need help choosing VADM Starfleet ship

enigmachad#4351 enigmachad Member Posts: 30 Arc User
I am at level 64 and cannot finish up Delta Rising without a better ship. I have my VADM token left but need helps choosing between Galaxy Refit, Intrepid Refit, or Defiant Refit. Currently using Advanced Escort, and have active Stargazer class, Envoy class, and Constitution and Miranda class sitting in dry dock. I don't have Zen or fleet credits to get something else. Is any of the 3 good to use for Delta Rising and Iconian War? Or should I spend some money on Zen and get something better.

Well the first item you should start by identifying is your Profession; Galaxy refit likely be good for an Engineer, the Intrepid a Science, and the Defiant a Tactical Captain.

Galaxy Refit is a ship that can take a more hit's; and the Defiant Refit certainly with 1-2 Dual Canon deals out a lot more. With Heavy Cruisers (Beams &/or Torp) &/or Science Vessels (Beams & 2nd Deflector) so focus your Beams on Fire at Wil with other abilities. Both the Galaxy or Defiant can be quite capable as ship, as can the Interepid if your heavily invested in SCI skills.

    Advise to consider:

The challenge to FOCUS on is upgrading Gear/Equipment beyond Mk XII Very Rare! You'll want to ensure at least your forward bank of Starship Weapons is upgraded to Mk XIII, and well onto XIV, with a goal of XV ultimately. Also if your able to skip ahead to the last Mission of Iconian 'Midnight', it has an amazing a 3 piece Space Set the Sol Defence is great; with all 3 pieces offers a very nice Repair Nanite heal regardless of class.

NOTE: If you join a Fleet you'll also be able to get advise from other players, or possibly in your Fleet's Armada. You'll also be able to purchase Fleet weapons/gear that come at a slightly higher 'Ultra' quality than most crafted gear. Also check the exchange/auction for low priced 'Ultra' gear, it can 'sometimes' be affordable especially at lower Mk II-VI, especially if you level gear as you progress thru the ranks.

There is also a currently a free Elachi Tier 6 Ship give away event going on now! o:)

NOTE: It is still worth doing even if getting started late; because there is a buyout option. So read the 2nd link above, as it may allow you to get a nice T6 ship for all characters, for only a few hundred ZEN especially if you can complete 12-15 days of the 20.

Buying a T6 ship that you like for your Faction is always Nice but wait for a Ship Sale of 20%; there is a lot of choices and several T6 ships have nice Starship 'Traits' that help you along. There is also 2-3 free T6 ship events usually each year Winter (December), Anniversary (early February), and then again in Summer (June/July) so check the Calendar under the HAIL 'Open Mission Journal' option of the Minimap. It also gives the EVENTS tab on 2nd selection to get details about current events.

Sometimes at Christmas there is also Tier 2-5 CSTORE Ship giveaway's; along with several other items but varies each year.

Finally consider starting a Jem Hedar toon as they are given a T5U fully upgraded Ship out of the Box; it also starts the Character at 60, and includes several Specializations advanced. Otherwise a Temporal Starter Pack or Jem Hedar Vanguard Starter Packs are also nice options to Consider. Regardless the ship you choose if you maximize Universal Consoles efficiently; several intermix TAC/ENG/SCI benefits or at least 2 in 1.

Hope some of that helps you; and wasn't too much. Here is a similar thread with several similar questions and useful answers within it:

I think you've just been hit by the game's scaling difficulty as you approach end game rank and perhaps also by how you've built and are using your ship. Piloting (positioning and timing / use of boff and captain abilities) and build (choice of bridge officer abilities as well as gear selection and skill tree) are all of more importance now than playing at lower ranks.

All great advice above. Also pay particular attention to the advice in the other 'do I need to buy a new ship' thread that covers some common but important advice that can make a big difference.

You shouldn't be playing with the white gear that comes with your ship nor can you get away with using the Mark II - IV gear you started with many ranks ago that carried you to level 50. Things hit a lot harder starting at about level 60.

You could very well be able to play through using any of the ship choices you named. Tier 6 ships, on average, will have more desirable boff ability layouts than these ships but there's no reason you can't replay a few missions for better gear (such as the Sol Defense set mentioned above) as well as other items. Have a look at this https://sto.gamepedia.com/Episode_replay. I believe after reaching L65 you should also be able to skip ahead for some other gear that works well together. Choosing phaser as your energy type will probably make life easier sooner.

Here's my take on the ships you've mentioned - Galaxy Refit, Intrepid Refit, and Defiant Refit:

Defiant Escort- faster paced game play that relies upon good piloting with by far the most damage potential but also the most squishy. Your offence is good piloting, spike damage and maneuverability and these are also your best defense. Cannons and turrets. If you like fast paced precise game play this would be a good choice.

Intrepid Science Ship - will work best with a skill tree invested into science and torpedoes, although it's perfectly possible to use a skill tree with some science that's still tactical leaning that will serve you well with ships such as the other two you mentioned. Some attention to detail required to work optimally as your offence is now science abilities and a carefully selected torpedo with a secondary effect. More tanky than the escort and a different style of game play altogether.

Galaxy Cruiser - while lacking a bit with only a lieutenant tactical boff position, provides more than enough engineering positions to double up on things like emergency power to weapons and slot some pretty heavy heals such as auxiliary to SIF, reverse shield polarity, and engineering team. Very tanky and a slower paced more graceful style of game play.

So welcome to the club that involves some blowing up (re-spawning) that'll get you thinking. We've all been there. Good incentive to sort a few things out. Lot's of advice is available here to accelerate things so you can grab some mission rewards that work well together and hopefully stick it to the bad guys and have more fun.

What are your current weapons? Single beams, dual beams, cannons?

Are they all the same type, like Phasers?

    What are your consoles?

Do you like the type of weapons and ship you have now? Cannons can be fun but it's harder to keep them nose-on-target and doing damage. Single beams work best with broadsiding.

Intrepid, it's admiralty card is beter than the other two. Any of the actual ships are good enough for end game.

i have been trying beams and torpedoes. I had luck earlier on with mines. i looked at my counsels and other items and did a few more missions ie Yesterdays War and Future Proof. My level Advanced Escort seems to be better now. Thanks for the input.
