Starting next week, the Section 31 Battlecruiser is coming to Star Trek Online on PC. You'll have an opportunity to obtain it every time you open either an R&D Pack or Duty Officer Pack during this special event.
I'm wondering if/when lockboxes are going to be unlocked across the player's account? I've seen the reedit for that, but then again, that doesn't mean it'd ever happen. I don't know if the Infinity ships are included or not for that matter.
I have two promo ships waiting for this feature.
With the Legendary bundle, there's a few ships I'd like to get that's not part of that bundle. Will this ship be of them? Maybe.
R&D pack...is cryptic allergic to just selling us something? does every nice thing need to be put into the cheapest possible thing to attempt to bleed a wallet dry? like can you not just slap it down into the store, id've gladly given you 50 bucks for it, but eff lockboxes and the fact your the only company to not clue into how stupid this is.
Very nice ship. Too bad I still can't log in from my own computer, and you guys just nerfed my ability to build enough zen/EC to get the ship even if I could log in properly.
Looks cool... till it transforms. Sadly, like the other S31 ship the transformation looks goofy and seems like it exposes more hull to enemy fire than it does in normal mode. Be nice if there was an option to not transform for both ships.
And sad when lockboxes aren't enough money for a company that they need to make a 'premium' lockbox. At this point I'll only consider buying Account Unlock ships. A one off box ship is just too expensive.
Seriously though, the playerbase is getting tired of these gambling promo packs and lockboxes. Take a look at the comments over on /r/STO and on the twitter announcement.
please stop trying to defend Cryptic business practices, when there is nothing to defend. Cryptic needs or wants money, it is just a simple fact. Each week, there is now a gamble promo box, it is time for Cryptic to stop that, most of the players are not fools, well I hope so.
Even, if you are a white knight, it is impossible to defend the indefensible.

Ships in STO are released by tiers, and each tier generally follows a set pattern
Tier 1 ships are leveling/zen store ships. These are ships that player could logically get/be flying in-universe following canon. Things like the Galaxy, Defiant, Intrepid, Sovereign, etc. etc. fit into this category.
Tier 2 ships are lockbox and event ships. These are ships that are generally enemy faction ships that our players wouldn't normally have access to in-universe. Things like Tholian, Breen, and Tal shiar ships. T2 ships also include things like the Risian Corvette, which a Federation civilian could possibly get, but a Fed captain wouldn't be flying it around as the hero ship of a starfleet focused show.
Tier 3 ships are R&D promo ships. These include ships of which there is only one of in canon(Annorax, Jellyfish, Franklin) certain ships CBS doesn't want in the hands of players normally(the T6 Connies), and enemy dreadnoughts/flagships.
We know many of these restrictions re placed on the game by CBS for "IP reasons", and the Sec 31 drone ship wouldn't be a ship that a normal character would logically be flying around, since Sec 31 is a rogue organization akin to the Tal Shiar, thus, it could never have been in the C-Store.
I undestand the viewpoint, and it does make sense, however i'm just really, really, really tired of all the gambling boxes. In monetary terms i'm probably a sardine (maybe even a guppy), compared to the whales that gobble all this up. Add to it the fact that i prefer to play KDF, and i haven't had much, in terms of ships, where i would actually spend money on. If not for the event ships (some are really nice) i would have very little interest in playing the game.
This ship doesn't feel like a Promo level ship. In fact it doesn't even feel like a lockbox or lobi level ship. The last time something like this happened was with the franklin, and although that was still a terrible choice for a promo ship, it atleast felt like it was Lobi or lockbox level.
This however feels like someone took the idea for a Z store ship and slapped it into a promo box. THe only noteworthy thing about this ship is its swarm mode, otherwise its just bland and un interesting. While I dislike promo boxes in general I do own 2 promo ships, and I find this to be so undesireable. I could maybe see myself purchasing it at an inflated zen price like 5k or 6k, if they tossed it into a bundle like the picard bundle, but in its current state I think its a waste of zen and ec to get it.

As much as I am annoyed at cryptic...this does make a lot of sense to me. In a twisted ill never have enough money to get these ships ever kind of way, but it does make sense.
Not going to follow in on the hate train with how this ship is obtained. I would like to offer up an idea instead to Cryptic of a sales model that could appease the player base while also keeping with the larger micro transaction sales the game is aiming for.
You design the Chance system ship you want the player base to go after, the bigger money maker for you. A bit better stats, a few extra bells and whistles that will temp the players to go after it. Than at the same time release C-store versions, doesn't have to be the same ship. Like in this instance with this ships Swarm mode. Take some older T-5 ships Like the Caitian and Klingon Carriers, with a Rom Carrier and release those with the ships special Swarm mechanic.
You are than putting out ships in both areas, Updating older ship models, changing a few things on them to give them just the bright refit feel, and there you have two roads where players will be spending money.
Personally I would buy a Carrier Pack with that swarm Mechanic so much faster than going after the Chance ship, but having played with those ships it could, and would for some temp them to try for the Chance ship you put out. To have the one that is just a little better.
Just a Free idea that this fan of the game is putting forth.
Space is vast, it's wonderful and maddening. Yet in that madness is some of the greatest beauty I have ever seen.
Lots of big money grabs by Cryptic lately via various methods. Is this a first where Cryptic has combined two gambling mechanics: R&D & DOFF packs for a gamble ship? Makes me wonder why? It doesn't increase the odds of winning btw.
Very cool looking ship, intriguing components of the ship, but I think I'm done spending till there's another TOS recruitment event or one that's offering the same rewards & something is done to level-out some of Cryptic's anti-KDF approach. I'll just play on cruise-control for awhile. Good luck to anyone gambling for the cool ship though!
I do not gamble for anything. Gambling to me is a waste of funds. Better to save than gamble.
Very VERY true, let alone if I gamble at like a casino at least there are official regulated odds. I've fallen to the temptation of Cryptic's gambling a few times throughout the years & most times bad losses, a couple of times wins. However, without the gambling none of those type of ships enter into the game I think until Cryptic changes their methods for legal reasons or willingly.

Gambling can be quite fun when you do win however. Just do it in moderation and it's generally not a problem. I usually do the collect up for things approach myself as well...but once in a while, gambling can be fun too.
I managed to snag the Section 31 Science Destroyer like that some months back. I was opening lock boxes on a whim, and for once in my life actually got lucky. Very startling.

Nice! Which also makes me wonder I wonder if there will be any console synergy perk between that Sect 31 Sci Destroyer you won & this Sec31 Drone Battlecruiser?

Interesting question. I've never bothered using the unique console; mainly I run it as a Sci-heavy escort, if that makes any sense.
Atlast a proper carrier. I think dark mode is a fancy name for a standard cloak, visual effects ain't bad.
Loving the scaffold effect unveiled as the swarm mode activates too.
This is a nice addition and there's definitely a market for onscreen ships.
Now kindly shove loads of scorpions into the D'deridex empty Central hull space so we can watch them deploy in a similar way haha. I don't mean to be negative but it would be great to get a romulan cstore carrier.
But really, my romulan is on hold because there is only 1 carrier that is relatively inaccessible because it's not cstore.

And seriously - aren't we getting a promo ship every 3 months? Jellyfish was released around 2. December, so it's actually time for another promo.

Try selling a ship to the opposite faction to let up the pressure on that Dil/ex and let some of the adjustments take hold. LOL!
Well, that Gif is pretty and different.

Account unlock?
No?
Pass.

Thanks, but no thanks.
And after the recent changes to Admiralty, I may just avoid supporting the game at all anymore.

Can I have? I'll pay 3000 Zen for one XD
