I've never seen that problem on my Sapphire 4870. Normally this is instantly indicative of GPU instability from high temps or a failed overclock, but to have it only affect STO... odd.

yes only effect STO, like i said i can go for months without rebooting my comp so its not the cpu.

i rebooted just to see if it would would and didn't.

play any other game max with no problems

It's like playing an acid trip, you are virtualy blind most of the time. Unplayable. I came looking to see if other ATI users are having it this bad, maybe not?

I'm not getting this with a system more or less identical to the OP's - Core i7 920-D0 @ 3.5GHz, 6GB RAM, Win7/64 Home Premium and a 4870 (albeit with 1GB RAM rather than 512).

Two things come to mind: Ones is the Catalyst version - I'm using 9.12. The other is that I'm running on the stock 750/900 clock.

I get flickering during the initial load screen. I'm using an ASUS 4870 Darknight with 1 GB.

    All graphic options are cranked.

I updated my driver and catalyst control center yesterday, perhaps an older version might work better despite the game warning me to update my drivers?

Just had a thought: How many people getting artifacting are forcing AA through the Catalyst Control Panel?

I made sure everything was application controlled and AA turned off in the control panel.

I also was getting artifacts in game, and the VPU recovered twice during the mission on the Khitomer. I also have been getting the same thing, (bad artifacting until game jams and VPU recovers (sometimes)) in Borderlands. no overclocking and the max temp for the video card CPUID Hardware Monitor tells me is 80 for the CPU and 70 for the video card.

    I have a 4670 1Gb card.

only some of the area's i have been in are bad, some of them i can play in, which leads me to think that there is some badly coded item that is effect some ati cards

Ah Ha! Others! I've been having this same problem with my Radeon HD Mobility 4530, I went so far as to delete the device from my system, then reinstall it using the latest drivers, no effect. If anyone has any ideas I'd be most interested in hearing them, the game is at times playable, but hardly enjoyable.

sounds like ati might need to release a patch to fix some of these issues...

I too am having this problem. Same graphics card, ATI 4870. Problem seemed to get better with Post Processing off, but still unplayable.

    Drivers are 9.12

    Here's a DXDiag of my system http://pastebin.com/m7aac72ab

    Any help would be wonderful.

Also, I'm not "forcing" AA through the Catalyst Control Centre. Settings are:

    AA: App controled
    AAA: Disabled
    AF: App Controled
    Catalyst AI: Disabled
    Mipmap: Performance

I have taken some screen shots if any of the Dev team would like them mailed in.

Two options that did seem to help in certain rooms were Post processing to OFF and Cinematic Focus to OFF; Helped in the Very first room (mess hall?) and the transporter room, but made little to no diference in the Bridge, or the Medical bay on the Khitomer.

I am also having this problem. I have 2 X1950XTs in Xfire and am getting major artifacts anywhere I go. They get better if I look straight up at the ceiling or the floor. I even tried removing one of my cards and going single GPU for a while, and it made no difference. I am running the latest drivers.

    CPU: Dual-Core E8400 @ 3GHz
    Ram: 4 GB
    Graphics: HD 4870 (1GB)
    OS: Vista Ultimate 64bit
    Catalyst: 9.12

Artifact problems here too. The game never crashed though.
I tried using older drivers, but same problems there.

Hope they will fix this soon,

    bye

I've got the same problems with my ATI Radeon HD 4830. I can't see anything and am tired of pretending I'm Geordi in a crazy nebula. The game looks awesome and I'm excited to play. Made it as far as the planet beam down site. If this could be fixed asap I'd appreciate it.

    I have no artifacts.

    Q6600 @ 3GHz
    4GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz (CL6)
ATI Radeon 4870 1GB (default clock settings)
    OCZ Vertex Turbo 120GB SSD
    Windows 7 x64

Champions Online worked MUCH better than STO for me though.

I'm very annoyed that Cryptic are disabling AA for ATI cards. In Champions Online I had full 8 x AA and it was beautiful ! So I see no reason why I can't use AA for STO.

I've tried setting AA to application controlled and also in the Catalyst Control Center but iI don't think it ever works in STO.

the thought just occured to me, and this may be redundant to post, but make sure you all are bugging this thing, that way Cryptic sees it, it might not hurt to post in the "Showstoppers and critical issues" thread in the bug report forum as well. I feel like until the problem at least gets acknowledged we have to be kinda loud about it.

good idea, will definately try it. however, i think we might get a better response if there was a way to do in game tickets...

    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=58653

is where i listed my complete list of wtf's, but no response yet.

My 4870x2 has no such problems...

In fact it runs the game like a star with only an E6600 CPU to feed it.

That said, it also sounds like a jet engine under my desk...

    :(

I have tried turning everything off or to a low setting(when no option) and it does not help at all :(

Are Cryptic disabling AA for all ATI cards?

Yes, AA is disabled for all ATI cards at the moment to prevent some major graphics issues. If you're having artifacting make sure you're not forcing AA in the control center.

Also post the grapics card driver version that you're using. I'm using a 4850 with 0 problems.
