sto blew up my computers

Now i am forced to write this from my 5 year old laptop....

so i was all happy to wait for the beta servers to open at 1pm EST, i logged in and started creating my character....bright green flash of light and my power supply blew... No big deal im thinking, prolly just some dust short circuited it or something... So i go to work, and then come home and go to bed, thinking ill just play on my g/f's computer on my day off... So it is now my day off, started up the client, patched, then went into character creation.... SAME SECTION during changing my body proportions, POP her power supply blows...
Now i'm ****ed, so i take out her power supply to look at it and it's perfectly clean and pretty new... It seems like something is overloading the voltage on BOTH computers during character creation and causing the power supplies to blow up... I have ordered 2 new power supplies and and waiting for them to come in the mail, but i am now afraid to play this game.

both computers are on different outlets
one has windows 7, the other windows XP
one has a dual core, the other a quad core
one has a 8800GTX, the other 9600GTX
two different power supplies
two different motherboards
one has 4gb of ram, the other has 3gb
i checked both cases, and there is no dust in either of them because i take really good care of them
wtf?

How much power (wattage) was your power supply able to handle? Did you add anything new to the PC recently, like a video card? It could just be that your power supply wasn't powerful enough to handle the load from your machine.

This strikes me as rather suspicious, and I would strongly advise that you investigate your home's electrical system. While STO is a rather intense game and made your system kick into overdrive, I would speculate that something else (not STO) external would have caused not one but two power supplies to blow.

While the symptom happened to be the same game, I would speculate that any super-intensive app could have triggered the chain reaction that caused you to lose your power supply.

the loud POP! coming from my power supplies gave it away. I also took out the power supplies and examined them both after they blew.

i can run anything on both computers, so i know they are not to blame.

i have never had any issues with any electrical problems in this apt the entire time we have moved here.

i was just playing half life2 and aion the other day also, so i know my systems can handle STO.

Your wall power is faulty, check your fuses. Graphics cards and mobos are hardwired on the absolute amount of power they can demand/give. If your GPU was pulling enough power to blow your power supply the inside of your computer would be a smoldering ruin.

My PSU blew not that long ago. Turned out the unit was only just about powerfull enough to run the PC and the ventilation to the unit was crappy. So at points where my PC had to do a fair a bit of work, BOOM! It went at a point in a game that i've been to plenty of times with no trouble before. I ended up getting a nice powerfull supply and have had no problems at all and i've also got one side off my machine because i'm now incredibly paranoid about overheating.

Just FYI my machine isn't that different to one of yours:

    Quad core 4ghz - 9800GT 1gb - 4gb RAM - winXP

PS. having the side off my machine dropped the temp to my GPU, CPU and PSU dramatically

yes but just because they play other older games fine doesn't mean it is sufficient wattage, the older games will not fully utilise GPU and CPU power as much as a brand new game will. I am not certain if those are enough wattage with the setup you have, but to be on the safe side you will probably want to get higher ones to replace. Also buy a surge protector in case you have an electrical problem at home in general.

they are both on surge protecters... BTW AION is not an older game lol

i actually had the side off of my computer when it blew, the second one has plenty of air flow and all the fans are clean :(

Are you serious? The dev's thought it would be funny to cause this issue on people's computers. Since you are the only person in the world who is having this issue, and since there is no other possiblity of what is causing this issue, the devs consipred against you.

I have other things to say, but I will jsut shut my mouth before I et banned.

well ... the US version anyway <evil grin> but seriously its one of the weirdest facts people spend hundreds on graphic cards, mother boards etc and yet often go for the cheapest option when it comes to psu. yet a bad psu failure can break everything else in the case ....

Dude, it isn't possible! If your electrical systems are on the fritz that will be the problem. If your computer overloaded try cleaning out your fans and see how dusty they are. The more pressure the more cooling and as a result, it can cause it to overheat or crash. It is highly unlikley a piece of software would damage a pc esp with your specs or unless there is extential demand on it from another source, alternatively faulty equip.

i am actually about to call resident services to come instept my outlets, ill keep you posted on the results

It's not always the wattage that makes a psu capable or not. You should make sure you buy a psu from a reputable manufacturer, like Seasonic or Antec. I'm running something like a Seasonic 650Watt supporting a Q6600@3.3GHz, a Gf260GT, 4GB Ram, and multiple HDs with no problem. A good source of reliable PSU reviews would be Hardocp.com

Doesn't mean you don't have bad power coming in. A transformer or the local substation could be bad.

What brand surge protectors? Many surge protectors aren't worth the copper in their wiring. I have worked IT repair and seen electrically damaged computers that were on multi-hundred dollar surge protectors.

Simple fact is that according to the specs there is no way a GPU could blow a PSU. They should have browned out and shutdown. So if it was a load issue either your PSU's are TRIBBLE brand or have been pushed past their specs and damaged.
