Alright, lay those specs on out. Lets get an idea of the typical machines STO players are using around here. While my machines may not qualify as "typical", I'll give it a start:
Core i7 860 (OC'd to 4Ghz at max Turbo mode, HT enabled)
8Gb (4x2Gb) Patriot Viper DDR3 1600mhz 7-7-7-21@1.55v
EVGA P55-SLI motherboard
2x HIS Radeon 5870 1Gb (CrossfireX enabled)
2x Patriot Torqx 128Gb SSD (AHCI mode, no RAID in use so TRIM is supported)
750Gb Seagate ES.2
Corsair TX750 power supply
Antec Twelve Hundred full tower case
HP 2509m 25" 1920x1080 LCD
Saitek Cyborg keyboard
Razer Diamondback mouse
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Signature Edition
Logitech G27 Wheel/pedals/shift set (for Dirt 2)
That's my primary gaming rig. I keep a secondary gaming rig right beside the primary to give myself flexibility in choosing CPU power, memory and PCI-E bandwidth needs:
Having both rigs side by side allows me the flexibility of switching which one is my primary rig and moving the video cards around to match my needs of the specific game I'm playing the most of at that time.
What are you playing STO on?
Edit: Forgot to mention that both above rigs are air cooled. No fancy liquid or refrigerated cooling in any of my rigs.
For what it's worth. The TriSLI is not using the classic setup with all three cards bridged. Two bridged and the third running it's boost through the chip set. Still a nice bump in speed. %-)
Anyways mine sucks, i cant even near max STO. heck l i get 5FPS if i put anti aliasing on, but my rig can play EVERYTHING on at least high settings so im happy, Heres mine.
AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor @ 2.9 GHZ
4Gb (4x2Gb) Corsair DDR2

Corsair VX450W power supply
Acer V233H 23" 1920x1080 LCD
Logitech Media Keybored 600
Laser Cyber Sniper Stinga Gaming Mouse/ 3200DPI
Windows 7 Proffesional 64 BIT OEM Edition

Not to mention that you can also use the 3rd card for dedicated PhysX while the first 2 linked cards are busy rendering. Nice setup!
Edit: Plus extra Kudos for the ram bling! Tracers rox!
I did have a G15 keyboard but spilt a load of drink on it and wrecked it, so I use cheap ones now, lol :P
Very sweet build. Maximum bang for buck for sure. Zero wastefulness, very efficient. I'd consider replacing the 4890 with a 5850 to further cut power use and maximize performance. A pair of 5850's idles at the same power draw of a single 4890.

Yep I need to get a new card, it doesnt seem like 5 minutes ago when I got mine, lol. Couldnt believe the amount they have had out since :P
It was the first PC I built myself, I enjoyed putting it together.
I was never much of a gamer before, until STO came along, Since I purchased the pre-order I then had to shell out for a good enough video card to stop my computer showing its limitations (about 4fps at medium quality) in all STO has cost me $$$$.

Jeez you just made this thread to flex the "Epeen"..lol jk. I bet your room gets super hot with both of those running. Awesome rigs though!
Hehe, my epeen is secure in the knowledge I have the fastest rigs in my neighborhood
Room temps never get out of whack, I have converted my garage into a computer room with dedicated air conditioning. I call it my "man-cave". I am the only male in a household of females, so I have to have my hidey-hole to escape to where manly things like rifles and swords decorate the walls, and computers provide a steady hum for the background noise. Here, testosterone reigns supreme! Until I walk back into the house and hear "can't you remember to put the toilet seat down??"
Indeed you never see someone with just a decent system start 1 of these threads,These threads are always started by someone with a system that they know will gain a re-action.
Anyway just for the OP's pleasure and for the fact you can say "pfft my system kicks your systems TRIBBLE" here are my specs..
dual core@2.66
4GB RAM
Vista 32
GTX 275 card
750 Watt psu.
24" widescreen monitor
Had it for over 2 years now(card and psu are newer) will do me till next year when I will look into building a new 1.
Steelseries Siberia v2 headphones + SteelSeries Gaming Earbuds for when it's to hot to wear headphones
steelseries 7g keyboard
steelseries Qck+ Heavy gaming mouse pad
Everything on high or max 80-100 fps
P.S. can everyone edit there post and add there fps avg. I think the in game command showfps 1 net_graph 1 correct me if I'm wrong

Honestly, as a techy who's built more PCs over the years then I can count, I can say that "Pfft, my system kicks your systems TRIBBLE"!!! Hehehe! J/K!!!
Seriously though, you won't be hurting for horsepower for a very long time to come. The only thing I can see giving you any kind of trouble in the next couple of years is trying to push to much AA in original Crysis, and that's never a ding against a PC, Crysis is just wrong. Crysis Warhead corrected the horrid performance of original Crysis greatly and I bet that runs great with AA on your rig. There's no way in hell STO is going to slow your rig down.

Hehe,
I know mate, actually my system runs Crysis maxed out,it even did with my old 8800gt card.
I can see this system carrying me to the middle of next year and then I will look into building another*.

Maxed out Dx9 or maxed out Dx10? That was the deal breaker for G80/G92 cards in Crysis. Even my GTX295 coughed up a lung trying to keep up in Dx10 mode with AA on top of it in Crysis, Ultra High on everything else. 4x MSAA was the best the GTX295 could handle smoothly at 1920x1080.
The 5870's in Crossfire slaughter the GTX295 in Crysis Dx10 mode though. Above settings are VERY close to 60 fps average, the silver bullet finally for Crysis at it's worst.
I actually got Crysis for free when I bought the 8800gt card for my system,I was surprised to see them package such a system hog of a game with the card but it did run it maxed out...again in DX9.
i'm sure that makes you happy... me, even if i was given your rigs for free, I'd just sell them.. wouldn't even want them :-P
Really??? To each their own, they say. But I've been PC gaming since the Wolf 3D and Doom, both played on a 486 OC'd from 66mhz to 80mhz with 4mb ram and a VLB (VESA Local Bus) 1mb Diamond vid card that was considered amazing for it's time. And that all was considered cutting edge back then. As I said, to each their own.
Since we are talking about years gone by,I do remember posting in another forum about how I started playing video games on the pong system and then the Atari 2600 and also the ZX81.
If someone had came to me when I was on my Atari 2600 and said "we will be playing games with hundreds if not thousands of people all at the same time"
My response would have been " but I only have 2 joysticks".
