why do I bother?

Am I a complete fool? why have i spent so much real life money on this game with lockboxes, lobi, selling keys and having a lifetime sub when the devs can't be bothered to fix problems like traits resetting and the mailbox icon flashing after reading your mails?

apart from cosmetics but what exactly is the money being used on?

Just don't spend money anymore, it's that simple. They don't care about the player, only money....show how you feel by not giving them any money

Wait, have you really spent thousands of pounds on STO? Whenever I've spent real money it's always been for stuff that is persistent (as opposed to consumables like keys) such as the LTM when it was discounted or expansion packs.

it is frustrating because whilst i like getting new ships and stuff i see the cash im spending as an investment in the game and the team but im not seeing much return

i get properly hooked on gambling, its a bit of an issue, i did the same with the old republic trying to get some hover chair and a flashy lightsaber, i wouldn't mind if they fixed some of the more irritating bugs and did a bit of a quality of life update, its not like they're working on content

i have a bit of an issue when it comes to gambling boxes, i did the same with the old republic trying to get a hover chair and a certain type of lightsaber, i dont generally mind, i enjoy the game its just frustrating to keep coming back to it and seeing absolutely no effort by the dev team to fix bugs that are years old

I think the blinky mailbox has been annoying me for 6+ years now. Stop blinking at me! I read you already!!!! AIIEEEEEE!!!!!

They even managed to add that bug into the console ports when they created them.

I'm glad when more people start to see just how sub-par this MMO is in comparison to others, and finally take a stand to say no more, fix it or forget it.

It's completely unacceptable by any standard to have all vital powers in the game not toggle reliably or in a timely way. The new bug you mention with the traits unslotting is quite terrible also, breaks builds at random, dooms the team, ruins tests, and it's endlessly frustrating.

My brand new carrier gets stuck at red alert, because a support pet decided to pop scattering field, as does my ship, a very old bug that was once fixed and seems to have partially reverted.

Visual effects that obscure your ship on layers of random colors, full screen white flashes that persist, obnoxiously loud sounds totally out of proportion to the powers and other sound effects, stalking dancing elachis, stalking drones, new bugs with every patch, typos on every blog and stat and date, and to reflect this, everything in game becomes more expensive, from legendary bundles with bloat to T6 ship upgrades.

Why do you "bother"? If it bugs you so much, why are you even playing, much less buying keys for gamble boxes?

    Have you considered an intervention?

Games are supposed to be fun. If it's not fun for you, by all means, move on! I've done that frequently in the past. (Still enjoying STO, because minor things like a flashing email light don't annoy me nearly as much as they apparently do you, so here I am and here I'll stay. SWTOR, WoW, and EvE are in the proverbial rearview, though.)

Very well said, this really sums things up quite perfectly.

It's entirely optional and I liken it to an entertainment cost (i.e. going to see a movie) or maybe even investing in a hobby.

Unlike some MMOs I can think of, including one of Cryptic's other MMOs, STO doesn't require P2W to enjoy the game. The amount of mandatory P2W in Neverwinter is unreal. There is no need to pay a dime on this game.

Exactly. I've skipped events entirely when I felt like it, taking a month or two off here and there. "Losing out" on some particular shiny isn't going to ruin my life.

Other times I've done the minimum 5-15 minute daily for an event. Other times I've played for hours at a time.

It's a game not your job, and there's nothing to "win" and no one to win against. Play when it's fun, stay away when it isn't.

I don't agree with anyone saying that this is a terrible MMO. The story episode quality is high, the mechanics are fun (despite the bugs), and dressing up my Kens and Barbies (despite the bugs) and furnishing my flying space Dream Home with pretty beams or cannons of murderous doom hasn't gotten old yet.

I think the OP brings up the most interesting question of any that could be asked around here. Of course I do not have an answer. No matter for how long I have been around. My approach to deal with it is to always try to percept STO as whole:

    - From the Dev who does a beautiful job with the environmental and character art of the game to his colleague who cannot manage to make the game’s basic functions work properly
    - From the Trek licence with countless actors making this game so beautifully unique to the total lack of imagination as far as PvE design is concerned
    - From all my dear in game friends I met over the years to the total rip off money making policy PwE/cryptic confronts us with.

I deeply love and hate STO for all those reasons. My course of action here is to:

    a) always speak with my wallet!

    and

    b) let them know why I’m doing it!!!

Things can only work if one does both and if I end up spending a lot in year 1 and nothing in year 2, if I’m around a lot in year 1 and not much in year 2 and still keep on letting them know why I think I can make my peace with this game best.

This rant thread has gone on long enough. If you are dissatisfied with the game, then I would suggest offering constructive criticisms in the feedback sections or in a better thread than this. Ranting helps no one and doesn't get anything done. Constructive criticisms are taken into account, rants are not. If you are dissatisfied with the game, then I would suggest taking some time off, clear your head of it, then perhaps in the future return, and absolutely don't spend cash if you're dissatisfied. Spending cash while saying you're dissatisfied undermines your argument.

Fixing bugs isn't as simple as flipping switches as much as we wish it was. It takes time to identify a problem, then code a fix. A single one or zero out of place can cause tremendous issues. None of us like it, but it takes time if you want it done right. /closed
