Hey, folks! If you’re the creative sort and have been desperately hoping for a chance to win a beta key, look no further; it’s time for the Star Trek Online comic creation contest! Here’s how it works: Create an original (drawn by you), three-panel comic based in the Star Trek universe. You’ve got quite a few options – maybe you want to recreate your all-time favorite Star Trek scene, maybe you want to see Worf hang out with Kirk, or maybe you want to draw yourself into your favorite series. It’s all up to you.

Submit your comic to contest@crypticstudios.com. We’ll accept entries in either JPG or PNG formats.*The deadline for submissions is May 4, 2009. After that, we’ll put together the 20 best wallpapers and on May 11 we’ll ask the community to vote on their favorite. If your comic strip is selected, we’ll feature it on the official Star Trek Online website and make sure you get access to our beta test when it launches.

We can’t wait to see the community flex its artistic muscle!

I have a question about the contest.
To what extend are we allowed to use the computer to augment our comics?
Are we allowed to create it entirely on the computer,or color it with Photoshop(or a similar program?)

I cannot seem to find rules for this contest... a few questions:

#1. What is the jpeg format requirements, are we making a large 1600 x 1200 wall paper full size comic page, or is it something smaller like we might find in the comics section of the newspaper.

#2. Must it be hand drawn? Can we use 3D software to render images?

#4. Must it be black and white, or can we color the images?

#5. When is it due by?

    Let us start with those?

Don't feel bad, I can't draw either. That is why I use 3D programs. LOL

The comic can be entirely computer generated. "Drawn" in that sense means "created entirely by you."

Feel free to use Photoshop, Illustrator, or any other computer augmentation program, as long as the art is yours.

You don't have to have any real art skill... some of the best comics I've seen, were stick figures :).... now go make something interesting ...

Well I absolutely have no drawing talent whatsoever, so I may have to look into using an illustration program so that I stand some chance in this contest. Either way, I am interested to see the submissions because I know how creative this community can be, so I think that this is a great contest regardless. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

What exactly does 3-panel mean? Like 3 vertical panels with mutitple scenes? Any limits on the number of frames, actual size, amount of text?

It's sort of vague, so I wouldn't want to go overboard only to have it rejected.

Every time I try to be funny I fail epicly. It's only when I'm not trying that I have a chance.

I really want to do this one though... XP

Think something along the lines of a normal Penny Arcade update.

Can we submit more than one submission?

Where do we submit? Are we just posting a link here?

How broad is this? Would a joke that refers to a series, episode, movie or even about Star Trek Online, but doesn't take place "inside the universe" be acceptable?

Wow, this one is going to be a really interesting contest. :D

Though like STO previously asked, is there any JPG limitations regarding the screensize? (After all there can be too large and too small).

    That is a good idea.

But after this E-mail problem they announced a few days ago, it would be reassuring. After all, I bet people wouldn't be too happy to work hard on this for 10 days (be honest it's a bit short for this kind of thing, unless you are a pro), and have it rejected because the attachment. ;)

Just tossing around some old ideas for submission consideration.

    A redo of STO... #1 from 2004.
In the original 2004 version the building belonged to Perpetual Entertainment.

The STO... cartoon series ran from 2004-2006 and is now in book format and available as a free PDF download: Click here

Would chopping up official screenshots be considered OK?

I was formulating ideas that all would involve photoshopping screenshots since I have no actual drawing ability.

    Ok here's the skinny -

Please attach only png or jpg images. The size doesn't matter, but make sure that it's viewable when we open it up for voting. :) My eyes are old.

You should receive a reply confirmation when you email your entry in. If you don't let me know. That's a bug.

Be bold and make the comic your own. I can't draw, but I do a mean stick figure with sassy commentary. :) Be creative. Just remember, you guys are choosing the eventual winner so make sure it's rated PG!

Have fun and good luck to all!

Awen, the bolded sentence REALLY needs a comma between "don't" and "let".
I had to read it twice to find out what you meant. :s
