Step one get a monitor i used hardware systems monitor under the trial version . Run sto in windowed mode with it running an watch the temp when you hit space its the heaviest load an thus the highest temp . If you are hitting around 90+ degrees you have a problem ! Shut sto down befor you crash or fry the gpu .
second step is to determine where the problem is (computer knowledge is very helpfull here) . Open the case an look at the vid card , see if there are any burth spots or parts not seated ( no reason to physicaly touch it) or if it seems covered in dust even if minor amounts . If it all looks like it should an minimal dust on it you can try an blowing it out but i would first check the power supply an make sure its right for your card . If its too small it can cause it to overheat an ive literaly had one catch fire befor cause of it .
next thing is if you know what you are doing is to take the vid card out an inspect it further . Look inside the fans an heatsinks , are they clear if not make sure to blow them out good . Alot of the times (mine included) you can blow them out with a can of air without removing them an still not get all the dust out causing it to cake up internaly in the heatsinks an the fan bases . if you see this then that is probably the issue .
once cleaned out reinstall it an fire it up making sure the fan kicks on ( mine did not at first so i had to restart it a second time to get it going again) , once you are sure its going then fire up monitor again an check the temp my idle droped from 70 to 46 degrees , then fire up sto in windowed mode again an go into space an watch the monitor . if this was your trouble then the temp should drop to a normal playable level (for me it went from 125+ with minimal graphics to 75-76 tops under heavy combat load in space with full graphics running) .
I know this will not help everyone but im sure im not the only person here in 18 pages of the post that had this same issue an i seriously hope it helps you all .
