So i got a beta key from game stop. tried to DL from file planet and after 3 hours it has completed 300mb. I am trying the STO downloader but its not much better. my comp can handle the DL and I have a good internet connection. at this rate it will literally take all week to DL. what are we supposed to do?

We are still working with additional partner sites to get download mirrors up. Just watch the /download page, we will add them there are they are ready. The torrent downloader should speed up as more people have more blocks available.

Is there any reason why the STO downloader doesn't continue where it left off instead of starting over from scratch again?

As long as you give it the same folder, it does. You will see a "Processing" step as it re-checksums all the downloaded files, and then it will keep chugging along.

Yeah I'm using the STO downloader and it hits around 28% then stops downloading. I'm assuming it's just the amount of people d/ling, so hopefully it'll work better later on tonight, or early morning hours.

After you install, 1.3GB patch left.

** there could be issues with patching after this... i'm not certain, however.

My concern is that when I run in the installer I am uploading more information to Cryptic than I am downloading???!!!! What is going on? The uploads are going to different IP's and the dl is killing my 7mb dsl connection.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that there's no way to pay five bucks or something and get the beta client on CD-ROM. My download is also moving at a glacial pace, and that's even using the torrent option. This is the same beef I've always had with WoW- you spend literally days downloading patches, and by the time that's done, you're so fed up you don't even care about playing the game. I understand that because the beta just opened, there are mobs of people trying to download the client, but shouldn't this have been planned for? They've been hyping this for a while.

I'm going to be pretty unimpressed if I get the full release come 2/2 and still have to spend hours downloading a couple gigs worth of patches for it. I've always had a hard time understanding why it's difficult or impossible to just order the patches on a CD somehow, too. I'd be happy to pay a nominal fee to do that if it meant that I didn't have to tie up my internet connection for days at a time- right now, my torrent client is telling me that this thing is going to take four to six days to download. The game will practically be officially released by then!

    Madness.

ETA: Okay, now it's saying it's going to take two years to finish downloading. Really, guys? This is just a little nuts. I've gotta ask, should I be expecting a few gigs worth of patches when release day rolls around? Because if so, my first reaction is to go ahead and cancel my preorder. I don't want to, given how long I've been looking forward to this, but this is pretty crazy.

Although it hasn't received official blessing, there is the Cryptic Studios torrent that you can try. I imagine it's the same torrent that get's used by Cryptic's installer, but it might work better in your own app. There are currently 600 seeders and 6600 peers, so it shouldn't go too slow.

Post install it appears that there's a 172MB patch.

The torrent is listed on the download page which is why I thought I posted that link here. Doh.

I ended up shelling out the seven bucks to get a "premium" one month membership to FilePlanet, and while it's still not ideal, the download is moving a heck of a lot faster than anything else I've tried, including the torrent. I would like to point out, though, that that seven dollars could have been Cryptic's, had they bothered to offer a way to have a CD-ROM sent out. Heck, I'd have paid ten for that.

I remember literally arguing with Blizzard tech support about why they should just send a CD out rather than expecting me to install something on the order of twenty gigs worth of patches when I bought the game (I was a late starter that ended up being a non-starter). They admitted that they do occasionally send out CDs with the patches, but that "it's not something the customer can request- it has to be recommended by tech support." Fabulous customer service there. I ended up canceling my subscription, it was so frustrating. I understand the need for patching, obviously, but there has to be a more effective way of facilitating these huge downloads. Offering a CD for people willling to pay would reduce some of the burden on the various download mirrors, as well, so everybody wins. I really don't understand why more companies don't do this.

Ah, well, missed that myself. It now has the blessings of Cryptic. Torrent away....

Too bad utorrent doesn't seem to want to seed more than 250kB/s.

The biggest problems I see with that are 1) by the time you got the CD from Cryptic you could have already had the client downloaded, and 2) they'd probably charge for it since it isn't free to ship stuff.

Well this is downloading very fast for me...a steady 156KB/Sec with 2 hours to go to download the 8.17G file. It's worth a shot to see if it can be patched....heck of a lot faster than the 2+ day file planet. And no, I'm not paying 7 bucks to download it a bit faster via fileplanet. I'll let you know if it installs and patches just fine...the one from games.on.net as linked above.

This is an out-of-date build, so it would be unwise to use it. We are getting them an updated copy tomorrow.

If this doesnt open your bit torrent client then you have issue with your browser most likely. Right click and save-as. Then open your torrent app, I suggest uTorrent, and open this link/file. Give it a few secs to find you peers and your golden.

Use a solid torrent app like utorrent, bittornado, etc ... some clients you guys might be using could be very outdated and lacking features.

Torrents take time to achieve max speed.

You may need to manually open ports in your firewall(s) or setup port forwarding as needed. This goes beyond the scope of the support I can give you here.

From my past experience with utorrent and a friend whom just installed it tonite, it went in and the setup wizard checked for open port, etc ...all went well and he is downloading at 150-300k right now, which means he should be done by OB start time.

Limit your upstream to some degree to make sure your not killing your connection and hence your download speed. If you have a 512 up, try setting your upload cap at like 30-40k to be safe, etc...

I have no clue what it is now, but the torrent was showing 300 seeds, and over 10k peers a couple hrs ago ...thats an insane amount of ppls sharing data. If you get stuff setup right, throttle your traffic correctly, and don't have a ISP thats shaping your traffic you'll knock that client out in no time.

I would suggest using the Bit Torrent at the bottom if you know how to setup and use a torrent.
Fileplanet will be slowwww unless you have a paid sub there.
The other launcher is a torrent in disguise :) , might as well use the actual torrent. You should get better speeds.

so when i read this .. i think by myself .. today is a day which i can proudly say .. I love STEAM !! *g

i'm really happy to have a download rate from about 800 kb/s at steam .. so it will be finished in around 2 hours.

Why is it the only download method if you didn't preorder from steam, d2d, or impulse that gives any reasonable rate is the outdated build? i have never seen an official downloader with such ridiculously low speeds, i understand that there is only so much the servers can handle and there probably swamped but considering how long this beta has been promoted you'd think they'd have had more download partners or mirrors prepared ahead of time...

sigh, alright i'm done whining now sorry...just rather disappointed atm i expected a bit more from cryptic
