Pixelation Issues?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I've been working on STO since Closed Beta, but for some reason I have stumbled upon a major issue that suddenly appeared once Head Start started (this has never happened before). For some reason, the Character Creation page is all fuzzy and makes everything look like it is underwater. Is anyone else having a similar issue? I've attached a pic so you know what I'm talking about. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me (as you can see from the chosen image I am a Lifetime Subscriber, so I really want this to get fixed). Thanks for your help!

I love half resolution :) Kinda of a "omg wth is wrong with my comp" check.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I have fiddled with the resolution in the game and it just makes the planet in the background at the start page sparkle with red spots. I've also checked my video display options on my computer and they are at their highest. I'm going to try and re-download my videocard driver and see if that makes a difference.

Still no joy, I'm afraid. Thanks for the input, though. Any other suggestions?

Looks like half-resolution is enabled. I'm guessing you've checked and double checked that.

the CoX engine can have a UI resolution and a world resolution. It's possible that your world resolution is set really low somehow, perhaps a manual .ini edit. If the server was up, I'd take a look into the advanced settings on STO but it's not, yet. One thing you could try that might recreate your settings is changing the resolution the game is running. Changing between fullscreen and windowed, if in windowed try resizing the game.

Another thing you can try is either deleting or moving the file Gameprefs.Pref from your <where STO is>\Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata directory. If you open it up in notepad you can look for GfxSettings.ScreenHeight and GfxSettings.ScreenWidth for your resolution. Interestingly, above those two entries is GfxSettings.RenderScaleX and GfxSettings.RenderScaleY. My config file says "0" for both, they may be set differently in yours.

I hope this helps somewhat, let us know how it goes :D

Still nothing, I'm afraid. I even uninstalled the game, re-downloaded the game, and re-installed it. Hopefully they're fixing the issue during the "Emergency Maintenance"

Maintenance didn't fix anything. This is really weird. As I mentioned before, I've been playing since Closed Beta and never had this issue before. Why is this happening AFTER Beta ends? Something is seriously backwards here.

The default graphics settings were changed on several occasions - Perhaps the defaults are not good for your system/setup.

And uninstalling/reinstalling the game will not change anything unless you also manually delete the settings folder on your system.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the response. I've deleted my preferences a few times and fiddled with all of the controls on the system. It could be because I am using the medium resolution, but using the medium resolution should have been taken into consideration if it is an option. Part of what we did in Beta was report these sorts of bugs. I realize that default changes were made throughout that time, but I still find it weird that this error didn't occur until now. I am also not having any issues with Champions, which most likely uses a less sophisticated graphics engine.

Has anyone else using medium resolution been having these problems? I've submitted a bug report, but Cryptic is notorious for not actually doing anything about those. If anyone else has been experiencing this, it might help to pool our data and send it their way.

As others have said it looks like your using the HALF RESOLUTION check box. It may have defaulted to that or something. This is separate from your chosen resolution. Its just a check box that drops the game to half. Thats what causes the pixelation.

Nope. That was the first thing I changed. It's not what is causing the issue.

I seem to be having the same problem. I ran the beta without any problems, and stopped playing for a few months. Now I started playing again and am having the same pixilation problems. the in game controls and popups look great, but everything else, (character and ship) is very pixilated. Can anyone help?

Maybe try turning on half resolution. Restart the game.
And then turn off half resolution and restart the game one more time.

Maybe even try setting all settings to maximum and restart. See what things look like and then back down to medium option.
