Credits and Merits and Badges, oh my!

Heyo, didn't play in Beta, but I got my pre-order.

Am a bit overwhelmed by the number of different currencies.

Energy Credits? I had no idea Jean-Luc was actually paying for his tea, Earl Grey, hawt. Seems a bit weird, but I do appreciate the portable vendor that buys all of the junk I pick out of dead Klingon pockets. Which also seems a bit weird.

Federation Merits? I thought that these were called "Credits." But credits are already taken. With energy. *sigh* Okay, guess I can get some merits with my credits and energy.

Exploration badges? "Thanks for poking around in hostile space, here's a huge gun that would have come in handy whilst you were poking around in hostile space. Just a little Thank-You."

Are these all ways of getting rewards for doing different things? If so, you're messing with my Trekkie-Tao.

...not that it's going to keep me from playing obsessively...

    Okay:

Merits - Think of these as your reward for working in the federation. Merits is your 'prestige', your 'honor', your starfleet record, basically.

Exploration badges, no idea they weren't implemented when i was last testing.

Energy Credits. Basically, in a time of war, you dont have as much power to waste from your warp core. Like voyager, you need to put things in and dematerialise them, and it costs energy to get things out. Hence, energy credits.

    Kind of like rations.

I'm not keen on the system either - I mentioned it in Beta that my preference would simply be:

Starfleet Merits (usable as currency for all Federation vendors)
Gold-Pressed Latinum (instead of energy credits) for all the other vendors.
And a better crafting system that doesn't use anomalies.

As for those stupid commodities, they need to go (unless there's a better plan in place than visit a cluster planet, get asked for commodities you don't have and not be able to find the planet again to complete the mission).

I can live with it as it is at the moment but damn, it's really clumsy.

    There are commodities, too?!

Oh, man....is there supply and demand for them, or are they just tokens that kind of float around out there until the game code demands their sacrifice? And/or more vendor trash?

    Energy Credits
    Starfleet Merits
(3+?) different 'Exploration' badge types that are non-interchangeable
    12(?) different anomalous data types
Many, many different commodities - some that can only be bought with other commodities

If you're reading this and this is your first MMO, may Roddenberry have mercy on your soul... :)

*Edit* Doh! Missed one :D you get badges of 'bravery' (or something) for PvP...

You can go to a sector made up of anomalies that when you scan will spawn you in a randomly generated mission, and space map. Some of those had you needing to get X shield generators, or power converts etc. If i recall correctly there where four or five different ones.

Any way the whole mission just consisted of you being asked to get them, you not having them, you flying back to the sol space station to buy them, then never being able to find a way back into the mission to give them what they asked for. Last i heard they just took the missions out of the game. As far as i know their is no use for them in game other then that.

Not my first, no. But I was concerned that this was merely going to be MMO with Star Trek skin slapped on it, served stale. I'm liking what I see so far, but there are a few goofy little things like this (three different TYPES of exploration badges?!?!) that are giving me some negative vibes.

Its a cryptic game, they are all rough around the edges in design choices. Something about the people they hire, or maybe it is the same guy doing it, but the ones who make the game in the first place always end up adding a ton of stuff that is always the first thing to go when they leave the team to some one else to keep pumping out content for it.:p

I get the sneaking suspicion that you are a (former?) City of Heroes player.

Well, look at it this way. Earl Grey tea costs 25 energy credits. You, as a Lt. Cmdr probably haves something between 5k and 10k energy credits. Jean-Luc was a Captain that passed several oportunities to become an Admiral.

How many credits do you think he has?

Trust me, that a LOT of Earl Grey.

Well they nerfed the mission maker. It only gives half exp now, so nobody does the giant Aeon farms anymore.
