that.. somehow i still suspect that this bug wont be leaving
If you have windows XP clicky. (Use the top option)
If not go to ati.com and follow the upper right box to find drivers. (I have the exact same card and just got mine to work.)

and specifically they host the drivers at: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx
mabey cryptic missed the note that when AMD bought ATI, the ATI main website was changed into a subsection of the AMD website?
just the stupid warning about obsolite drivers will not quit it

and now, the just released 10.1,i also get the warning
Quite possibly the least helpful reply ever.
on a old x1950 pro
uh... DUH?
the PROBLEM here is that the client dosnt agree with this, and is STILL warning us that we should update our drivers
Other than that it has been fine for the past week or more...
