Or I should have said "sort of" (edit below)
Downloaded and played STO Friday evening. Went and played CoH with my regular group Friday night, then went back and played STO way way way too late into the morning. No real problems, the typical beta stuff. But then when I logged on Saturday morning I had a soundloop type crash. Oh well, beta. I then went to CoH and had a sound loop crash. Other games....crash. I even had crashes when not in games. All requiring restart to clear up. I also encountered overall system instability and some slowness and for the last 30 hours have scanned my computer for anything and everything imaginable. Virus, mal/ad/spyware multiple applications. Used programs to analyze my system, hardware, temperature you name it. Updated drivers. CCleaned, PC wizard....kitchen sink all the tricks my computer savvy friends could throw at me. Nothing. Sound loop crash on any game after a minute or two.
Finally I called the person who built the rig for me. (yeah yeah why didn't I do that to begin with) They suggested that maybe something changed my settings on my video card and said to set it to let the 3D application decide my settings. One simple click......wahlah. Problem solved. It was set pegged all the way to quality no matter the application. Now I don't know if it was changed some how in STO, I honestly don't remember how it was set before, or if I'd ever even messed with that console on my vid card. But it fixed the problem. I've since played all the games I'd attempted since the problem and they are all fine, including STO...it was a little stuttery, but I think that may be more due to me downloading the latest nvidia driver based on what I've read here. (see edit)
Anyway if you are experiencing any instability maybe check your vid card console and see how its set. That one little click could have saved me 30 hours of scanning and research. I'm not saying this problem is the same as what some people are having, but here is what worked in my situation. Hope this helps.
EDIT- well it seems after playing STO now the problem has returned. CoH and other games worked fine after I made the change, now they crash too. Will look more into it then post.
Not so sure if I ever really found a fix or not. Now it seems instead of crashing immediately (1 to 2 minutes )when starting a game (Coh, etc) I'm crashing 20-30 minutes into it. Screen freezes and sound loops.
I'm not sure if its a hardware issue....STO issue....combo issue or what. I don't know if I initially fixed it, then STO brought it back or I just partially fixed it and whether or not I logged into STO doesn't really matter. Will look more into it. Or any suggestions would be appreciated.

letting the game in question control its own video is always a good idea.
as for suggestions try turning on vsync in the game, this will limit your frame rate to your monitor refresh rate. it seems to have helped others as the main problem appears to be related to frame rate being forced too high by the game. you also might set the vsync option in your nvidea control program as well just to make sure the game and GPU are in agreement.
as for other games like CoH you should review their video settings, since you altered the GPU settings the game settings may not be correct any longer causing the problems with them.

Yeah I did see the discussions in other threads on Vsync.
I set Vsync on the card, same crash.
CoH was set at the same framerate as my vidcard, etc., same crash.
Thanks for the replies and anymore suggestions are welcome.

It doesn't seem to be, but I can't rule that out.
