What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

Client Installed and Patched. Crashes on Cryptic Loading screen. No indication why..

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Problem:

The game is patched and continues to verify with each load perfectly. It shows the Cryptic load screen, goes to about 10% pretty much instantly then freezes/crashes, bringing up the bug submission window.

I do have a recurring error listed in the errors.log file, for all of the files within the Live directory:
MasterControlProgram[1] ESC : The patchclientlib is internally recording error code : 36\nA file was locked that could not be open for writing. - Unable to read back file
I used the command prompt to remove any read-only attributes from any and all of the files and directories within the installation folder. No change.

What it isn’t:

This isn't a decompression error like a lot of people are having. I'm getting no error message, and no indication in any of the logs apart from what I've linked below being the shutdown code.

My PC information:

DxDiag:
My DxDiag (pastebin)

My crash log:
CRASH.log (pastebin)

My error log:
errors.log (pastebin)

What I’ve tried, to get the game working:
[EDIT]
- I was overclocked, so I knocked that off to see if that was having any effect. No change.

- I was using beta NVIDIA drivers. Uninstalled, wiped then reinstalled latest WHQL drivers. No change.

- Shared the installation folder, ran the game on my laptop through the folder. It ran perfectly. So it is something to do with my PC causing the problem, but there's no indication as to whether my PC is at fault, or the game itself.

- Installed the game on my laptop, ran it to make sure it worked. It did. Shared out the installation folder, ran it from my PC, same crash. No change.

- Cleaned the registry using HijackThis and CCleaner. No change.

- Disabled PhysX and Multi-GPU both, at the same time and independently. No change.

- Added the launcher and client to my exception list in my AV/IS (Kaspersky Internet Security 2010). No change.

- Disabled both Kaspersky and Spyware Doctor. No change.

- Redownloaded and reinstalled the client through the torrent download. No change.

- Deleted all the hogg files and allowed the launcher to redownload the files directly from Cryptic. No change.

- Already have UAC disabled, but to be sure, ran the game with Administrator rights ticked, as well as trying OS compatibility as XP and Vista. Disabled desktop composition. No change.

Just providing as much information as possible to be helpful to others having similar/same problem.

Woopsie! Corrected. I tried reinstalling in various different locations. Nothing changes. It just gets to the loading screen, slides to about 10% pretty much instantly, then crashes. Same every time

When I got out of fullscreen mode the game and computer still crashed with no error message. It just freezes and I can't do anything.

Sounds like a corrupted file somewhere, Try forcing a verification of the files.

I get no error, fullscreen or windowed. It just freezes and the error tool pops up without a ticket ID.

Force verified files each time through the launcher, no errors.

Force verified but still froze on start up.... I have had this exact same issue with Champions online if that gives you any ideas why.

Am having the same decompressing error - on both full window and not. At the same place both times on load, verification happens and is ok each time I start the game. Am on Win 7 64, and am not sure what to do next... redownload and try again maybe (and that doesn't make me happy - this one took forever.)

Just a heads-up that we've been discussing this problem in detail in this thread: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=56238

A LOT of us are having this exact problem. Most of us are on 64-bit Win 7, but a few aren't. Anyway, might be better to keep the discussion to that multipage thread rather than creating multiple threads, so if someone gets an answer we all know.

That's the thing though. I'm not getting any error, nothing to do with decompressing. It just freezes then crashes with the submit error window popping up

Rolled my NVIDIA drivers back to the last WHQL drivers, from the beta ones I was using, hoping it would have some sort of effect. None whatsoever. But! Now I have an error ticket ID: 6781182

I'm overclocked. I'm gunna spin that off as well, go back to stock, see if that has any effect. Just trying to rule out anything on my end that could be causing the problem

No effect either. Going to wait for the second download to finish, and install using that..hopefully it's a corrupt installation.

I don't want people getting confused here.

This problem I'm listing isn't the decompression error. The thread for that is here: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=56238

The problem I'm having is blank. No error message or anything at all to indicate from within the logs. It just loads, then crashes/freezes.

    :)

I have the same problem. When the loading screen comes up the game crashes. All the files verified perfect. The game just wont load and sends the error report. Im running a Quad core AMD Phenom II x4 810 2.6Ghz with 8 GB RAM and a Gforce GTS 250 with 1GB RAM. Windows 64bit.

That's me stumped. I'm gunna wait for an official response/fix now. Redownloaded the client via Direct2Drive, reinstalled. Same again....... *cries* Ah well! Patience is a virtue, I don't wanna be a'trollin!

I fixed it! There must be somthing currupt in the default installer files. If you delete the .hogg files from the C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\piggs folder, it will auto update and pull the 10GB files down from the Crypic servers.

After they updated and the game launched, it worked. It went past the loading screen. I can now play the game! Try it your self.

Not much of a fix really when it involves downloading files larger than the offered open beta client ><

Do you have any idea what the problem is from my dump?

I seem to be getting this error each time I run the launcher for all the files within the Live directory:
MasterControlProgram[1] ESC : The patchclientlib is internally recording error code : 36\nA file was locked that could not be open for writing. - Unable to read back file

By the looks of it, I don't get those errors with each launch and try. I also tried forcefully removing the read-only attribute via the command prompt after reading an exact same problem being had with Champions Online, but the only consistent error I get across all the logs for each try is:
    MasterControlProgram[1]: Shutting down: C:\src\Core\CrypticLauncher\StartingScreen.c(618)

With a timestamp and a number beforehand.

    My CRASH.log:

    http://pastebin.com/f4fb37275

    My Shutdown.log:

    http://pastebin.com/d20581f9b

Please, any help?! Really wanting to try the game, and I'm constantly hitting a wall, each time.

Hey man I seem to be having a very similar error only I cant get any error code out of it.

Last couple of tries I have got past the Cryptic splash screen and onto the STO loading page before it dumps me out with the oops and no error.

Keep me posted of how you get on and if i find a fix I will let you know.
