Massive Intermittent Framerate Loss

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Every 5 minutes or so, no matter the map type (sector, ground, space, character creator in Tailor (not at login)), my graphics will go from a steady framerate of 30+ FPS, to 1-2 FPS, and it will last for anywhere between 1 minute and 5 minutes.

The graphics card memory will go from 30-100 m/fm to 400-1000 m/fm during this time period.

I have a NVidia 8800 GTX card, with a phenom 4 core processor, 3 GB ram. This issue has been happening on a constant basis the entire time I have played (approx 10 hours now).

I have attempted to change my settings in every way, in game and out, and it does not make any difference to the issue. Once it occurs, it's a matter of waiting til it passes.

Also, I have attempted to change my drivers to no avail. It happens with old drivers and new drivers.

Some help with this would be GLORIOUS, as I am severely addicted to the game, and this really makes it barely playable for me :|

One thing I can add as well, when it finally stops doing it, it literally stops doing it, with no "speed up" feel to the graphics or anything. Just one second it will be at 1 FPS, then the next second (when its finally done with it all lol) it'll jump to 30+

Can you display the FPS in game? How?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

Yea you can.. type into the chat "/showfps 1" without quotes

No one has any idea what's up with all this? I keep having the feeling it's something with the server, but I am unsure what i could be. Any other game I play just fine and never have an issue like this.

It's almost as if the server's sending a burst of information through that just sends my vid card into a frenzy or something lol

I get this BURST too, and I have a quad core cpu 2.5x4, 4 gigs ram, and a gtx 250 video card. I'm about to downgrade to 190 driver and see if that helps.

Well folks, after the first day, this issue cleared up some. Still had lower than I should framerates (20-25), but it stopped doing the burst effect that I talked about in the OP

HOWEVER.. Its started up again this evening. Every 5 minutes or so, bam, there goes the framerate, and it could be whether i am standing still, in combat, in the sector map, etc. Does not matter. It's like clockwork. Will last 1-2 minutes, then bam, clears up and get perfectly fine framerates.

This has GOT to be server related. Nothing in any way has been changed on my system since the first day, when I adjusted the driver for the vid card from 195 to 190

Yet this is the first night the server has been HARD pressed with people since the first night. So... what do you guys think? Something serverside causing the funk to go on in my system? or is it still me somehow?

Seriously, is no one else having this issue?

I cannot see HOW this could be my system having problems, especially considering that for 3 days it ran perfectly fine.

    **sigh**

Dude, alot of people are having this problem. Including me - except mine is ground combat only.

I'm using the same processor as you, except my GPU is a Radeon 4890. We have very capable rigs but the frames are completely whacked.

Sometimes mine corrects itself for about a minute, then it goes to ****. I believe this is either a) because of the instability of the beta (which is fine). or b) a problem with our chipsets that isn't interacting with Cryptic's engine. Either way, I'm sure a fix will be released sooner or later. Let's hope sooner, cause I want to play really badly and it makes me sick that people with inferior rigs to mine are having a ton of fun and I built this machine basically for STO and I've been crippled since day 1.

I'm still on Vega colony, it's totally unplayable for me.

has there been a resolution for this problem? was it server related or video card? drivers? i've got a pretty decent rig with all the latest updates to drivers but for some reason this has been happening to me starting a couple patches ago.
