I would make a guess that you need to update your video drivers. Usually a d3d error is due to old or corrupt display drivers. It is at least a start.
I have been having the same problem with the fatal error: direct3D driver returned error code (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL) while locking a texture (2D texture size 64x64(D3DFMT_DXT5), 587.02MB memory available). All of my drivers for my ati radeon 9800pro are up to date. Any other advise on how to fix?

your graphic card is way below the miniimum for the game
Star Trek Online Minimum System Requirements
-OS: Windows® XP SP2 / Windows Vista® / Windows® 7 (32 or 64 bit)
-CPU: Intel® Core2 Duo 1.8 GHz, AMD Athlon X2 3800+
-Memory: 1 GB Ram
-Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950/ ATI Radeon X1800/ Intel HD Graphics
-Sound: DirectX® 9.0c Compatible Soundcard
-DirectX® 9.0c or Higher
-Hard Drive: 10 GB Free Disk Space
-Disc Drive: 6X DVD-ROM
-Network: Broadband Internet Connection is Required
Think because i meet the rest of the requirements and am running win7 ultimate im able to play the game at all, with the ATI 9800? If that does not matter how are other people getting the same error, and they are meeting the system requreiments for videocards? Mybe because the Radeon ATI 9800 connects as PCI express is the only reason im able to run the game. If anyone chooses to use a card like me, keep your settings the way the game suggests, or even lower the bar a noch useing the normal settings option. I can play with no lag and still looks good. The error causes my pc to freeze at the start of mission or right after loading. (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL)
Playing with a card that does not meet specs is like having a ten foot river bank on a river that has flood stage of 15 feet. All is fine while the season is dry and the river is low but get a fast winter thaw or a heavy rain and you are in trouble.
You will not get much Tech support cause the card is bleow specs.
It may work but then it may not when a new game updated some of the graphic images and the driver and card can no longer handle the specific requirements.
Sorry to reopen an old post but my card does meet the specs and is up to date and I am getting this error code as well all of a sudden have been through dozens of ideas and ended up searching google and this was one of the areas so I thought why not.
any ideas?
This is the message I get
Fatal Error: Direct3D driver returned error code (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL) while resetting the device (2.13 GB available).
Technical Details: 2.13 GB memory available
now sometimes the number for memory is a bit different but always in the 2GB area once I saw it say 2.78 GB available
I'm almost to the point of reinstalling windows and starting over again with the reformatt that I did this past weekend since I upgraded the computer.
