Will the devs fix the error message to be more useful? Something along the lines of "You must log into your account at Star Trek Online and enter a product key"
and where do we get said keys? I thought this was an open beta.
It's open, not public. You still require a key. There are several sites giving them out, but most (if not all) of the instant and free giveaways are over for now.
Some, like fileplanet (I'd imagine) still have keys, but you have to be a paying member, if I understand correctly.
If you have downloaded thru steam, right click on the game in your game menu and then on account management. This will give you the beta key and take you right to the account activation screen.
I am having this same issue, I have a beta key and I thought it was connected to my account.

I'm having the same login issue, the game is NOT listed in the "My Account" page. My issue is that when I put in my product key it says it's already been activated. I activated my pre-ordered beta key and then downloaded the client, I'm hoping that this is a server error. I've sent in messages to technical support.
