*unlocks door and turns on Open sign in the cafe*

Ladies and gentlemen... Its that time of year again! Q is coming back for another holiday celebration we all know as the Winter Event!

As always, I have opened my cafe for us veterans to share tips on various elements of the event, as well as tricks honed from years of experience. All are welcome to share their words of wisdom for new and returning players alike!

All I ask is that it is kept respectful.

Now this year is actually going to be a lot easier to get credit towards the big prize. According to the Dev Blog today that I shall post on the wall over here...
https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11479533-q's-winter-wonderland!
Fastest Game on Ice is no longer the sole source of credit towards this year's event ship!

That's right folks, we don't have to slide around on the ice if we don't want to!

And now... with complimentary hot chocolate... come on in guys! Share wisdom, hang out, happy holidays, and when the Wonderland opens up I'll see you out in the snow!

we didn't have to last year either - they managed to get the new event system integrated despite them saying months earlier they didn't think they'd have enough time to do so
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

(breaks out old ice skates, thinking back on so many winters gone by, when my legs were more nimble and my knees not so stiff)

I do believe I have never missed a single Winter Event. Game gods willing, I will be there this year, as well. A little greyer and more wrinkledy, maybe not quite so fast out of the gate, but tricky. Us old b-tards are tricky.

Let's start with the same old, same old -

For the PVP race, there are some things make you go faster -

    1) Traits from Terran rep (tier 1, Close Quarters Combatant), and Delta rep (tier 1, Physical Conditioning)
    2) Counter-Command rep armor (+25% runspeed for 3 seconds after performing a roll)
    3) [run] mod on ground weapons
    4) The Command Specialisation, (not Commando), Tier 1, top of the left tree, Forward March
    5) Delta Alliance Elite ground set (two-piece bonus +5% Run Speed)
    **edit**
    6) There's also a trait called "Maquis Guile" that adds 5% runspeed. I bought it on the Exchange for 5 million.
    7) Apparently there's a special project you can slot at your Fleet research Lab that adds some runspeed, but only for a week.

I am now using both #2 and #5 - the armor from Counter-Command with the wep and shield from Delta

The Ice Fishing is probably the quickest way to get event progress, I believe you only have to catch one fish. Also can be done without any purchased winter gear (there is a free white-quality gauntlet you can pick up.)

For those who are in a hurry, this is a good minimum effort approach, yes.

Personally, I really enjoy the QWW event. The newer things like the Krampiri and the Ice Fishing don't thrill me, but I really love the rest of the events. And the PVP race is my absolute favorite. The Summer Event is also fun, yes. But the Winter Event is the highpoint of my STO year. I love it.

Actually I make a new one every year. I'm also hoping to expand it to discussions on winter items too.

Thanks for the complimentary hot coco! =D ♥ The winter event has always been my favourite of all the events.
I love it.

Fully agreed. I've always loved the overall vibe of the holiday season, and the Winter Event really brings it home.

Same here, and what's weird for me personally is that I moved to South America six years ago, and here in the Southern Cone the seasons are backwards; December is the middle of Summer.

As far as Rattler's wish to discuss QWW gear - as a devotee of the Demon Goddess EPG, I will attest that Very Cold In Space III is a murderously effective addition to Gravity Well III. It greatly increases the damage done. The thing is, if you're parsing damage with CLR, it's found under Pets, and thus easily overlooked.

I'm actually thinking of getting that ice armor module for my cryomancer Sci. Would fit with all the other cryo modules she's got. Also... she is basically the Star Trek version of Sailor Mercury on the ground, and she needs her ice. :D

    Also @darkbladejk
requesting sticky for event duration please?

2018-2020 no new events were added, but 2020 saw a second run of the event. let's not be overdramatic. :/

I did that for awhile, fun tip, I added Frictionless Particle Grenade to make it look like they where falling on my ice. Equip your boffs with with it, cold fusion flash, and Hurricane Turret, then you have the winter wonderland from Hell. Please note turning your boffs into ice elves to help you, will turn ground battles into a strong competitor for "Most Visual Clutter", but looks so cool...

Personally I've turned to playing with the risian kit. Floor is Lava, Ball Lightning, Agony Field Generator, Orbital Cutting Tractor Beam, and move between Protomatter Munition Deployment, or Gravimetric Traps. I went from the "Ice Queen" To "Admiral Mainachan, WMD (Woman of Mass Destruction)." It's fun, when my boffs don't kill everything on the map before I can activate my second power.....

Thanks again for the thread, I guess the only tip I have is, the non PvP footrace, is always available, situationally it can be the fastest way to a earn daily.

I never had any issues running the ice race. I just turn while still running a few seconds before I plan on actually starting to turn. Once you get used to that, it really is easy, at least in my opinion. Do your DOff missions for more Ornaments, even when you can't play. They add up over the span of the event and only take a minute or two to queue up and turn in.

Agreed, re: the race. Just have to time it as so. One year, I ran a few practice runs, and got a feel for it.

@maina That sounds like a sweet combo of modules! =D Also, call me odd if one must, though I find the solo race pretty enjoyable. Then again, I tend to find the winter wonderland events pretty fun as a whole.

I really enjoy the Winter event as well. It is something different and has a lot of variety of things to do. Some longer, some shorter, but pretty much something for most. I am still hoping that we get the Breen Capital Ship at some point. There are way bigger ships in the game so I don't get why that wasn't ever used as a reward. Maybe the ship model needs an update. I don't know, but I really would like that ship at some point.

Wasn't the Capship an upscaled old version of the Rezreth? Or is the Rezreth implied to be the Capship now?

Not odd at all, I solo race the event almost in it's entirety, I enjoy all the events to various levels and play them, but the solo race is my go to.

RP wise, I'm a joined Trill. The Trill (Amaterasu) has a passion for Long Distance Running and the effects on the joint metabolism has on their systems when running (runners high). Plus it keeps the hosts healthy. The worlds she has ran on over the last century are numerous and though she tries to find "strange new worlds" to run on, more often than not, she's dodging wildlife and dealing with Gorn who think they are dogs and the mailman just showed up.......

I'm not sure. I have heard people confuse one for the other but from what I remember, they both look very different from one another. The Capital Ship would be more like a Heavy Dreadnought Warship in my opinion. It was bigger than the Rezreth as well.

If you want to take out entire groups, Flurry is pretty good as it functions like an Autorifle. Most of the winter weapons will function like normal weapons in some form or another. The shotgun one, I believe that is called The Big One, functions like the Adapted MACO pulsewave with the grenade launcher secondary.

So... whichever weapon type you're most comfortable with, pick the winter variant that fits is what I'd suggest. Otherwise... feel free to experiment with them all.

The pie eating contest is in the gingerbread village just besides where Neelix is located. It's offered by a large Breen, it's to the left of the village in the large square.

Interesting. It used to be in the main area of the map, just over from the Tailor, Store, etc. Not sure why they hid it in the Gingerbread Village.

Probably because of it only being one event in the village, Neelix is a rather 'new' addition, so they probably wanted to flesh out the events a bit more. Instead of crowding everyone around the large gazebo. ^^
