How can people still skip cutscenes?

I can't do that anymore for quite a while, but in Hive Space, before the final phase, when my cutscene ends, I can barely shoot once at the Queen's Diamond because others have killed the two guardians and almost the diamond. So what's the trick to skip cutscenes?

Press and hold the esc key. a skip icon appears in the top right of screen with a progress bar encircling it.

Some cutscenes cannot be skipped; if you try to, you get an icon that says so.
