Is it possible to run STO on a notebook?

I'll be the first to admit im not the most PC inclined, but I ran a system test to see if I could run STO and I need more RAM and a new video card on my PC. I know posting this it may be a dumb question even with my limited PC knowledge, but are there any notebook PC's that would run STO that anyone knows of?

Sure there are. I'll be running it on one myself, though it was a rather expensive one.

If you pick a notebook, here are the things you should look out for and make sure to at least match the minimum requirements:

    OS: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 3800+
    Memory: 1GB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 / ATI Radeon X1800 / Intel HD Graphics
    Sound: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Soundcard
    DirectX: Version 9.0c or Higher
    HDD: 10GB Free Disk Space
    Network: Internet Broadband Connection Required
    Disc: 6X DVD-ROM

    Really important out of these:
    CPU, RAM, Video !

Most notebooks nowadays have way more than 10GB of Disk Space available. However, if you buy a notebook, be aware that they are more expensive than a good old computer.

One thing about a laptop/notebook is that a lot of cheaper notebooks DO NOT HAVE DEDICATED VIDEO. Instead they have ONBOARD VIDEO...unfortunately these days a lot of onboard video chips have similar sounding names to dedicated video cards so if you're not in the know you can get a bit confused.

Let me explain the difference for you

onboard video - graphics are provided by a small graphics control chip that's on the motherboard. This chip uses the system's RAM in order to display graphics. Thus it actually leeches RAM from your system and will give you less RAM overall for other tasks. It is also VERY SLOW compared to a graphics card. Typically graphics chips do not have a lot of advanced features (like pixel shaders and other such)

dedicated video - graphics are provided by a separate video card that includes its own RAM for creating video effects. These cards typically have advanced graphical features and are much faster than onboard video cards. Since they provide their own RAM, your system has full access to your normal RAM to use as it pleases.

Dell - When shopping for a new laptop it is always good to price match, so if you look at Dell I also recommend looking at their closest competitor - HP. A lot of people don't like Dell but the nice thing about Dell is that if you're budget minded, you can get a decent machine with dedicated video for less money. It might not be able to max the graphics settings on STO but it will let you play the game

Sager Notebooks - These guys create and sell laptops intended for gaming. Unlike some other companies that offer gaming laptops (Alienware and Voodoo) their prices are quite reasonable. Depending on your budget, they might be worth a look.

Notebook Review - this is a lovely website with an extensive forum system and tons of laptop reviews. You can get information about specific laptop models and also ask for help in their forums in order to get suggestions on which laptops to look for. I've gotten help from and provided help on their forums on many occassions and I find them EXTREMELY HELPFUL

    Above all:

    1. Don't rush into a decision, a laptop is a big purchase...make sure to get it right
    2. If you're unsure if a laptop you're looking at has onboard or dedicated video ASK

Good luck in your hunt for a new machine and I hope you get one working and can enjoy STO!

Mini notebook computers have become quite popular and with good reason. After all, they are convenient and mobile, which is what most people want or need. Mini notebook computers are amazing gadgets and are great for most anyone who wants or needs to do basic computer work wherever they may be. They're used primarily for basic web searches, emailing, spreadsheet work and word processing. The batteries usually don't hold up but for a few hours depending on how use them. There are a few that claim to have 24 hour capability with one charge. In addition, there will be other items you need to carry such as power adapters or accessories and this will add extra weight as well. Mini notebook computers have small hard drives and sometimes come with software already on them which is great, but make sure it still has room for what you need or want for your storage space. What size hard drive do you need? You should know this before you buy
Then there's the processor this determines your speed. The higher the number the faster it will process. Many people prefer Intel Pentium Processors; however, they cost a bit more, but if you need the speed then spend the money.
The next thing you need to consider is Ram which is the memory and is used to run all applications and data. If you are gaming a lot or are doing graphic work then you need to really pay attention to this. The largest battery would be the best choice if staying live longer is important. Keep in mind larger mini notebook computers have lower battery life. If battery life is a really big concern then carry an extra just in case. Price is always important to consider as well as support and service. Check around do your homework and read reviews. Additionally, pay close attention to the warranty you never know when something could go wrong.Mini Notebooks have special added benefits and capabilities that most computer owners and multi computer owners which might be well worth investigating. The mini notebook computer is substantially lighter than the other individuals.

I hope this will solve your purpose.
