As of yesterdays patch a lot of people are having problems with ati cards. I looked at the known issues thread and all that was there was about AA.
The problem is the game will freeze and black screen. Then it will reset the graphics up to 3 times before crashing and requiring a computer reboot.
I have done everything I can think of on my end to fix the problem: Updated drivers, lowest in game settings, lighting off, etc, If others are having the same problem then please post here and maybe we can get this issue added to the known bug problems.
Am having that very problem, I think the ultimate solution is replace the grahics card with something more compatiable. But anything you can do is greatly appreciated!:)
Unfortunately cerb, your post is a bit vague. You make it sound like all ATI cards are having issues, when that's not the case. I'm currently using an ATI Radeon 5850 with the 9.12 hotfix drivers and have had no graphic issues whatsoever aside from not being able to enable AA. Could you post what GPU, drivers, and OS version you're on? It would help the devs narrow down the cause of any problems.
Edit: Also, it's not just an ATI thing. People using Nvidia cards are also reporting the "black screen" issue.
fwiw, I use an ATI 4670, and have had no problems at all. I've had the client crash a couple of times but I'm pretty sure it's not graphics related. If anything, I wish I had *more* games that ran this smoothly on an ATI card.
The avatar/ground combat character animation are sluggish, but my impression is that's, well, by design.

Sure thing:
os is win xp
9.12 drivers as well
amd 4000+ processor
Any help is appreciated.
Also: the error is the graphics accelerator has stop responding to the drivers. Or something to that effect.
Awful graphics for me with ati card. have a radeon 4600 HD 1GB card and most recent drivers and get 'jumpy' 'blocky' graphics, bits of screen vanishing etc. game is unplayable at the moment. Vista and 4GB RAM.
just started playing the beta and my graphics seem like they could be a little better. right now im running with a ATI Radeon HD3650 and the game says thats not meeting specfications, cant find a driverdownload that works. can anyone help me?
HHmm iv have had those problems (yet) but only 20mins ago the game crashed in the middle of battle (enemy encounter) its not the first time its crashed mind but it the first time Win7 pop up saying ati driver had crashed
and wanting to send for a solution (or what ever it does lol).
my specs are.....
Win7 64...
ati 5870 cat 9.12
8gb ddr3 xms3 (1333mhz)
X-FI Gamer fatality
Asus M4A T-E M/B
P.S wot this about and ati hotfix? or is it in the 9.12 cat...?
this is a driver issue ... not a game issue and yeas most ati cards have this problem ... having 4 friends here that play STO and only the pcs with ati cards crash the hole time wile playing STO (most at away missions)
Found my problem. Pulled off the side panel and looked at the card... Fans are always facing the bottem and hard to see..... But low and behold No Fan!
Grabbed a case fan and stuck it under the card and game works again. Seems the fan decided to die on me. But mystery solved.
windows 7 RC1
cata 9.12
radeon 5870 w scythe setsugen (knocks around 20 C off the load temp), running stock with STO (I tested both OC and stock with vantage...)
Intel I7 - 920 running at 3.6 (pretty sure this isnt the issue, I've done 4 GHz stable, and 3.6 stable in prime...)
I may wipe the driver and reinstall the newest hotfix and see if it works....
all i get is during starbase 24 or w/e (and only that mission it seems) I freeze, then CTD eventually with a message saying display driver has stopped responding, and has been restarted, and then STO saying its crashed.
I am having the exact same problem as artyadd. I can see all the menus fine but anything rendered in 3D is "'jumpy' 'blocky' graphics, bits of screen vanishing etc". I downloaded and installed the latest driver and the problem still exists.
I am running
Vista home premium SP2
AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core 2.40 GHz
8 GB ram
ATI Radeon HD 4600 Driver Version 8.712.0.0

Please file an ingame bug ticket. You can also post a screenshot here, or a YouTube video if the screenshot really doesn't indicate what the problem looks like.

but when I use windows media player it makes it super low quality like this one I did ages ago for a completely unrelated bug: http://youtube.com/watch?v=4km2XbaQ5iU
I'd say if you get a decent screenshot of the bug or artifact, that is sufficient. Sometimes it's easier to get a video when a bug just flashes for a second or two, or when there is some particular pattern to it that evolves over time.
The link to video you consider really low quality is reasonable for the bug you are demonstrate in it. There are a few cases where we'd need high quality video to get a better idea of the bug. However, in many cases the video, even low quality, will tell us a lot about what you are doing to repro the bug. So that can make it a lot easier to repro the bug.
I don't know much about the movie editing software. I have friends who would probably recommend iMovie, but then you'd need a Mac.
I staggered upon ATI issues when upgrading my GPU sometime before open beta. And still had issues when I found time to login last week.
Basicly after i switch on my system and start up STO it will render black artifacts onscreen getting increasingly worse until the driver resets. After that I usualy was good to go. Happens both on xp / win7.
Even created a manual Cryptic Error dump just before the driver would crash, answer from support after three weeks was to upgrade my GPU drivers (which ironicly had a new version avaible two days before the support answer).
sometimes i can get around that driver reset with doing a hard reset after windows booted up. (95% of the time).
anyone having problems should remember that there are at least two usable advanced options commands. one to limit your framerate (no need to render more than 60 fps) and the dreaded -perframesleep 10.

p.s. New card will arrive on tuesday.
All of my mates that have ATI cards are having the same thing.
Dont know if Cryptic need to sort it, or ATI, but I am not going to buy an Nvidia card just to play this game.
On mine it crashes all the time on ground/away missions.
If you have a look at the forums, its all over the place.
Hope they get it sorted.

Any tips on that? I posted a thread here about the same thing, I have one showing some other bugs with ATI graphics card (5870):
