NGC 1218 Anomaly: How do I stop my frame rate from tanking?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
My video card does pretty well with STO most of the time, but as soon as I ended up in this zone (during the "Trapped" mission) my frame rate dropped like a stone through a wet paper bag. I tried turning down a bunch of settings under "Performance" and "Effects," but didn't see much improvement. Is there a specific detail or quality setting that would make this area bearable?

this big things that seem to effect FPS drasticly in this game is
    post processing
    Screen ambient occlusion
    Dynamic lighting

turn those three off and you should see an improvement on your fps.

Must be a memory leak or something on this level. I have a 9950 CPU with a 5870 radeon and 8 gig ram. Win7x64 and I play STO with everything turned up the highest.. I got to this mission and it started out smooth but over time it got slower and slower and slower.. I even waited and turned the graphics slider to "speed" and it didn't help a bit... I can't kill the ships fast enough before it goes unplayable..

I can confirm this FPS tanking bug. Did some testing and found possible workaround by setting "Visual fx quality" to Low.

    Submitted Ticket ID # 740,908:
There is a FPS bug in this mission where your FPS will gradually drop to 6, causing the mission to become unplayable.

See player reports in the following threads:
    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=130205
    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2112465
    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=82902

After some testing with graphics settings I can confirm that setting "Visual fx quality" to Low will stop framerate loss. Please keep in mind I normally get 60 FPS with this setting on High. I use a NVIDIA GTX 260.

I've had this issue, as well, going from an average of 40-45 frames per second to a fairly constant 5 frames per second in this anomaly, and nowhere else. The wormhole at DS9 does nothing of the sort, though.

Increase the DPS of your GPU. :-)

I had no problem with this particular map. I do have an issue with framerate drops on away team maps with that tall pale grass, but that's the only time my rig struggles (and it's built to handle virtually anything.)

I will agree with the OP. That map has something weird going on. I have a very good computer, videocard is a GTX295... I have played the game with maxed settings and everything was smooth all the way up to Admiral,... except that map.

About in the middle of the wormhole where it split in 2, FPS was going way down if I was looking behind me (toward the intersection). If I keptlooking away it was fine. From there it was smooth, found the trapped ship, and had to escort it out of the wornhole, and what do you know, exact same thinghappens at the same place. Once past, it was smooth again.

Grenlins are hiding in that wormhole, I tell you! :D

My Radeon 5750 has difficulty with that map (it's playable, but notably sluggish where the rest of the game flows smoothly). It's not a pure horsepower issue, something's not right.

Everybody in this thread (except coderanger) needs to stop listing ONLY their graphics card and RAM in their complaints. Framerate issues in this game are WAY more frequently CPU related. Pentium 4's aren't modern anymore, no matter how recently you've upgraded your graphics card. And unless your screen resolution has exploded in the past few years, CPU will be your bottleneck, because even 4-5 year old graphics cards can push plenty enough pixels to handle your 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 screen resolution just fine, while your CPU is gonna be coughing and wheezing to keep pushing data to your card.

Sorry but I don't believe CPU power is related to this bug. I have an Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.93 GHz in an Alienware ALX. I get 60 FPS on most mission maps, 60 FPS at Starbase 1.

On the anomaly part of this mission, I can watch my FPS plummet slowly from 60 to 5 upon entering the map. I don't even move nor close the BO chatter box. As soon as I enter the FPS starts tanking... takes a good minute for FPS to hit 5.

This does not happen on ANY other map! So no, it's not a CPU issue.

I entered and exited this mission while changing my graphics options to see if anything helped. I also lowered resolution to 1280x800. Like I posted earlier in this thread, the problem is tied to "Visual fx quality". I normally have it on "High" (again I get 60 FPS normally). My FPS does not tank on this map when it's set to "Low".

Please investigate this and fix. Definitely a problem here. Ticket ID 740,908.
