Why do I have 8 boffs at lvl 28?

I played back in 2013/2014, and returned to playing just recently. I started a new KDF character and I have not bought anything with zen or dilithium for this character.

I have claimed the things from the zen store that I could claim, which were apparently available account-wide from stuff I bought before. I don't remember what I bought back then but looking at the store it seems to be just a few ships.

I have no idea why I have 8 boffs at lvl 28! I thought buying extra boff slots was NOT an account-wide purchase?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought when they did away with subscriptions, they changed it so everyone gets the "gold" officer slots (that is, 4 to start, 2 at 10, 2 more at 20, and 2 more at 50)

My friend is playing along with me, and they have never played this game before. They are also lvl 28, and they have 5 boff slots.

Sounds like you were at some point 'subscribed' to the game.

I'm not subscribed now. Does being a subscriber in the past have permanent benefits?

Yes, you retain the benefit after the subscription expires.
