I'm running a ATI Radion HD 4600 card, and STO runs the card to 80 c to 90+ c.
On EVE or WoW it dosent get above 65c-70c. Is it intentional for the game to make this card run that hot?
different software stresses your computer more or less.. 80-90c for modern hardware is not unusual, even in other games.
if you're worried try to find out what your hardware is specced to run at heat-wise and if needed make sure you clean out the pc or buy better cooling etc
if sto is programmed to use 100% of your pc's resources or if its something in the code that doesnt work properly only the devs can answer, but the game runs great, imo, and if you dont crash because of heat you really dont need to worry. if something does indeed overheat it will shut down if its not broken in most cases.
Well right now I constantly crash due to heat on ground missions making it impossible to finish ANY.
What kind of issues can I look forward to from running my fan constanly at 100%?
And why is this not something that the devs are publically addressing on these forums? I preordered to get into the beta and am finding that not only can i not log in to play half the time but when i can I get the blue screen of death forcing me to bang my head against the screen at login.
Right now i am feeling pretty ****ed that i wasted $50 on something i might never be able to play that i cannot get back.
And no, i haven't screwed around with my card and no my fan/inside of my case does not look like something under a teenagers bed.
if your pc crashes, or gets bluescreens etc it usually is a problem on your end.. not the software.
try running prime95, atitool to check for artifacts and/or furmark to check for heat issues, if you dont crash because of this then its probably not a heat issue, but something else.
and your fans running at 100% will not do anything, they are made to run at 100%.
i will check it out but within 5 minutes of playing at default settings my cards already at 90+ C, This is the only game that does this to my system and the error i get when it does go down is related to the vid card ( all drivers updated, etc.) This is the only type of crash i get with this game..
I can only imagine the reason for this is because their is some kind of infinite loop bug going on that effects the graphics processing and not the cpu
I laugh at some of the people telling you the problem is on your end. I tested this open beta on 2 different machines --one with an ATI card and the Other with a Nivida.
They need to fix the issue of what is causing the software to max out the GPU's. This is whats causing the heat issue.
This is a problem with the software graphic's not our hardware. No other game puts this much stress on a GPU with the graphics turned down.
I run WOW with everything MAXED and it doesn't cause this much of a problem. Heck STO starts to max the gpu when your just starting to select your character --- Come ON thats not normal.....

I run Aion at 100% maxed, hence my annoyance.
So is there anything i can do atm to offset this issue?
So is there anything i can do atm to offset this issue?
The only thing I've seen help is to use the command /maxfps then put in what you want like I use 30 and It lowers my gpu usage and fan speed respectively. I.E---- /maxfps 30
Well i jacked up the fan speed with RivaTuner and it dropped it from 80c or 90c to 60c at 100%. problem is this cant be good on the fan on the card. I understand how some games may stress your rig out more than other but to be honest STO's graphics are not THAT mindblowing to be stressing a 3 day old card out like that (Had to replace the Nvidia as its fan died just before Beta). Given the number of posts about this issue thus far it would seem that either
A) there is a problem with the way the game handles graphics cards or Everyone who is complaining about this issue just has a crappy computer.
I dont know about many of the other but mine handles quite a number of games without the heat going above 50 or 60 normally, and this is useing it all day raiding in WoW or sit back in Jita and suicide gank on the outbound gate in EVE.
my gx2 runs all the time hot
curent tep gpu1 80c
gpu2 at 74c.
try blowinf dust out of the heat sinks help to if you have not thought of that be for
my card has ran at this temp from when it was brand new
I'm inclined to recommend looking into an alternate cooling system of some kind for your case. You're right, it shouldn't be doing that, and it's probably not on your end (though that is the first reasonable guess). But, if I had to guess simply cooling the system probably isn't enough. The heat is a symptom of a problem, fixing the symptom could still leave you with an overstressed card.

the fans are specced to run a certain amount of hours on full speed, which should be counted into the warranty of your card, i'd guess anyway
the card itself can also take a lot of heat before starting to go bad, if you're worried or unsure you can always try to contact whoever made your card and ask about it.

wow with everything maxed out is almost able to run on an iphone
try the mechwarrior mod for crysis and tell me it's not as gpu-intensive as sto
i got no problem with heat on my overclocked gtx295, i suggest you get some proper cooling

From the sounds of your post. You've never done a 25 man raid. Cuase with everyone AOEing and healing the intense battles --Everyones fps drop some - depending on your video card. People that have lower end cards usually DC at that point. And no its not a network issue.
From the number of post about this issue --IT IS SAD that someone from Atari has not addressed this issue.
To the Flamers that wanna say its your system. This game is not that amazing when it comes to graphics..Get a life and stop trolling forums looking to flame someone who's trying to help solve a problem and go work on a helpless desk where the people blame your equipment before the really fix the problem (I.E the companies issue).:D
no i did 60 man raids
and it has nothing to do with gpu performance (i did them with 16xS -> supersampling+MSAA), the more mobs/players in the screen the more cpuintensive wow is.
wow doesn*t even use all instructions the gpu is capable to -> so parts of the gpu are idle ALWAYS.
try furmark for example
this will heat up your gpu even more than crysis or sto since it's designed to use as much of the gpu as possible

Molten Core
if it's only 40 player limit - so what? i'm no wow fanboy kid
fact is -> if you have overheating hardware, you either have inappropriate cooling or defect hardware (remember the first gtx280 and the 105° bug)

just for info i am running an Nvidia 9400GT on a really crappy system (20 fps in TF2) and my card is fine, doesnt heat up at all really and thats after 6 hours of play

Nice job comparing a 5 year old game to a brand new one.
Star Trek Online:
Min: 79C
Max: 105C (!!!)
Ave: 98C.
As you can clearly see, Star Trek Online runs far, far hotter than Crysis Warhead - a much more technically demanding game. I have managed to bring the heat levels down to an 85C average in STO by turning most of the settings down, but this is still unacceptable.
I'm simply amazed at the number of heat related problems on these forums. So much so that I think I should say something.
Just because you built a system doesn't mean that it works properly. If you're having overheating issues then you need to immediately re-evaluate your cooling solution. If that means you need to add more fans or a different kind of case then so be it. Your cooling problems are not Cryptics problems. If you're going to game you need to know what you're doing.
I"m not trying to say that nobody knows what they're doing. There are a lot of people who I've seen here who are very educated and experienced and I would not begrudge them that. For those who are complaining about shut downs and reboots and heating problems, you need to learn how to setup a cooling solution that includes a properly designed case for high cooling efficiency and the proper fans and controllers. If your rig is just THAT badass, then maybe liquid cooling is the way to go.
If there's one thing I can't stand, it's people who want to point fingers and blame others when the blame obviously rests on their shoulders. It would be like someone designing a car and then going to the gas station and getting ****y with them because they think their gas is what's responsible for the problems. Because, of COURSE as we all know, it couldn't possibly be THEIR fault in any way, amirite?

Look, you clearly want the game to survive, and A LOT of people are having heating issues. You know what? WHO CARES who's issue it is. In the end, it translates to all those people LEAVING and the game slowly dying as it gains a rep for KILLING GRAPHIC CARDS.
I do not care WHO is to blame, Cryptic has to answer for it. It's FAR too common.
Do people have enough fans on the cases, this is why i love PC cases with a fan fitting on the side of the case directly where the Card and CPU will be, you cant beat a fan pumping cool air right onto both...and if you have one on top and back of the case extracting air then you got a nice little wind tunnel effect that will keep everything nice and cool.
Graphic card for many years now have had cooling that was adequate and did the job but could start to show the strain when you hit it with something like STO...

I'll give the Vsync a spin, hopefully it will cool the GPU down just a bit, hope Cryptic fix it soon, although i wouldn't put my hopes up too high xD
Nice job comparing a 5 year old game to a brand new one.
I logged heat levels on my GPU while playing three games for a couple of hours each at maximum settings, no AA, 1920x1080 resolution (Radeon 4890):
Batman: Arkham Asylum:
Min: 72C
