Shuttle Races

cnroddball#1769 cnroddball Member Posts: 6 Arc User
We have so few opportunities to use our shuttles. It's a danged disappointment really. But what if we had shuttle races? I know it's been about a decade or so since this was last suggested but it's a really good idea. Racing through the caves on Risa, some booby-trapped tourist trap on Ferenginar, intense plasma storms in the Badlands, an asteroid field literally anywhere or some crazy ridiculous race course of exploding suns and stuff controlled by Q. I actually like to race through the asteroids around Qo'Nos at full impulse sometimes. Plus with nothing to do outside of missions at so many of the planets in the galaxy, this could make for a bunch of new TFOs. Could even style it a bit like Mario Kart, but instead of red shells and stars, we get to use our weapons to try and disable opponent's engines for a sec or something.

Thoughts? Criticisms? Pitchforks and torches?

We have one shuttle race in the Delta Quadrant story arc: The Hodos Shuttle Race or something like that.

Just one? We use our shuttles for a grand total of what, five things in the entire game? It's such a waste. Some people have forgotten about their shuttles entirely. O_O

I love the idea of shuttles personally and would love a complete shuttle revamp though I don't really see it happening. I also don't really see races being a thing considering how poorly racing is implemented into the game currently. Also, Cryptic has little reason to invest into shuttles since there would be little return in the form of increased revenue.

Any development not spent on things relating to T6 ships is probably a complete waste of resources in Cryptic's eyes. That's why we don't get new bridges, ground battle zones or adventure zones, ground patrols, new shuttle content of any kind at all, or anything that doesn't specifically boost c-store ship and lock box/promo box sales.

I suspect the problem with this is that there is no 'first to cross the finish line' system the game can utilise.

This is why the 'Powerboard' race during the summer event and the Ice-Race game during the winter event both have a 'Grab the Flag' system for race completion.

This can be done with a ship/shuttle. "Scan the Flag" instead of "Grab the Flag" it would only need be a node like a R&D material in a space map.

As far as maps go here there's a few I can think that can be used for this. The old Delta Patrol one. The asteroid part of Delta Flight, just add a loop around back to start. Then the asteroid one in the Cardassian arc, the one with the swarmers.

I honestly miss the Shuttle version of Fleet Alert. Instead of 5 ships, you had 20 shuttles. It was a total blast zipping around in my Aeon blasting Star Fox music while joining my fellow pilots in fighting off capital ships.

And Suttle Fleet Alert seemed to be rather popular from what I remember. Never took long to pop when it was available.

Ran that recently. Blew up A LOT.
Might work better as a 20 man rather than a 5 man. Just too many things shooting at your shuttle to survive most of the time.

My problem with that one is I'm constantly getting stuck 'against the stratosphere'. I do like the wave top runs on the Walkers. If I could only use that Grappler Console from the T1 NX to trip the Walkers over, i'd really have some fun.

As far new smallcraft, I did some T6 fighters a couple years ago. But everything can be applied to shuttles as well.

The only things that need adjusting that I know of, are the hull modifiers on the Scorpion, and adding the Klingon Cloak to the To'duj, and Romulan Battle Cloak to the Scorpion.

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline/#/discussion/1241963/t6-fighters-the-pipe-dream

Of course there's also the possibility of doing it more T5U, and the trait become an inherent system in the smallcraft, or maybe lose it and turn it into a console.

There's also many canon shuttles that have yet to be made in game, like the Type 6 from TNG and the TMP era shuttle from ST5.

There is one in game we don't have. The Cardillac.

    Races could be fun.

What might also help to make shuttles more useful, is upgrading their stats. Make them equal to escorts or something, ones you can launch from your ship, thereby temporarily abandoning your previous ship.

It would basically looks like this:

You enter ISA in a Star Cruiser, you select a to-be-created ability, your shuttle (with the stats of an average escort like the Defiant or the Shi'karis, or perhaps those of a small cruiser like the Miranda) will launch and from there you continue the mission.

Redocking can be made possible or impossible for the duration of the mission.

While I'm not opposed to races - they could definitely add a new fun element to the game - I think shuttles need to have some additional value in currently existing content as well for it to be really worth it. As for monetisation: there are many shuttles that are currently not playable. With a stat upgrade, they could justify selling them at the price of a T6 ship.

In my stats there in the link I provided. I just beefed up fighters to the higher end hull and shield of some of the lobi ones, like the vaaduar shuttle. Add in a potential for a 3rd weapon, second boff seating with pilot spec. Kal Dono and the Tox Uthat gives us a shuttle with a Temporal spec. Then they could also do Command, MW, and Intel ones.

As far as making them the same as escorts. Perhaps a T1 or T2 one stat wise, maybe as high as a T3. But, nothing T4 and up. That would start making them an escort, instead of a small craft.

The Pergrine is, if I remember correctly from when I last looked it up, something like 17 meters long and 36 meters wide.

The Maquis Raider is one of the smallest escort/raiders in the game, with a length of 60 meters and a width off 66 meters.

Which says they could also do half the stats for a raider for them.

As far as the whole crossing the finish line enigma goes, isn't just putting a...whaddya call'em, the waypoint or whatever from missions that tell you where you need to go an easier and viable option?

I don't have an issue with the current stats of shuttles myself (mine is surprisingly durable with the right skills). I did The Vault mission (Danger Zone playing in the background) with a few people in my fleet just hours ago and had a blast. I know shuttle races would be incredibly more fun.

A while back, around the time that goncra was dumped into the game, I posted a suggestion about using the asteroid pushing concept for a 3v3 shuttle based game of football using grapples and tractor repulsors to drag and push the rock around.

Racing would be victim to ping and lag the same as every other race event in sto where the winner is decided not by the first past a line but the first to be allowed to collect a sparkly and a high chance of being bounced out of bounds during the running of the course.

It is still a good idea within the limits the game and the Internet impose. I wonder if they could copy/paste the powerboard race on Risa over to something shuttle based.

Now to what I said because formatting is so weird on this forum!

I imagine it'd be subject to the same manner of ping and lag as any other TFO or patrol. So I don't see it as an issue.

It would be subject to the same ping issues the board races on Risa have. Maybe even less so, dependent on how many people were allowed to race at a one time. Which would still require a "Scan the flag" like the, "Grab the flag" ending with the board races. That's what that is for, to alleviate the worry of people complaining about being in first on their screen, but their ping puts them in second or third.
