Yes I am. I set the game resolution in Wine to 1024x768 and it tiled 4 screens to fill the entire primary screen while making the other windows corrupted.

Which config file are you referring to?

Anyway, could all this have something to do with not turning off some directory in Wine, like it's mentioned in the video?

You mean xset r off? That has to do with keyboard issues. Don't set the virtual desktop to a resolution goto: your STO dir /live/localdata then make sure PrefEntry GfxSettings.Fullscreen 0 that is how it is set.

Okay here is how I got it working on Ubuntu 10.04

First I installed the wine ppa from

    https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa

    Using the "Software Sources" section

Then I did the following commands

    apt-get install wine winetricks

    winetricks gecko corefonts ie6
    winetricks ie7

Then I cd'd into the directory where star trek was mounted

    cd /media/Star\ Trek/

    Then ran the installer

    wine setup.exe

It seemed to take a while after the dxsetup.exe /silent part but it eventually installed.

I clicked the link on my desktop and was greeted with the login to STO!

After logging in the image was kind of distorted but I was able to click on the "Patch" it patched itself up nicely, and within the hour I was playing. I adjusted the resolution and it went without a hitch.

Gameplay seems fine, I haven't experienced any crashes yet, here's some of my hardware info:
    Quad Core AMD Phenon
    6 Gigs of Ram
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] (rev a1)

Note: I am using the proprietary drivers for my card, and you'll have to also if you're using nvidia

You can get these by issuing the command

    sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

The reason I use POL is because some games hate certain builds of wine. Glad to hear that it is working for you though.

I'm sorry if this has been covered, but I can't seem to find it in this thread or any other..

How do I open the launcher in a program other than IE? I am using a PC with Windows XP, but the owner of the computer would prefer that we use Firefox instead of IE and has uninstalled IE. Do I have to reinstall IE to load the launcher and patch, or can I run it in Firefox or Opera?

I've tried typing the path "C:\Program Files\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online.exe" into the URL window for both Firefox and Opera, but all I get is an option asking me if I want to save the file. in Opera I also get an option to run the file but when I click this is just opens it in IE

If anyone knows the answer to this (as I'm sure some clever person will!) please could you post an idiot-friendly guide on how to do this, as I'm not very technically savvy... thanks in advance.

IE can't be removed from windows as it is integrated into the operating system. As far as needing IE for STO to work, yes. That is why we have to do work arounds to get IE to install in linux. What happens when you just execute the sto exe file?

Personally I wish they'd switch to Qt + WebKit in the launcher. Those work so much better and cleaner with wine.

aunixa's workaround didn't work for me. Maybe because I have an ATI card. I don't know.

Anyway, I got the game to start by adding the 'PrefEntry GfxSettings.Fullscreen 0' to the live/localdata/pref file.

Now to fix the other problems.

    - No sound - no selectable sound output device.
    - Lots and lots of distorted graphics. So far it's been most of the character selection screen, the minimap, loading screens etc.
    - No anti-aliasing - sharp pixelated edges.
    - The game fracks up, if I try to run it in 1920x1080 windowed (that works fine in Windows).

    *sigh*

The sound doesn't work? I guess I should test that, I don't play mmo's with sound so I never bothered to check.

I used this solution from earlier in the thread to get sound ( I never set it to disabled though)

run winecfg, select libraries, add "mmdevapi" and set it to "disabled" (needed for sound!)

I'll try that when I have time.

I updated to 1.2 rc and audio now works fine with the mmdevapi plugin set in the override list.

I had a great deal of trouble with the Online Downloader, but once I ran the client downloader in a Windows VM, I copied the resulting installation files directory over to the linux host so that I could run the install there. Mind you, this was after the winetricks ie6 and ie7 attempts. (ie7 bypasses the annoying javascript error, but also strangely introduces a blank page upon startup in addition to the normal STO login browser screen. Not sure why that is even under a clean/fresh WINEPREFIX dir.)

(Re: Using client downloader, it was crashing at random points initially only a few seconds into the download for the client - regardless of the OS setup in winecfg for that WINEPREFIX installation. After a certain number of crashes, it would simply stall indefinitely. The above mentioned workaround solved the problem and I had absolutely no trouble with patching outside of the minor javascript issue mentioned.)

I also installed PhysX (via winetricks) on the off chance support was included in this version (and there is limited support in wine for it) as my video cards support that. I also added directX 9/10 via winetricks (in addition to the aforementioned ie6 and 7).

    The patching worked.

    System as follows:

Gentoo Linux (64 bit) running a desktop profile with wine as ~amd64
    Currently using wine 1.2_rc2.

    Hardware:
    2 Quad-core Opteron 2378s (8 cpus total)
    16G RAM
2 Nvidia GTX 275s with 896M video ram (connected via SLI interface)
    Soundblaster X-Fi Gamer sound card
    4 1TB drives in a raid 10 config
(various other TRIBBLE nobody would care about including jfs - yes, I'm just that weird)

This configuration seems to work for me for the moment (yes, this is my desktop, no it's not a server), but it pretty much has to be in it's own WINEPREFIX directory. I have other games and didn't want this one with its whacky requirements to do harm to them. :)

Got it to work with aunixas guide - including sound (although there's some "ticks" in the sound).
Now there's only the above things left to fix.

Here's some screendumps of the distorted graphics:
    Loading screen: http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6403/dump1f.jpg
    Minimap: http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/568/dump2.jpg

    Character selection: http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2218/dump5.jpg

Using Ubuntu 10.04 with Wine 1.2rc3 and an ATI HD4850 graphics card.

Try setting it to maximized window mode. Also what vid card are you using? I have never seen any of that or had the sound ticks you mentioned.

I forgot to mention that, but I already run it in maximized window. Fullscreen and windowed does the same thing.

My vid card is an ATI HD4850, 1 gb ram.

Alright guys, I've been reading this tread and trying to get the game running for a long time now.

My problem is, the launcher doesn't give me an Engage button to actually play the game.

the only thing that went wrong is when i tried to install internet explorer 7 i go this error from winetricks

    "Note: command 'wget -O InstMsiA.exe -nd -c --read-timeout=300 --retry-connrefused --header Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate http://download.microsoft.com/download/WindowsInstaller/Install/2.0/W9XMe/EN-US/InstMsiA.exe' returned status 1. Aborting."

in the launcher though, everything displays correctly and the news and release notes window displays all the information, but the patch progress bar is missing (the blue backdrop is still there though) and there is just black where the engage button should be...

I'll love whoever can help me fix this.

It's the same thing here, but you can just click 'Patch' when it says 'Ready' and the game will launch fine.
If there's a patch being installed, you can see the progress in the titlebar and it won't say 'Ready'.

Yeah I have ran into that problem the whole time too, I got used to it, also you can't access tribble because the button wont select.

It doesn't tell me progress in the title bar, and there is no patch button. I left it running for quite some time so if it was patching it must have already finished by now...

All it says is star trek online in the title bar, and as I said before, there is just an empty black space where it should say patching/engage.

Do you get a blank white popup window when the launcher loads? Also can you take a screenshot of your loader screen?

So after two days, I've read through I think all of this thread. And it's been 20 years since I screwed with unix/linux based OS's... so frankly I'm lost.

That would be fine if I wasn't set on getting STO to play on my newly rebuilt Frankenstein PC.

    I'm running Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx (10.04 LTS )

And I'm frankly lost. It sounds like Wiine source needs to be edited and compiled with some hacks/tweeks, but I'm frankly out of my league. Put a Harley of any year in front of my toolbox and I'm good to go with any of it... but computers and programming stopped being my forte sometime around 1994.

Is there someone who knows exactly what to do that wouldn't mind walking me through it either over Vent or g-talk?

After butchering my way through a bit here's where I'm at.

Tried installing from disk running under wine. Worked with hangups till Star Trek Online.lnk, then the installer stalls out. But it's installed Star Trek Online.exe. So I configured Wine to run it in Winxp and launched it using the lastest Wine (1.1.42).

Launcher loads to login page, I try to log in, and it goes to "loading launcher" and then refreshes the log in page.

I have winetricks, but I can't figure out how to use it. What I've found are examples of people accessing it through something listed under plugins, but I don't have a plugins tab on any window in Ubuntu.

I've come to the end of what I can do with the information that I have.

The installer may look like it's stalled around some directx-thing, but just leave it, it will eventually get finished.

I think the winetricks plugin-thing is about installing it in PlayOnLinux. There's a link to a video in here somewhere with a guide.

I gave up trying to get STO to run in Ubuntu. Just too many problems with graphics. I think it's because I have an ATI card though.

Yea there was a "stall" on the DX thing.... but it got over that. But the hang up on Star Trek Online.lnk actually hung up the installer... I could still cancel out of it... but over 20 hours after hitting that file it didn't budge.
