Is BO broken?!

I bought an Ateleth, the other day, just for the Beam Overload Trait. To my horror, however, it appears to be horrendeously broken. Why, you ask? Because, while parsing my runs, just to test the build, I discovered that my CritH dropped to an abysal 20% (Sic!) And that's on my Rom, with a native crit rate of >50%.

Did a few more tests, and the result is invariably the same: overall crits hover around almost exactly 20%. Like something is keeping it locked at 20%. Mind you, my crits are usually between 50-70%.

Something's fishy.

    This is.. interesting.

I searched everywhere and can't find any other report of this happening.

I was just today considering getting this trait.. I had not heard of any bugs with it so far but if you figure out what's causing it please do share.

If I can find any more info I'll be sure and pass it along.

I tested too whether it was the Ingenuity Trait perhaps. So, unslotted it; crits went from the almost fixed 21.1% to 25.49% -- an increase which can be explained by the fact that 'non-fixed' crits occured for the duration when BO was not active.

Slotted FAW again, and got my usual 59.6%.

I'm also thinking... it could be a parser problem. BO used to work on a 1 beam only. Maybe that throws off Combat Meter's calculations?! At any rate, it consistenly lists my overall crith around 21% with builds with BO only.

    That's very possible.

How does it feel to fly? Does it seem like you're still hitting as hard as you used to? The only thing the trait should do is add 5 seconds to your uptime. I would think that if you took a 30% hit to your critical chance, that would make things feel less effective. I know it's not always easy to tell without a parser.. but do your targets still drop as fast as they always did?

if you're using pets and other stuff that cant crit but does a lot of hits, the overall crth will be pretty low since all crit/non crit count for it. you need to check the specific weapon (beam overload in your case) to get an accurate value

It's very, very strange. Looking at the individual player breakdown, all my Spiral Wave Disruptors together, on BO III, were good for 73.96% CrtH. (Terran Task Force Disruptor Beam did a whopping 94.6% (!) even. House Martok Disruptor Array a mere 70.5%. Pets a disappointin 6.33% CritH, and made up 1/4th of my DPS. (3 x 75 + 7) /4 = 59%, so still nowhere near the 21.1% overall crits I was listed for.

dont know how its calcualed for scm, but with clr its calculated per hit and not per dps. because you know, its a critical hit. so if you have a lot of low damage non crits from your pets as example contributing like 25% of your dps but 50% of your attacks as example.. ;)

For testing purposes, you might want to try paring the build down to one type of weapon only, parse a run, add a second type, parse, add 3rd, parse, add pets, parse, etc. Or try various combos of trait, same build without trait, etc.

However that one run that shows the 59.6% with FAW on the same build would seem to indicate it's the trait. It's just a matter of figuring out what it's affecting.

Only it wasn't the Trait, as one on the first test I did, was unslot said Trait, so that BO would only be up 10 out of the 15 secs. And then overall crits went from 21.1% to 25.49% -- an increase which, like I said, can be explained by the fact that 'non-fixated at 21%' crits occured for the duration BO wasn't active (those 5 secs).

All good and welll, but every wep (energy only) did crit for at least 70% on BO, on per-player analysis. So, still baffled where that ~20% is supposed to come from.

To parsing ppl with BO only, what does Combat Meter says about your overall CritH?

Could the reduced fire-rate be part of this? With less hits, less crit registering?
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

That should show up in the crits per weps too, right? But it doesn't (all beams >70% crit rate). Besides, my build contains no less than 3 sources to 'hasten' the fire rate (to compensate for the reduced rate you get from BO). Could be that you're right, though. Clearly I have no clue as to how exactly Combat Meter calculates these numbers. So, less shots per, say, minute could indeed count, but is something I would find odd.

Puts on her Avril Lavigne voice, and starts to sing "How Does It Feel?" ;)

Seriously, it kinda does feel the same. I only recently rediscovered BO (as theretofore I was still under the impression it only fired 1 beam only, LOL), so the new playstyle feels a bit different, although DPS felt lowered a but. But that may have been because I was testing in Swarm Advanced, more suited for FAW, I think (switching to all those small targets, when they're defeated, make you lose time, I reckon). I will need to test on other maps, to be able to say anything sensible about DPS. On the one CSA I did yesterday, I did a normal 59K (normal for me, LOL), though.

mystery solved, we got a lot more hits from pets => the low overall crth we had here ;)

Hehe, nija-ed. :) Was just going to say the same. Thanks again!

@baddmoonrizin Feel free to close this, Felisean was kind enough to lay it all out to me. Pets just did endless more hits than me.

Wish we could have a console or trait that increases CritD and CritH to pets... separation and Hangar

Would be nice if pets would inherit the player's crith/crtd. :)

Glad you got it figured out, thanks Mei and @felisean for looking into it.

I am planning to convert one of my FAW alts to an overload build using this trait so it's cool that there isn't in issue with it. Good to know!
