It seems inpossible to win the prize (at least, without buyout) according to the release. Here is the quote from the announcement, the bolding of the relevant points is mine:
The entire Galaxy is going to Red Alert! We’re launching a one week version of the Galactic Red Alert, with an additional reward: an Experimental Ship Upgrade Token! From August 17th at 8am PT (17:00 CEST) – August 24th at 10am PT (19:00 CEST), all of our Red Alert events will be returning at once on PC, as the Final Frontier is caught in a massive invasion on all sides. During this event, you’ll be able to play the following content:
Borg Red Alert
Elachi Red Alert
Tholian Red Alert
Tzenkethi Red Alert*
Nakuhl Red Alert
*Please note: As the only Red Alert with a fail condition, the Tzenkethi Red Alert will not grant daily bonus progress if you fail the TFO. The fail condition will likely be removed in future runs of this event.
In addition to their usual rewards, these Task Force Operations will also grant daily bonus progress. You’ll receive one Daily Progress each day for completing one Red Alert – doesn’t matter which one – on any character on your account. After you receive ten daily progress, you’ll be rewarded with a package containing the following, once per account:
An Ultimate Tech Upgrade
A Specialization Point
An Experimental Ship Upgrade Token
You can also purchase this Grand Prize on the events page, if you’d prefer. The price will be prorated as you earn Daily Progress, becoming cheaper the more you play.
If you earn, or purchase, the event’s Grand Prize, you can still complete Red Alerts to earn Bonus Progress. Completing a Red Alert TFO each day will grant a bonus amount of Dilithium Ore, beginning at 8,000 and increasing by 1,000 for each completion thereafter.
Red Alert Task Force Operations are available to Captains of level 50 or higher. Head out and defend the Galaxy, Captains! Go to Red Alert!
So, as I read that, the event runs for 7 days plus 2 hours. 7*24=168, 168+2=170 hours. Since you can actually run events every 20 hours (better than 1 per day), this permits you to theoretically earn 9 daily progress (1 at hour 0, 2nd at hour 21, 3rd at hour 41, 4th at hour 61, 5th at hour 81, 6th at hour 101, 7th at hour 121, 8th at hour 141, 9th at hour 161. The remaining 9 hours is not enough for cooldown. Also, this calculation does not take into account the time needed for each run of the event, which would also need to be subtracted.
Since even in the best case scenario, one can only amass 9 points in the permitted time, and 10 are required to win, either:
1) malevolence in forcing P2W, or
2) incompetence at posting and not proofreading the event announcement
is to blame. Since option 2) seems to be standard operating procedure, I'm willing to grant the benefit of the doubt to incompetence over malevolence. But if that IS the case, someone should fix it ASAP.
And hire a proofreader, for Elements' sake!
Comments
It’s always wrong.. always.. because he doesn’t care. He can’t be bothered to take 1 minute to proof read anything, and this happens every time there is an announcement. It’s honestly just baffling how someone can be that lazy and incompetent and remain in their position.
When information comes from Kael, it’s wrong and you need to figure it out yourself. When he gets around to it, he will probably post a correction.. or not.. it’s just his job.. who really cares right?
If it seems like I am being harsh.. I am. We have asked nicely for years for him to just proof read his announcements, and he simply refuses to do it.
The thing is that his job is basically to be a bumper between the developer and the players. His basic mission is to relay information to us, and filter player-rant in order to in turn relay information to the devs.
Since it's a f2p-game, and Cryptic are making some money for PWE, the correctness of information given is not as strictly monitored as it would be for someone who say... works at a bank and has a clientel of people that earn a few million dollars per year.
Also... nobody knows the actual figure of Kael's payroll, except for Kael and Cryptics accounting-department.
That's great to hear! Thanks!
It has to take longer to go back and fix every single press release then it would to just do it right to begin with.
I'm really not sure if saying that is fair. He does seem to have a bit of passion for the game.
CM as a position can be very different from company to company. Some are required to act more professional while some are not. Rebecca Ford, who became CM for Warframe, was originally just an intern of Digital Extremes for example.
Kael sometimes comes off like his CM-role is a voluntary one IMO. But in any case, we don't have his contract to check.
This is a difficult topic. Lack of proofreading while copypasting is certainly a thing. Personally I'm not bothered, but that's because I'm a "seeing is believing" kind of person, so I take every newspost with a grain of salt first.
The non-posting on the official forums is an entirely different matter they have decided on like 5 years ago, when trendy left after the outcry about a certain golden starship. That's not on Kael specifically.
you're right, I take it back, he may actually care but certainly at times it seems like he doesn't
I appreciate your intent here.
I normally agree, I don't like the fact that I am so bitter against Kael, it's not a position I enjoy and was one I tried hard for years to change, but he simply won't allow it. I am sure he has at least some passion for the game, but he obviously doesn't like his current role with the company. When he first started posting inaccurate press releases many years ago, the community pointed out the errors and were mostly very friendly. He was a new CM, we appreciated the effort, we let him know what needed to be improved and explained that as players we kind of need this information for various reasons. Kael has commented about it in the past, even vowing to do better, but has never actually put even one second of effort into that pledge. These problems have been consistent without even a shred of improvement for years. Not days, weeks, months.. Years.
Believe it or not, I don't want Kael fired. I would never hope for someone to lose their income, to lose their method of survival and caring for their family. Not even in extreme cases, but definitely not over a video game. What I do want to see is Kael moved to a position he's better qualified for and one he actually enjoys enough to put some effort into it. It's clear from his career choice, that he has a passion for this type of work, but it's just as clear that his current role does not suit him.
I mean, we're asking for something very basic here, 1-2 minutes extra per week.. tops, and it's too much to ask. Seriously, how little do you think about your job when even that is too much for you? I don't dislike him as a person, he seems to be a nice guy and I wish him continued happiness and success. I just hope he finds it in a position that doesn't involve being a Community Manager since it's just not the job for him. Deep down, I think he knows and agrees with me, I really don't think he likes his job.. at all. I am judging by his actions, not his words, people pour themselves into things they love, things they have passion for. Obviously, Kael has not found that in his current position and it very much shows.
Which is unfortunate, and may be Cryptic would be internally working on a solution that works for them, us and him somewhat equally in the end.
Do it if you need a ship mastery trait on a captain or you want the T6-X token, skip it if you don't.
This isn't part of the 5-event campaign so skipping it doesn't hurt you at all.
People complain about "nothing to do" in between events, people complain when Cryptic adds filler events to keep those who want them happy. People complain if Cryptic doesn't send hired goons to their house to murder their family pets.
(Complaining about Cryptic staff "roofpreading" skills for news posts is appropriate though. June 31st - Never Forget.)
The news post now says 5 days and a ship token, but who knows?
Complaining about Cryptic staff requiring 2 or 3 updates to finally get their news posts right is also appropriate
