I haven’t been a very dedicated user of visuals. Every now and then I get an interesting vanity shield to try out but it never occurred to me to play around very seriously with engines, etc.
Today I was “scrue-ing” (<- really, they edit that word?!) around and fit a Breen impulse and shield to visual slots while fitting other gear to the space set of my KDF Destroyer. Then it hit me: Highlighted Breen gear in visuals registered 2/4 on the set? Sure enough, the equipped space set still held its 2/4 value on the menu in addition to the Breen visual 2-set.
SO LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT:
This entire time, I could’ve fit... say a 2, 3, or 4-set to my space set while ALSO fitting a 2 or 3-set to my visual and getting the set benefits of BOTH the equipped Space set AND the Visual set?!?!

If it indicates you're getting a set item bonus from items in the Visual Slot, that is a tool tip bug. If you check your actual stats, you will find that no bonus is actually being applied.
They're purely visual.
