I just got a new laptop for christmas and though I'd try STO on it, since I love it on the PS4. But it is IMPOSSIBLE to play with a mouse. I connected a gamepad, and can get the character to move around as well as move the camera up/down/left/right, but none of the buttons do anything. I went into the options menu and turned off xbox controls and turned on joystick. But under mapping and #1 and #2, there are no options for me to change and map the gamepad to.
There's 3rd party software like Xpadder that can be programmed with a simple GUI (graphical user interface) to emulate keyboard and basic mouse movements. It is possible to combine those with keybind presets to activate various abilities based on rows in which the abilities are slotted, limited by activation from left to right before cycling. More on that can be found through reddit STO and these forums if you search.
PC STO would be very clunky to play without the use of a mouse altogether though as the interface expects either a mouse input or keyboard input.
Different types of mouse-input tracking peripherals exist too if the usual laser mouse doesn't work for you. Not sure what they're called but they can track movement in the air, trackball where the mouse itself remains stationary, and VR systems probably have excellent motion trackers too that I'm sure can double as a simple 2D mouse input too.
Is there anywhere that shows the mapping for a ps4 controller ? The game is impossible to play with a mouse and keyboard. I have a gamepad, but don't know which buttons do exactly what.
I too played on PS4 then switched to PC, at first Struggled to transition back to PC. Until i found a program called DS4Windows by Ryochan7 (forked from Jays2Kings/DS4Windows Updated constantly).
I mainly use Controller for Space now and have only made a few changes in the Key Binds section of Options.
Honestly, if you are going to play with a controller you’re best off sticking with the console version. As said previously, the PC version would be very clunky to play with a Gamepad and probably wouldn’t work no matter how you set it up.
If you’re playing the PC version, it’s a keyboard/mouse game. I am not sure why they have never made the controller UI from consoles available to PC users, but it’s clear that is not something they currently have planned.

Sorry.
