After 2, failed, 17hr long File Planet downloads at anywhere from 300k to 40k/s I finally found out that

DIRECT2DRIVE CONSISTENTLY TRANSFERS AT 500k/s sometimes peaking at 900k/s!

I wish I had known that earlier. I also wish that they could mail me the cool art book that gamestop WAS going to give me for buying a hard copy from them ...but I want to play the game as close to NOW as possible.

FINALLY after 2 days of downloading, failure and forum trolling, my download is going as swiftly as it should be going.

Again: IF YOUR AS ANNOYED AS I WAS WITH TRANSFER RATES, CANCEL YOUR OLD PRE-ORDER AND GO TO DIRECT2DRIVE!
:)

Steam works just as good (if not better.. in fact, it's probably better if you have high end internets) and offers other bonuses.

    Go steam. Down with D2D.

Look, I don't know what kind of bad experience you had with d2d, but ANY reliable place to download this thing is better than friggen' file planet. That was the point of this thread. D2D Just won my heart for having a consistently fast transfer rate. I can actually expect to get this client done in less than 10hrs! Amazing! Thanks D2D!

I hear that, I can't stand file planet.

But yeah, Steam is a superior choice to D2D Imo.

    Also, while offering alternatives,

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/16562/Star+Trek+Online+Open+Beta+Client

is a good way to download the open client without having to pre-order again.

I don't know, my wife bought the game from Steam and I bought it from Best Buy and downloaded it from FilePlanet and we finished downloading in about the same amount of time. Course I might have gotten in before the rush, but my download this morning wasn't too painful, about 5-6 hours.

Fileplanet only gives you he 1.1mb Cryptic Download Utility. Which seems to be a streamlined torrent app.

    Use:
    http://www.utorrent.com/

and get the torrent from the URL:
    http://installers.crypticstudios.com/torrents/Star%20Trek%20ST.0.20100108a.0.torrent

If your not on D2D or Steam. This worked for me, took 10 hours but that is max speed for my DSL connection so it worked perfectly.

Don't forget to seed afterwards, I'll keep my mac on for a couple weeks maybe longer. Share the Love!!

 I FINALLY downloaded the client and when I opened it, it said "file is corrupt or invalid!"

2:42am and I'm back to forum trolling. I would so rather be GALAXY TROLLING!!!

I too fell being ripped off

I paid for the digital download version at Gamestop and they even charged me $4 for download insurance
I presumed that they will be providing me some dowwnload servers of their own but alas

Should have stuck with D2d or steam

Is the fileshack download OK? Anyone tried it? Downloading atm at 450kb/s. However the file seems to be smaller than the others. Is it cos of the zip or what?

No...but I tried downloading from File Planet (pre order from Gamestop here). I had to wait for 3-4 hour download which was no big deal but when I tried to install I kept getting "not responding" when I tried to click on the set up. After waiting a few minutes it responded and I am going through the set up now. Try downloading from HERE

I was getting around 200-300k / s from the torrent last night. Apparently my PC decided to reboot during the night. When I restarted BT this morning, it's down to 100k / s. Hopefully it will be ready when I get home :)

That said, even a slow torrent speed is better than file planet. I've had FP start to DL files using their client then randomly throw me back into a 30 minute queue.

Is anyone having trouble opening the zipped folder that comes from fileshack? When I try to open it I get an error message: The zippped folder is invalid. If I try to extract, it tells me the folder is empty (even though it is almost 7 gigs).

yea i used files shack and after 2 attempts both time it took about 6 hours and said it was completed but when i unzipped it it was only about 1 gb and was just a file folder full of more empty file forders no actual files so i finally gave up and started the STO downloader before i left for work. if its not close to being down by the time i get home i am gonna try this torrent thing that seems to be working for everyone

It's been ages since I've been involved in a game that was just a massive download like STO (beta). Is this common for the download process to be such a pile of you-know-what? I see dozens of threads full of people who have bad downloads after several (hour instensive) attempts. Just wondering how common this is (as I have nothing better to do (like play the game) since I'm attempting another download).

No this is very uncommon. if they had offered one dedicated torrent and then just made it all seed back into each other then we would all download it from one large pool making this all much more streamlined. instead they picked probably the worst file share site (Fileplanet) on the net and made it the official site to download, and fileplanet charges you membership or gives you very slow download speeds.

So, when the open beta is finished, will we have to go through this again when the head-start begins? Will it be a brand new download, or will we likely just have to patch? What did the closed beta people have to do when open beta started?
