I could never get behind this. It's more than generous that standard beam arrays all have 270 degree freedom of fire which is silly in itself. Even in real 3D combat, you couldn't have more than 1 omni on any given plane, without it being blocked with another hardpoint. One on the highest point of the dorsal and ventral planes is fine, but take into consideration nacelle placement, and most ships would be limited to just 1.

Ship model is completely separate from weapon loadout/placement/firing arc in STO. Consider this, the new Warship Intrepid has 29 weapons emplacements on just the dorsal side of the saucer, yet it only has 3/3 weapons. Omnis should simply use an appropriate hardpoint for the direction they are firing in.

Yes, I know that, which is why I'd prefer more weapons, but accurate arcs. The Intrepid has at least 10 Phaser arrays IIRC, but only a max of 6 in-game if you sacrifice torpedos, and even then torps should be classed as heavy weapons and have their own slots.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

maybe the question could be asked directly to the devs? twitter?

Good luck.. you can try reddit, but getting a developer response on anything is very hard to do.
    Insert witty signature line here.

I don't know, Star Trek has never been the kind of setting in which ships spam dozens of weapons at once. Sure, the Intrepid model has 13 (visible) phaser arrays, but Voyager was always seen firing just one or two at a time. It seems most likely the ship is actually capable of putting it's full power into one beam and the multiple weapons are just to provide arc coverage and redundancy in case of damage. As such, it would be most canon-like to itemize that as a single weapon with 360 coverage.

But of course, that's entirely hypothetical either way, since they aren't going to rip out the entire gear system to put in something entirely different. We're pretty much stuck with the current abstraction of front/rear slots and at most they might add special slots to that base, like the experimentals.
