When I start up STO, almost immediately my system fan spools up to full blast, and stays there the entire time I am playing. Once I shut down STO, it starts spooling down within seconds, at by 30 seconds is at it's usual background.
I imagine this means something in my case is running quite hot. But I've never had this kind of sustained fan speed. Even other graphically intense MMOs like Warhammer or AOC did not display this kind of behaviour.
Is there some kind of memory leak, or runaway processes, that would be causing this behaviour? Could it be some kind of driver issue on my computer? I really don't know.

No it's normal. The Graphics Engine that Cryptic uses puts a pretty heavy load on both the Graphics CPU and the Processing CPU, far more than any other game I have ever encountered (coming from Champions Online).
It's really nothing to worry about, as long as your cooling is adequate. Working as expected.
My Nvidia 260 GTX ramps up to 100C if I don't use an office fan pointed at the case with which I can keep it at 85C for general play. Never have I had this temperature problem with other games that I use - warhammer online, Arma 2, Far Cry 2 and Empire Total War all with high graphic specs.
