Hey. I've just spent all night downloading the 7ish gigabyte file and the client has decided that I need a 10gb patch. I assume the install went wrong somewhere? Any fixes going?
This happens in one of two situations, either you are downloading from Steam and started the download before Valve fixed it to correctly set some needed reg keys (to fix this just restart Steam and STO, it will fix itself), or you tried to use one of the zip installers more than once, which doesn't work.
Not using steam and I simply hit setup.exe, ran through the install which only said it required 7mb of hard drive space, despite the whole download folder containing 7+gb of data. Not sure if this is helpful to anything, but meh. :P

Same. I downloaded the installer from Fileplanet. I have the 0108a installer, and I only used it once, and the first time I tried to patch it started dowloading Champions Online... and that patcher will take like 5 days to dl Champions Online.
I see now, sorry Dev! Installed once and reinstalled because it went into a directory I didn't want it to, but the setup.exe only allows for one install. Since I used the bittorrent download, it's not going to let me install again. Downloading 10gb patch then ftw!
Welcome to the club.
I have been downloading this game for 4 freakin days straight and when it finally freakin finishes there are two folders. I install the first one. Lalala. Oh wait that one has 3 mb of data in it. Uninstall. Reinstall. Now I'm downloading a 7.6gb patch.
Please Cryptic, do something. I have been wanting to play this game and all I have so far managed to see is the launcher!
At the slow speed its going at and the fact if the internet drops it starts again I won't be playing ever.
Yeah, coderanger tried to explain above. I didn't click on at first.
Once you run setup.exe, it MOVES files when it installes, instead of COPIES them. That means that once you've installed it once, a reinstall or another install somewhere else won't work because the files aren't there. Therefore, the launcher will notice the missing files and download them as a huge 10GB patch... which does work once it's done... it's pretty fast too, if you don't have the original zip file to re-extract all the files.

Is there in fact a workaround for this as some have said? I spent 24 hours downloading the 8+ gigabyte client from Atomic Gamer over DSL, then got the "zip file is invalid or corrupt" error message. Arrrgh! Running 7-Zip on the file let me do the install, I got past the log-in screen to the "game news" window, then noticed that a 10gb patch was running. Huh? A 10gb patch on an 8gb program that was just created? I expect that sort of thing when buying a retail box that has been sitting on a store shelf, but not from a current on-line download. At any rate, the patch seems to be running a lot faster than the download (3.5% after half an hour instead of 0.7% after an hour and a half), so maybe it will be done before I get an another solution. BTW, I wonder how big the patch will be when my retail version arrives from Amazon.com next month.
Had the exact same problem, win7 64bits, i reinstalled the game but that didn't help. I deinstalled the game, used regedit to clear my registry of any mentioning of "cryptic" and "star trek", rebooted, reinstalled the game and my patch was back to the normal 277 mb. I have to mention to be carefull when using regedit, you could be messing up your system if you're not sure what you are doing
Well here is my experience and I am all up and running now. Windows 7 64, ATI 4870
1) Downloaded RAR version 6.5Gb.
2) Unrared to folder and ran set up.
3) The first time I tried to install it self selected its path as Users\public etc but that install crashed.
4) ReUnRared and reran the set up THIS TIME IT SELF SELECTED Install path as C;\programfiles(x86) and installed fine. When launched it wanted to pull down another 1.7gb.
5) Thinking this wasn't right I uninstall from Add/Remove programs and reinstalled. This time it self selected Users\Public etc as the install path and installed fine.
6)Then it only wanted 173mb of patching and I could run the game.
yeah, new to all this online gaming stuff [blame JJ Abrham ] got a monthly download limit of 10GB and startin get the impression that if i dont want to excede this limit i'm better off not starting this beta up.
say i finish this 6Gb download of beta, can anyone tell me what the "patches" entail, e.g. does that mean i need download even more Gigs in the same month for patches?
Downloaded almost 8Gb from fileplanet - Corrupted
Downloaded almosr 8Gb from Fileplanet after spending $6.95 for the privilidge - corrupted (begining to see a pattern here?)
Downloaded a Star_trek_online_setup.exe and ran it, Hooooray it worked , created folder in diff location and to my horror, ended up looking at a 10Gig patch (since moving to razer keyboards and mice, i have far fewer holes in the wall and broken keyboards these days).........
Stopped the patcher and copied all the Hogg files from the Pigg folder on the corrupted install to the new folder from the doenloaded setup.exe and am left with about 1.1Gb download now.
Not happy really still to be honest but at least i wont be shooting the neighbours cat if it annoys me tonight now!
After the 10GB patch it had me do a 4gb patch, after which it had me do a 2gb patch. 13 times in a row it has "lost connection to server" at precisely 34%. When I restart it the damn thing doesn't recover what had been previously downloaded but instead starts from scratch.
does anybody have the or know of a third party site or maybe even a p2p site that i can get this stupid patch from becuase this is rediculous. I've played two other MMO's (WoW and SWG) and never had this problem. well did with wow but they atleast added a p2p downloader.

Wow, necro-tastic. An updated torrent for Season 1 will be posted shortly.
