I would not call it looks but aspects as to how well a ship fits to the theme of a character do play into it a bit. But na, for the most part I simply end up adjusting the theme of a character if I need an excuse to put it on a ship with appealing stats. Of course in some cases I compromise a bit but ships like the Tzenkethi Dread, Jugger, Verne, Discoprise, Styx and a few others are just too appealing to not have active in my deck of characters. If a character is set on a ship I never switch back, only eye on more potent releases if they happen.

I have my favourites for each toon, so have to say both reasons. I don't care of other's opinions of ships....I fly what I feel like flying and it can change daily.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
99% of ships in the game aren’t terrible.
I fly the durgath faithfully since it was released and it can be outperformed by most ships. I just like the formidable look and the fact that I can make supper during a battle and know that when I return the shields may be down to 95%.
I don't care how powerful it is or even if it comes with a 1-click-win console. If I don't like it I won't fly it.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I have a specific lead ship for all 14 toons on my account. Most of the reason is wanting CANNON ship for each toon.
Doesnt matter what the ship is or what it can do.
My characters all have a theme, and fly ship(s) that fit the theme.
- My Andorian, Grey, flies an Andorian escort with Andorian phasers, Andorian bridge officers, etc.
- My Terran Empire defector Duquesne flies a Paradox with Terran crew including a reprogrammed holo-Leeta loyalty officer
- My Fed Science captain Seaton flies the Tholian ships with Tholian space set, Tetryon beams, etc.
- My Liberated Borg Romulan flies an adapted Tal Shiar ship with plasma + kinetic cutting beam, Borg assimilation console, etc.
Won't fly a ship I dislike visually, but will fly an underpowered ship if I like the way it looks, or something it does that I find fun in some way even if it's off-meta or whatever, so long as it isn't outright terrible.

I need to thumbs-up this.
I have a T3 raptor I keep around just because it looks so freekin cool with all the borg visuals and plasma sfx
Both; and it depends on the character/theme and the subjective 'fun' I have with it.
I fly stuff like the Durgath and Archon because I like the look/style.. even though I find their performance somewhat underwhelming.
Conversely, I fly stuff like the Nekrid and Kara not because I like their looks(fairly meh about both), but because I like what the ships are capable of.

I'm voting other because its pretty much all of the above.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

Ultimately the decision goes on the character narrative, not looks necessarily. I mean, if the stats are good enough I'll buy the ship for the stats and fit a character to the ship, but it's mainly about the character/ship dynamic.
It's mostly looks, but the ability to turn is a necessary one, I didn't like how slow the D'deridex class was and I opted for something a little faster the moment i leveled up.
I'm not a dps chaser...I can still do decent dps with a decent and fun build. I fly ships I like...I customize each ship just as I customize each character who flies it.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
I say other because I maintain ships and builds that are just fun to fly or fit a theme for that toon, and others that are for when I want to shred things. For me the Keldon and Galaxy class ships are fun to fly and will always be special ships to me for reasons. However I have been getting alot of mileage stat wise out of my Voth Rampart and Borg Juggernaut tanks. So a bit of both. Though generally I care more about how the ship feels to fly than I do about stats. Both have their place but in my book I don't care how good the stats of the ship are, if the thing sucks to fly, generally I won't fly it.

I voted looks, because I just want to roleplay as a captain. I don't care for being an uncontested DPS tyrant, although I do care about not being able to survive confrontations vs AI NPCs. I pick the ships I use because I love how certain ships look. When I purchased the T6 Andromeda Exploration Cruiser, I immediate reskin it to a Galaxy-Class, but I do love the fact that customizing the ship with features from the other skins is immediately available to me.

Exactly as long as it also fits the theme, I'm good, I'm not going to run around flying a Fek'Ihri ship with a non Fek'ihri captain or fly a klingon ship as a human, it doesn't fit the RP aspect.
I use the Chronos Temporal Dreadnought because it somehow just “works” for me. I get the Temporal abilities and the hanger pets as a force multiplier. Adding in a bunch of Universal Consoles and she holds her own in most, if not all, content. I’m not overly undermatched in both TFO’s and Event content. To be able to dish it out and also not die is a plus for me.
For the most part I have themes for my characters that I follow. If that means I am flying a ship that is not (and never will be) meta, I am fine with that. My main KDF is a Gorn that flies a D4x, my Ferasan Science Officer runs an EBC Torpedo Boat, and I picked up a Sarcophagus just for my new DSC KDF Recruit.
That being said, once I choose a theme that I want for the character you best believe I will work to squeeze the best performance out of it that I can. I may have casual builds that I run when I feel like it, but I pour the majority of the resources on those characters into pushing them to their limits on a serious DPS build.
I am a performance oriented player.. but only to a point.
The Vaadwaur Juggernaut is arguably the most powerful ship in the game.. and I don't have one. Why? I can't stand looking at that horrid thing.. it's great, but I hate it.
I tend to look for a balance between something cool looking that can also quickly clear maps. For example, I put my KDF Recruit in the Klothos, despite the fact that I also have the Qugh which is slightly better.. but horrifically ugly.

Oh yes, on new characters I get the trait from the Q-ugh! as quickly as possible so I can dismiss that front-runner for "ugliest ship in STO"
It stinks that they didn't give us some real KDF costume unlock for it, like the Federation pancake ships got. I don't care what skin, anything else would be fine.
I'm very much at the space barbie stage of my STO experience.
My disco Klingon ships are full disco sensor-linked Disruptor builds, my main ship is a fleet Vor'ral that I've customised mainly because it's the Klingon ship with the most space barbie options.
I wan't a D7 just because I love how it looks but can wait till the end of the mega event.
There are better ships for mini-maxing dps but I don't really care about that I get ships for how they look.
Using the Guardian right now. I would describe her as "rugged," and the DPS is not particularly impressive. But I really like the look of the thing a lot.

Mines massively expensive, pretty, nicely balanced for my type of gameplay, and did I say insanely expensive to equip ?

Second, a ship has to look good, with a *strong* preference toward Romulan/Reman designs.
The very last thing I consider, if at all, are the stats. I do take into account BOFF layout, but that is more of a play style thing.

This. OP should have had a 'Both' tutton.

Think thats why the op put the word main in big letters.
I for my part wish that he would not even have given the option other at all to make the poll more pronounced.
