Do you use Steam to log into STO on the PC?

peterconnorfirstpeterconnorfirst Member Posts: 6,225 Arc User
Hey STO players on the PC!

I wonder how many of you use Steam for Star Trek Online and intend to use the poll option to get a better idea.

If you sometimes use it or not, or used to use it but no more or vice versa please still participate and select what makes more sense in your case.

Feel free to discuss why you use steam or not but in any case leave your vote!!!

Thanks in advance to all who participate. :)

    I usually play though Steam.

Sometimes I just run the launcher.. but most of my gaming is done through Steam including STO.

I only have ever used the original launcher. I also never have other things running whilst gaming.

Honestly I dunno, I got the game thru Steam but I always use the icon I got on my screen, rather opening Steam and going online that way.

Does steam have to be connected/loged into to be able to play STO?

For example I got Space Hulk and SW Squadrons via Steam and eventhough I also play those games by just hitting the game icon I know that Steam always needs to connected or I can't play.

After my account on steam was c.h.a.c.k.e.d (annoying censorship)... i don't use it to play STO... old launcher is just enough for that.

No, if you just run the STO Launcher, it doesn't start steam. I installed the game through Steam, but if I just go into the Star Trek Online folder with Steam not running and double click the game .exe the launcher opens and Steam does not start. If you install the game through Steam you can play it either with or without Steam.. your choice.

    Standalone.
I hate launchers, they are redundant, bloatware, spam, and spyware.

    Standalone launcher.

Originally bought the game through steam but back then there was no reason to actually launch and play through steam as the updates via that platform are launcher only. A quirk to pretty much every mmo that's on steam.

I don't log in through Steam. I still have to put in my password. But I do launch through Steam. I only use ARC for promo codes.

I generally avoid steam for mmos. Out of the 4 mmos I got currently installed, I only got one cause it doesnt have an option to run it out of steam

    No, I don't.

I added it to my Steam-library though, and that was in 2013 - just to get the Steam-starterpack.

I use steam to start the launcher...

Linking Cryptic and Steam account however is defunct afaik.
Cryptic announced a nifty little feature, released it into the wild, then broke it a mere week in and as far as I can tell is not going to fix it.

Seems to be a theme lately: If it is broken leave it be or remove it. Fixing stuff is for noobs.

    this.
unless there is some reason to go through steam, like a givaway or something there isn't much point in draining windows resources. Heaven know windows does a great job at that through memory leaks and running TRIBBLE in the background

I go through Arc. I do have Steam for my other games I play and even Origin (Haven't used that in years).

Steam is for some old games I like to play. I don't do new games. If I see one I like I'll get it after the price comes down.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.

I used to use steam to play STO before moving to the console version since my Laptop is pretty old and can't play games like it used to, my last STO character on the PC version was made around when AoY first came out.

A long time ago I tried STO but then left it for a few years. Then the Steam group I was with cycled into the game and since there was a problem with my old account I made a new one via Steam (they soon left but I stayed). Shortly thereafter my old account was successfully recovered so I had one on each.

Then there was the big update they did in the fall (either last year or the year before) which broke the Steam one in some way that I could never fix even after redownloading everything so I dumped it and just used the ARC version ever since.

No, I don't launch STO through Steam. I hit Win-R and launch the executable directly, only bothering with the ARC launcher if there's some specific reason to.

I love Steam. I've been on it for years. I have a huge library of Steam games. And I especially adore Steam reviews, because they are the voices of my fellow gamers, whom I trust far more than anyone else.

But the idea that I would re-install STO just to use Steam is laughable.

    Why would you re-install STO?

When you install Steam, it creates your Steam Directory in the place you designate during install. You then go to that directory, Steam\steamapps\common and move your Star Trek Online folder to that location.

You then go into steam and tell it you want to install Star Trek Online. It will go to install, detect the game is already there and use those files. You will then be able to either launch STO through Steam or you can still run the stand alone launcher and play without.

A lot of people don't understand how Steam works with Star Trek Online, but it's just an overlay.. nothing more. There is no such thing as a 'Steam account' for example, Steam just uses whatever information you put into the launcher. You can use that account through Steam, through Arc, or stand alone. There is absolutely no difference between an account created through the launcher, with Steam or with Arc. Steam is just like Arc, it's nothing but an overlay that lets you access friends lists and other features while you play. The core game and your account is 100% the same across all PC Platforms.

I clicked yes, but after reading some other comments, I think no. I downloaded the game through Steam but I think I log in through Arc. It's just a clickable icon to me.

Never. Why would I? The 'original' launcher works fine.

I mean I've got Steam open when I play, but I always just go through Arc. I'd PREFER not to go through a launcher at all, but apparently that simply won't do with modern gaming. Companies just LOVE their launchers. -_-

Again, not true at all. You can just run the Star Trek Online.exe right out of the folder and the game will run without Arc. The same applies to Steam.

I used the ARC launcher for about 2 weeks after I started playing at the start of this year, but have been using the STO.exe directly since then ( ARC wouldn't log in,and after checking the help forum found out that there was an issue for some players and to just bypass it ).
