Has anyone found a solution to the NVIDIA GeForce driver issue for laptops?
I've seen all the suggestions to roll back to 190.62 for 9800 GTS cards but that driver doesn't work for mobility cards.
I've tried several drivers including most of the 195 series... 195.62, 195.81 etc but still having major fps issues. The game will play along just fine around 59 fps and inexplicably (both land and space) then drop to under 10. Making the game close to unplayable.
The machine I play on is a Gateway P7811fx. Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26 GHz, 4.00 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS.
Of all the options I've tried, 195.81 at 1280x1024 (5:4) seems to be about the best... but again, still not much to write home about.
Just for posterities sake - wanted to confirm that nvidia mobility driver 195.81 seems to be the best option. I had neglected to shut down AVG on my earlier test so wasn't getting an accurate test result.
Maintaining 59 fps consistently now with a selective startup and AVG and all other non-Microsoft startups disabled.
Well, I was going to suggest just using 186.81, which I use... I'm surprised that 195.81 is working for you. We have very similar systems - Mine's a P7085u, with the same processor, memory size, the 1 GB 9800m GTS... I wonder what any actual differences are.
When I install 195.81, STO alternates between ~60FPS and slideshow.

Also, what is AVG?
