Split-Beam Plasma Pistol- Upgrade Please?

Probably something that has been asked before, BUT:
Is there some reason we can't upgrade the Mk I split-beam plasma pistol that all Romulan recruit characters start out with? There's no other split-beam pistol in the entire game as far as I can find, and you can't craft one (or I can't work out how anyway), so it would be great to have this unique little blaster for your whole career- but who wants to do a measly 77.1 dps at level 65?

Can these not be upgraded either?
OP asked about the plasma pistol.... you should be getting weapon drops throughout the game as you advance. If your toon is lvl.65 you should have access to the crafting store. In fact you should be using MK.XII equipment unless you've leveled it up to MK.XV which I think is the highest allowed in game
