Just thought I'd let everyone know, I had a great experience with the OB client on my '08 macbook pro bootcamped in to WinXp. I didn't check frames but the lighting looks amazing on high and it NEVER crashed. The reason I didn't try to check frames = I didn't need to! It runs amazing! even after hours of high detail play.
That's right, it only ever lost contact to the server (emergency red alert downtime). I've not seen a desktop crash, or a heat issue (cooling unit helps), or heaven forbid a bsod. The only issue is that my windows partition is only 40Gb and i'm too lazy to boot back into OSX to stretch the capacity. LOL

He could, but a program running on Wine, even if bug free (which they seldom are), is never going to perform anywhere near as fast as that same program running on its native platform. The "Unofficial Mac Version" isn't really so much a way of making a Mac-compatible version of STO as it is a way of making an STO-compatible Mac, and, again, will always be slower than just running it on Windows.
of course its slower... but its still better.
Running a game slower is "better"?
yep... because there is more to it than running a game.
if 1 thing is not quite as good but 10 other things are better.. overall its a net gain.
That's dosen't in the least constitute a reply to the implied query in my post. Exactly what is better about running STO half as fast on an OS that's not designed for it?
for one.. its not nearly half as slow.. its around 85-90ish % the speed, depending on whats going on in game.
two, you put words in my mouth. I never said running slower is better like you asked. I said of course it (running in Wine version) is slower, but it (running in Wine version) is better...
its better because I do not have to boot into Windows and lose my entire computer. I always have like 10+ programs going at once, even while playing... and losing my whole computer just for 1 game is crazy, i'd rarely even play at all.... and end up quitting early on... not to mention the fact I just don't have to run WIndows period, even not counting other programs. WIndows just annoying the heck out of me. I worked in IT long enough supporting all types of things, mainly WIndows... and being forced to use it... I know more about it (including tons of certifications) that most people don't... so I know how to use it very well, but I still hate it. OSX is actually a pleasure to use (once learning it decently). OSX is so much more efficient.. doing the same exact things, the temp is usually 5 to 10º C less than in Windows too... Even with the extra overhead of Wine, STO runs cooler on OSX, which helps with the life of the parts as well.
Realize that this is all subjective, I know there are others that have the exact opposite opinions. Thats whats nice about computers, you have you choice, no one is forcing you (much)
if you are a mac user, and are considering playing this, I can't recommend it enough. It's worth the effort to bootcamp your machine.
Some Windows-native programs run better under Wine on Linux than they do under Windows.
I imagine if you looked hard enough, you could find a simple program here or there that might, but for complex 3d applications which make use of the more advanced features in the Windows OS, there is simply no comparison, at least where Directx applications are concerned. OpenGL might be a different story, but just to give an example, Windows XP runs 3dmark 03 50%-100% faster than Wine (I note that 3dmark06 wasn't even tried even though the test was done in 2007, likely because it wouldn't run properly).
I've used Linux plenty, and that has included use of Wine, which, while impressive for its performance in basic applications, has always been lacking in gaming. I own a rather extensive library of games, almost none of them made within the last 5 years ran under Wine, save a few that had complex workarounds for issues, but then the games never ran properly.
As far as emulation from OSX: Getting into a bare windows installation from your customized appleness is like jumping head first into a cold pool.
Booting in to windows: Ew, but my nvidia settings are rather nice, also DX.
I used to use my mac to play that one warcraft game, and the windows side to play others. I've found that while everything looks just as good on the mac side, the nvidia settings are more fun on windows.
Also, completely unrelated- I'm looking forward to buying a new macbook pro soon (after they upgrade to the i7/i5/i3 series) and I was wondering if anyone has any insight into how well the game works on 1) newer-model macbook pros, and 2) i7/i5/i3 processors.
Thanks.
