I'm playing on both x86 and x64 versions of Windows 7 Pro (got it thru MSDNAA in August...yes it is the RTM release).
I have no problems what so ever running STO, CO or any other games on my computers.
On my x86 machine I got STO installed in program files (from closed beta) so I need to run the game as admin to make it work (blame Microsoft and their UAC for that).
On my x64 machine I got STO installed at the default location for the latest installer (Users/Public/...) and the games runs great without having to start it as admin.
However I have noticed that the patcher sometimes use 100% on all cores, but I think that is related to de-compressing and altering huge 4GB files so I will let that pass.
Other games that I got runnin on the x64 machine are:
Batman: Arkham asylum
Tomb Raider: Underworld
Lineage 2 (GameGuard can be a pain in the *** sometimes)
Colin MacRay: Dirt
Red Alert 1 and 3
and a few others
The game that is presseing my CPU and GPU the most is Batman, STO doesn't even come close.
I play all my games at 1920*1080 with all settings on maximum.
System (main computer):
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Intel Core Quad 2.8 Ghz Q9550
4 GB RAM
Asus ENGTX 275 768 MB RAM
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy value
Crucial PSU 550W
System (laptop Thinkpad T60)
Windows 7 Pro 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz T2400
4 GB RAM
ATI mobility Radeon x1400 128 MB RAM
None of my systems are overclocked.
Now. Instead of just complaining (the wast majority in this forum seems to be experts in that area)....what about posting your computer hardware so that Cryptic can have something to work on if it's realy the case that STO causes the problems for you.
As per a suggestion in another thread, I uninstalled the latest Nvidia GeForce drivers and rolled back to 190.62, To mostly correct stuttering.
However, As this thread mentions, My computer also suffers from STO turning off my computer.
However, After monitoring the situation, it IS NOT, I REPEAT, NOT a shut down...It APPEARS to be an unrecoverable graphics driver crash, OR its turning off certain PCI-E graphics cards. Tested this theory with an alternate PCI-E GeForce card (Gigabyte 9800GTX+ 1GB) and the pseudo-shutdown still occurs.
Again, However, It appears to occur randomly. Sometimes it happens immediately after the launcher, At the logos/loading screen, Sometimes it will occur 15 minutes into playing, Sometimes an hour into gaming.
My specs are as follows:
Asus M4A78T-E motherboard
6GB Corsair DDR3 RAM
XFX GTX 275 Graphics Card
AMD Phenom II X550 CPU
Already turned of anti-aliasing. I have done everything I can think of to fix this issue and nothing is working. Why don't we have any word from the dev's on this? They can fix this issue or squash this rumor like a bug. I want to play very badly. It seems a good game from how much I have played. If the situation is not resolved before release date I am canceling my reserve in which I have already paid for the game in full.
This seems to be a big problem. Video cards are crashing and some are even burning out. When you hire low level programmers, I guess that's what happens. I'm asking cryptic to make this right. If we send you guys our burnt out video cards, are you going to replace them?
My card overheated and I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
Is that not enough?
It didn't burn out, but got way to hot and shutdown. i can only play the game for at most 10 min. Even the login screen overheats it if the serever is busy to long.
Maybe you guys should talk to CCP and find out how they do it?
Set back the release date guys. I want this game to be great.
Don't ruin the franchise like Scott Bakula did.
I seem to have the same problem as you guys. My computer has not blown up yet or turned off during play but I noticed that my video card fan starts to spin up to 100% pretty much as the game starts. It only slows down during loading screens but once I'm back up in space or down on the ground it starts to spin back up to full speed. No other game does this on my PC.
Again. Now even with compatibility mode it wont start and in safe mode. Now I get white screen with some vertical lines. I have to manualy restart computer after this. To all those that think that this is the hardware issue its not. Its software issue and its solely STO issue. So dont bother with all those bios, psu, drivers ******** threads. Cryptic ****ed up something in the latest patch and thats it. There is to many different computers that have this exact problem after the latest patch.
1) Yes I got the problem too. I got it mainly at Starbase 24 ground mission. I have never had that problem before in any other MMO I am playing (and that's many, I can tell you).
2) Whining around doesn't solve the issue. The devs will need information to do anything. Therefore I'ld like to urge you all to post your system specs, to make it easier for them to track down the error.
3) From my experience with AoC, where there was a definitive problem with ATI cards, and where funcom did not only not react to the problem, but never adressed it at all, I see parallels here. Well, if cryptic doesn't react and don't do anything, many players (as myself) will be lost forever. With AoC and Funcom, the ATI-performance problem was known in beta and was still there in final version. Cryptic ist not funcom though and the problem here ist different, so maybe we shall give them the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, the problem is urgent, and if you search for -- "Starbase 24 crash" -- you will find TONS of postings here!! Therefore I would urge cryptic very much to get to the heels of the problem and solve it!
4) Having said so, I will add my sys-specs here, blanking out security relevant or uninteresting info:

I just updated to the newest available version of the ATI-drivers (12.9), sadly to no avail. The crash still occurs.
I also have used GPUz to monitor my GPU and the temps ... no prob here. Temp dangles around 80°, which should be fine.
As I don't experience any problems in other Games (X3, WoW, LotRO, DDO, and many more), I won't take a problem with my system for granted. And as has been said before: if so many people worldwide are experiencing the same problem, the common factor is STO.
Please react to our pleas and say something - or even better: SOLVE this, before the Software goes live.
Thanks for reading this.

PS: EDIT: would have liked to add my DXDiag Dump here, but can't find a way ... is there any dev-adress to send it to?
If this is being caused by the STO software then it is very unlikely they will publicly acknowledge it. I mean, if you released a piece of software that fried peoples graphics cards, would you own up and say so and open your company up to litigation?
Whatever is doing this, I hope the Devs are looking hard at what is going on and if it is something in the software, are working their butts off to fix it before release.
As others have said, if you are having problems, then post as much as detail as you can. I think we all want this game to succeed.
I must say, I really am disappointed by the quality of this release candidate. Especially when I remember, how many years they have been developing and when I compare this to other MMOs ...
But of course, this doesn't change anything. The only thing issues like this change is the number of subscribers. And the will most definitely go down proportionally to the number of bugs and showstoppers. So I guess, cryptic does have a vital interest to solve this!
I experience a similar issue here but only randomly. In some space encounters, my screen goes green, sounds distort and stretch out and nothing but outright shutting down the computer is an option.
Heres my DXDiag/Specs for the pile. Well at least the stuff I think is relevant I can't actually post the entire contents of my DXDiag due to character limits.

I too have been having this problem for the last few days, i have h/w monitors running on a separate screen and although my gfx card is running hotter than normal its not enough to shut the system down, sometimes the game shuts my pc off after 30 seconds.
im running an intel e8600 running at 3.8, 4 gb of 1066 ram ATI 4870 and vista home premium 32 on service pack 2.
something i have noticed is that even just idling in space, my gpu is at 100 % activity all the time

Idle in space doesn't mean that your graphics card work any less to draw all the things that you can see.
All that have problems with crashes.
After a crash go to your controll pannel then find "Administrative Tools" then open the "Event viewer".
There you can in most cases find out what caused the crash unless it's BIOS that shuts down the computer to prevent overheating.
Sometimes your computer can turn it self off/reboot if there are conflicts between software or between software <-> hardware (blue screen error without showing the blue screen).

Yes, I just did that. It is listed as system shutdown due to graphics card over heating. The weird thing was, I was running Speedfan last time, and the card never went past 46-47 degrees.

I have an ATI Radeon 4850HD.
Same thing here, speedfan never gave a reading above normal.

Agreed, as soon as this is fixed I'll be back on it :-) this bug aside, can't deny the game looks awesome!
And no, I suppose you're right, but if enough people document the phenomenon under similar circumstances, if it came down to a legal issue, I don't think they'd have a leg to stand on.
But I stress that this is the LAST thing I want it to come to. I'm peeved about a dead graphics card to be sure, but these things DO happen, I'll still be playing the game if they fix this issue.
Not that I'd say no if they offered me a new graphics card lol...they'd get some good press out of it if they were to acknowledge, fix and reimburse the fairly small number of people who have suffered actual hardware losses.
I experience a similar issue here but only randomly. In some space encounters, my screen goes green, sounds distort and stretch out and nothing but outright shutting down the computer is an option.
A graphics card shutdown due to overheating can cause stuff like this, artifacting of all sorts not to mention weird colour issues, and the sound distortion comes from the system's sudden lockup- sounds just like what happened to me. That's another person for the tally lol.

Doing a search on Google for "CoreTemp" and or "RealTemp" will get you two very useful tools that show you the temperature of your CPU (all cores) and their threshold (Referred to as TJMax). RealTemp also shows your GPU temperatures.
I would strongly recommend running either of those while running the game to get a better analysis of the temperatures of your system. They're a bit more accurate than most software.
That being said, as a side note....the quad cores (Especially the Q8200) from Intel are notorious for not showing correct temperatures. The sensors don't always report accurately.
Already turned of anti-aliasing. I have done everything I can think of to fix this issue and nothing is working. Why don't we have any word from the dev's on this? I feel your pain sorry bud. From 23 pages of the same type of problem it looks like a compatibility issue with video cards and drivers. The devs are probably looking at this but not saying anything yet unless they got concrete stuff to say or a 100% fix. Just hang in there cause I too am wonder a few things. The new problem I got is why the heck is my card is heating up to like 69c on ground missions and staying cool at 59c in everything else i.e. space station, space battles and sector space etc.
There's another thread just like this one elsewhere. I posted there that my game crashed 4 times last niight. IT was shortly after I logged in when i was exploring a system. Risa or something like that. It happened in several different sectors. I had no problem up until last night and have about 20 hrs in the game. Be nice if a Dev would acknowledge this problem b4 our systems ger fried.
I checked event viewer and couldn't find any graphics card issues.
Agreed, as soon as this is fixed I'll be back on it :-) this bug aside, can't deny the game looks awesome!

Happening to me too.. Very weird, never had a game shut my computer off. As with others here it didn't happen before the update, so something is screwy.
This game is pushing some very new video features that other games haven't really used to full extent before it seems. Also, it seems that the game relies more on your video card for rendering graphics then other games as well. This can lead to a video card being pushing to the max without relief from your actual computer. While I can't pin point what it is, it is a strong gut feeling.
Most people when getting a gaming computer just gets a everyday machine off of the shelf and buys a video card on the side. This issue with this that technicians should be warning you about is this:
Retail and everyday power supply have very terrible efficiency. Meaning that a standard 600 watt power supply may only have a efficiency of 60% or so: so meaning you're wasting 40% or more. Also these
"PSU"s are very prone to burning out when over worked. This happens often at the tech shops I worked at, someone installs a video card and when they finally get a game that pushes their system the PSU dies.
Also it is not just your power supply, heat is the number one cause of hardware failure now days. Installing a high end video card heats up your entire system like a oven and strains your video card over time. In addition to this, many people don't clean their systems so the fan cooling that most people have get worse from dust. Eventually from playing one high end game after another your video card will die usually after 1-2 years from heating.
There are ways to improve cooling in your system:
1) Adding an extra fan on the case. Do NOT get the little cards that blow air to your video card, it actually can screaw up air circulation of your case.
2) Make sure you have exhaust fans, air needs to come in as well as come out.
3) Room temperature. You may not notice it's hot, but your computer will. This is mainly important in the summer where people are playing games at 80-85 degrees room tempt.
4) Keep your system clean. Use a vacuum and blow the dust out of your system every few months or so.
5) Get a temperature checking program like speedfan, nvidia tuner etc to check the heat of your video card as well as your hard drives. Max out your fans.
6) This is unprofessional advice here and do so as a last resort: Getting a large room fan and open your case. Place room fan next to your case. This will keep it cool, but dust will cover your computer parts in no time. And when I mean fan - I mean a normal box fan.... not a swamp cooler (people these days).
7) Also as a last resort. Underclock. Yes people, I said it! Underclock your video card. If your card can't handle going max without straining your system or near overheating then you may want to downgrade the speed to something more manageable until you get better cooling.
--
Also to these talking about World of Warcraft as a comparison - you may want to see side by side comparisons of the minimum specs for running the game compared to Star Trek Online. This includes Aion. I can run WoW on my p3 800 mhz computer with 258 ram and a craptisic 8 year old video card.
STO is a new game with, while mostly unnoticeable by most, new graphical features does seem to push your gaming system pretty hard. This is concerning because that means this game isn't accessible for a lot of people.
I would suggest Cryptic to find a way to push more of the load on the CPU since it seems to be causing heating issues with video cards. *However it is to be noted: that the latest drivers could be causing this issue*

Whatever is doing this, I hope the Devs are looking hard at what is going on and if it is something in the software, are working their butts off to fix it before release.
As others have said, if you are having problems, then post as much as detail as you can. I think we all want this game to succeed.
... which is in a few days.
Heres my DXDiag/Specs for the pile. Well at least the stuff I think is relevant I can't actually post the entire contents of my DXDiag due to character limits.

im running an intel e8600 running at 3.8, 4 gb of 1066 ram ATI 4870 and vista home premium 32 on service pack 2.
something i have noticed is that even just idling in space, my gpu is at 100 % activity all the time
Idle in space doesn't mean that your graphics card work any less to draw all the things that you can see.
A graphics card shutdown due to overheating can cause stuff like this, artifacting of all sorts not to mention weird colour issues, and the sound distortion comes from the system's sudden lockup- sounds just like what happened to me. That's another person for the tally lol.
Strange.
Does ATI / ASUS have any official tool to measure the temperature on their cards?
Maybe Speedfan don't get all the values of it.
I checked event viewer and couldn't find any graphics card issues.
Agree. I don't want to lose my Pc.

I couldn't believe it. I have the Readon ATI 4800. Actually 2 of them linked.
I fixed it by cleaning off the dust that was on the heat sink.
The computer shuts down at 100c. Now after cleaning the inside it runs at 60c while the game is playing.
If it does get hot again I will be investing in a bigger Heat sink. But it seems fine now.
Check my post earlier post out. I posted the 1st day the Open Beta started.
I don't think this would be the case, all software for measuring hardware temperatures will query the same chip when reading temps...
