OK, very odd one here. I've had this computer for several months and it's powered on almost 24/7. Never had this issue until just now trying to log in to STO........
Logged in, got to character creation screen, was looking at the races/genders and reading about them. After about 5 minutes my computer shut off. Completely powered down. Thought it was a power failure or something but the monitor was still on, LOL.
Booted up, logged in, same thing, after about 5 minutes, computer shuts off while in the character creation screen.
Booted up 3rd time, left computer sit there for 20+ minutes, surfed the forums here looking for something about this, checked email, STO not running, no problem. Did a graceful shutdown and booted up again fresh, launched STO, set the timer on my iPhone and at 6 minutes, 22 seconds it powers off again.
Booted up again, checked everything in the BIOS, logged in to windows, came back here to the forum, looked around some more, gathered all my system specs, typed all this up, no issues, no power down.
My guess is that if I go in the character creation again it'll power off my PC. BTW, I was at different places in the character creation during all 3 shutdowns.
System Specs:
Dell XPS 435 MT i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67 GHz
9 Gig RAM 1066 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD4850 512 Meg
WD6400 hard drive
Win7 Ultimate 64-bit
Tried a fourth and fitfth time and same result. My PC has been on now for past hour + with no issue . Last time I didn't even go in character creation, just stayed at the screen asking if i want to create a new toon and just left it sit there, 5 minutes later my computer shut off.
I'm sure it'll be fixed before launch, that's what beta is all about. I'm just surprised something like this got past alpha and closed beta. I mean, it's kinda like not even being able to get through the gate, much less doing anything once you gain access.
Tried again a few mintues ago, got a different login screen now. After entering password, takes me to same screen as before but says connecting to login server, which I expected since the notice said there was 2 hour maintenance going on. Left it sit there and about 5 minutes later my computer shut off. Looks like this issue is way before character creation if it's killing my computer before it can even connect to the login server.
Hopefully this is enough info for the dev team to go on. I don't plan on posting much more to the thread but if you need any more info, just ask. I'll try to get whatever info you need to help fix this.
So any word on this? Placed an in-game bug report yesterday but it's not updated or resolved. Checked about 20 minutes ago, got about 10 minutes of game play and computer power off again. can't even get past the character creation screen to do any beta testing.
Found this http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=61887 posted today. Will try this tonight I guess. Got the 2nd beta key for my wife's account today so I'll probably try on her PC also to see if it works there or not as she has a different GPU than I have.
Could a senior member please comment on this issue just give a a heads up cant keep crashing my computer just to want to beta lol. Just give us a time line on how long it might be?
Speed through character creation AS FAST AS YOU CAN might have to do it a few time to figure out what you want. After i logged in I was able to play for 15 min going to get something to eat and playing all nigth! I hope lol.
Well I installed the client on my wife's PC last night, which is my old PC from like 3 years ago. Everything in the system is lesser speed, quantity, whatever than in my PC and I left it sit at the character creation screen for nearly an hour and no issues. I'll have to go look at the specs on that machine tonight for comparison. Every other report I've seen that sounds identical or similar to this issue seems to be using similar GPUs. I also noticed that my computer fans get extremely loud right before this power off, and somebody else reported same with the fan on their GPU. Maybe thta's what i'm hearing. Glad to hear we're at least tracking down what might be the issue 3 days later with no support from STO devs. I got an email stating that my in-game ticket had been updated but when I looked last night using the other computer, there was no sign of my original ticket, much less an update to it.
Any chance that a dev is going to aknowledge this issue at some point? It's been 5 days. I can't believe that such a showstopper as this made it past alpha. This GPU chipset is very common.
Maybe a vid card memory problem, or just the video card....
Have you tried this on another comp?
maybe your cpu is overheating? (new thermal paste or heatsink problem)
I would run a hardware monitor tool that logs everything to a readable file then try the game... it might narrow down your problem....
How do you run that exactly? I have my computer crashing(shuting down) the same way. Got past that now It shutsdown after i increased the resolution and the graphics. Now I cant get past the opening credits. I know im going to have to delete and reinstall but it was fine for hours playing then i did that and crashes.
then run the game, make sure that you enable the tool to write a bug report to a text file... then you try the game....
CHeck those settings: CPU fan speed- CPU temp - motherboard chipset temp
- GPU fan speed, - GPU temp
- your powersupply voltage and amps
- your memory chips
Anything above or below the manufacturor specs should be considered as a potential hardware failure... Depending on the results, different tests might be needed (vid benchmark, voltage tests, etc)
I'd like to post here voicing my displeasure with with this entire thing. The Beta period is all but over and I've not been able to do any testing more than 4-5 minutes at a clip. The replies that I've gotten back in game are so long and drawn out that I can barely get through them before my computer shuts down. This is absurd.
The instructions and requests that I've gotten back from the devs include Windows XP and Vista, when I've posted here and in my in-game posts REPEATEDLY that I'm using Windows 7 64-bit. If you'd take the time to READ what has been posted for you maybe you could have gotten somewhere with this. I've seen so many posts here from people with little to no information, and working in IT myself, I know how frustrating that is to try to troubleshoot a problem with nothing to go on. I, along with several others, have posted numerous times with exact specifications, etc, yet you continue to reply back with assinine instructions like uninstalling and re-installing a video driver for XP or Vista.
Come on, I alread posted that I've done that. I've posted that I've tried without the ATI drivers, using only the Windows 7 64-bit video drivers. I've posted that this is W7 64-bit, not Xp, not Vista. What part of any of this are you unclear on?????
My workstation is used all day long for graphics intensive programs, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. This is not a problem with my video card overheating, etc as was posted by somebody else here. This is a problem with STO not working correctly with certain video chipsets. This is something that should have been caught and fixed WAAAAAY before this game made it to open beta, and as I posted in the in-game comment which probably never got to you because my computer shut off while I was trying to update my ticket there, to have this still be an issue a week before you launch your game is rediculous.
I have 2 copies of Collector's Edition on order and was planning on purchasing the lifetime membership on both accounts. It's obvious that customer loyalty like that means nothing to you. Nobody from the dev team will reply to this here, and if they truly understood the issue, they'd know that we can't stay in the game long enough to read and reply to the issues there.
So here it is: If you can't offer us a product that we can access for more than 5 minutes, then you don't need my money either. Both copies of the Collector's Edition are being cancelled and you won't be getting my $500 for 2 lifetime membership subscriptions either. I'll keep playing WOW until SWTOR comes out and try that. My wife and I had such high hopes for this game, but we've been let down.
And to the people that will reply with the usual replies:
1. Yes, I know it's beta, but I have no confidence that they'll fix this issue within the next week when it's not been fixed (or even addressed properly) to this point.
2. No, you can't have my stuff because I wasn't in-game long enough to collect anything other than some rediculous bug-report replies.
Reading this thread and some others, it seems not limited to ATI but some nVidia GT 2xx series cards as well. There are known issues with the nVidia drivers - I wonder if there are problems with the ATI drivers as well. Some others have been able to resolve their problem with a combination of older drivers, tweaking the settings, and increasing fan speed to reduce temps on the GPU. I was able to resolve my problem by disabling the ATI Overdrive feature in the driver. My crashes were also happening at the desktop, not just in game. Good luck and hope to see you on 2/2/10.

soon after my pc shutdown instatly.
reboot, get into tutorial with same character about the same time later same thing happened.
I will not be trying to fix anything on my end. Period. If this isnt resolved before release date I will be cancelling both of my orders.

Can anyone tell me how to get past this?
Seriously though, the post in the 'showstopper/critical' thread is burried under people reporting lag and other non-critical issues. <sigh>
