Where does STO install?

This info is gathered from post that follow, for a quick recap:
This info is for downloading the game, if you have the disc and install from there, please skip to the folder portion of this post. If you purchased the game and were playing the beta, just patch up the beta and play the game. You will need to update your profile with the new retail key under the my account link.

Initially you will need to download and run the Star Trek Downloader.
After the Star Trek Downloader hosted here is complete there will be a setup.exe file that will need to be run for game install. This setup file will then run like any other setup install process.

This will then install the game to a default folder:
Win XP
C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online
Vista/Win 7
\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\

Concern over not installing in Program Files (PF) on Vista/Win 7 machines. Basically if installed in PF the operating system makes it harder to keep the game up to date with all the patches that MMOs will see, due to a feature within Vista/Win 7. For actual post by coderanger see page 2.

Question was asked about how many charactor slots you have, and what happened to beta toons. From Coderanger on page two, "2 to start, you can unlock 1 extra Klingon slot later. You got 2 extra for purchasing the lifetime or 12 month subscriptions (though I think the offer has ended)." As for charactors that you may have had during the beta, they were wiped prior to release, unless you had your head start toons, all previous ones were erased for release.

Thanks to all that helped calm my nerves.

Ok, I probably missed something, but I grabbed the installer from the main page and am using the Star Trek Downloader. After hitting the .exe file, it asked for a temporary folder to download the files to, and I'm currently downloading to a folder I don't wish to have a game at. Was just wondering if after the downloader will I then have to run another file, or the folder that was created called "Star Trek ST.0.20100108a.0" run the game out of that?

Using Win 7, so not sure if that makes a difference. FAQ just says,
"Locate the file downloaded in your download directory, and double-click it.
Complete the installation process to start the Star Trek Online launcher.
When the launcher starts, enter your Username and Password, and click Submit.
Patching should begin automatically. The progress bar displays the percentage of patching completed. When the patching completes, click Play to start Star Trek Online"

So I'm kind of assuming the launcher will actually install the game, but this downloader is huge, almost 8 gigs, expected it a little different I guess.

Thanks

For me, the default folder was C:\Program Files (x86)\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online in Windows 7 64-bit

Ok, it seems that it will be something different then, currenlty it's in a default folder of my downloads/star trek st.0.20100108a.0, so I'm guessing I'll have to pick a destination folder later. Thank you thefrayl

Thanks MattTreck, I'll update my first entry a little bit later once I confirm it too. That way people don't have to scan all the messages to find the answer. Thanks for the input/help.

    \Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\
That should be the default install path for Vista/Win7.

MattTreck should be right, that how it should be anyways. If Dev got a third party installer.

Just to make it perfectly clear: If you use the Star Trek Downloader hosted here, that will ask you where to save temporary installer files. This is just so that the Downloader has a place to drop these files. The downloader supports stopping and restarting so you'll be fine with that. What you download from Fileplanet (and I'd assume D2D and Gamestop) is the same files that the downloader downloads. Once you have the full thing, just run setup, it'll run just like any other installer. Once it's installed there you can delete the download from the Star Trek Downloader.

The default under XP is Program Files\Cryptic Studios, under Vista/7 it is Users\Public\Games. If you previously had it installed to ProgFiles on Vista/7 and re-run the installer without uninstalling, it will default to the old folder (or rather, any time you reinstall over an existing copy it finds your old install path for you). For the torrent downloader tool, it defaults to whereever the downloader executable itself is, which is probably where you have your browser downloads set to go.

Why is Cryptic installing this game in the Users\Public\Games folder on my Win7 system, which doesn't even exist until the installer runs? How is this a proper procedure. If this is an x86 application, it should, as it always has been, installed in the program files directory... in my case \Program Files (x86)...

To maintain my sanity, I force it to install where it should be installed.

The user's folders are for storing user files, not for running applications!

I consider this to be a bug.

AGREE 110% I've had enough of newer programs that follow this 'don't install to program files' bull@##% that MS is trying to push. Programs go in program files, simple as that. END of discussion!

Installing under Program Files will cause you no end of troubles thanks to a feature known as VirtualStore. Basically Vista/7 don't allow programs (normally) to write inside Program Files. This is fine for something fairly static like Word or Firefox, but for something that needs more fluid updating like an MMO this is painful. We try to fix up the folder permissions so this isn't a problem, but it doesn't always work and for reasons that are entirely beyond me it sometimes actually gets reverted. If you would prefer to run from ProgFiles I recommend flagging both the launcher and gameclient programs to run as Administrator, since that will also disable the file system virtualization.

    Madpaddy:

For the install, after you download the game and the setup autostarts or you click it. The setup will ask you where you wish to install the game. At this time you may select a different drive to install it to.

    ethanADAMS:

This is just from what I have in my download folder, which was downloaded on 1-11. The downloader name is:
    Star Trek Downloader ST.0.20100108a.0
After I ran this it downloaded a folder that it extracted/installed to a folder called:
    Star Trek ST.0.20100108a.0
In the above folder there are two additional folders one a directx, other a piggs along with a setup.exe. After running the setup.exe it will ask you where you wish to install the game if you don't wish to install it within the default folders.

I originally installed the game and it went to a file on my desktop (I have vista 32). The problem I have is where the heck did my character slot go from the beta? I installed the game from the disc to the program files where it belongs and it said I had two slots left. The only thing is my character is nowhere to be found on the list of characters you are allowed to create.

I want to know where my beta character went? I had tweeked the appearance and other attributes just the way I wanted them and now I've got nothing.

    *grumble grumble*

All beta characters got wiped, as was advertised for weeks in advance. They impletmented a save option though, so you could save the appearance of yoru character and load it up into live.

So how many character slots should I have? 2 or 3?

2 to start, you can unlock 1 extra Klingon slot later. You got 2 extra for purchasing the lifetime or 12 month subscriptions (though I think the offer has ended).

Thanks for the info. I could have swore the standard release of the game had 3 character slots + either a tribble or targ pet.

Turn off User Account Control and reinstall the game...

EDIT: Start > Control Panel > Users(green link) > Turn off UAC by moving slider bar all the way down(win7) or removing the checkmark (vista) > Restart.

I just got the DVD-ROM and after I started the install, it is now patching - the message said it was going to download 10gb - which is huge and will take a long time (even on high speed DSL)

My concern is in reading what's been posted here. I have VISTA and when the program was installed, it selected the Program Files directory, not the \Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios.

Since the download and install will take all night, I don't want to have to do that all over again.

Should I cancel and start over?

Note - I have the beta STO installed and that is in the \Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\ directory. Nowhere did I read that it had to be uninstalled . In fact, I thought it was good that the DVD-ROM version did select a different location so that the beta version was not over-written.

    What now?

Don't install anything at all. Just run the beta launcher and it will patch the client to reail version.

So I'm using the online "installer" only to get to 2GB of download and I hit the spacebar while at the window and it cancelled the download. Now come to know it cannot restart from the point at which you stopped?

The default if you download the game from Steam is:

By the way, it's a good idea to go into the game's properties in Steam and change "Always keep updated" to "Do not keep updated automatically" (the game's launcher does it for you).

Game folder has just 250Mb. PWE/Arc folder - 86 more. Steam folder does not have the game either. Cannot find combatlog.log no matter where I look (~1 hour of searches).

    WTH really.
