Uneasy Allies - Destination Unknown

So, I'm up to this mission on my new Klingon. We do the bit where we talk to Taris and then are supposed to leave... when we're confronted by a Herald.

I'm puzzled. Is it not possible to fight him? I seem to remember being able to before, but now he's just spamming his giant red AOE attack circles... three of them at once, covering the whole floor of every room. Instant total team wipe. Respawn, he's already casting it again, instant wipe. Respawn... wipe, respawn, wipe, respawn, wipe. I don't remember it being that way... and eventually, he just disappears. Kind of a disappointing ending, like the game is saying it's not worth my trying to play.

Is this working as intended? Is it possible to beat him?

Yes. It's time to leave. Pretty sure its working as intended as have given the Herald a good whack with a variety of characters in the past.

However, this Herald hasn't yet met my KDF recruit so will probably have it again lol

Thing is, he's unavoidable. They make us fight him in a small room where his AOEs cover the entire room... and each one is a oneshot attack. So, you're oneshotted three times over, unavoidably... then again as you're respawning... and again and again until he despawns.

He's not unavoidable.. there is a door behind him.. run through it and back to the Iconian gate. If you can't fight him.. don't. What you're describing is not how the mission goes at all, if you want to run you easily can. Sela even tells you that you shouldn't fight and tells you to run.

The way you're describing the mission is totally inaccurate, here is a video of someone simply escaping the room. Just do that.

For the record, he can be defeated, my KDF Recruit wiped the floor with him using the insanely powerful Nanopulse Mek'leth's. It was pretty fun.. I killed him as Sela was yelling at me about how I can't possibly win.
    Insert witty signature line here.

Why would they design a mission like that? Surely there has to be a way to avoid the unavoidable? It seems like this Herald loves to fight.

You could always fight him, but it was always pointless to do so.

Those circles covered the room the first time I played it. The room isn't too big so it's not really surprising. Working as intended, I'd say.

Sela even tells you not to try fighting him. Just run/dodge roll away avoiding the AoEs. If your BOFFs want to stay and fight, leave them behind. If you are getting insta-wiped, then lower the difficulty or retrain your captain with more points in defensive stats.
