Funny Pic from Star Trek Email

So, I receive regular emails from startrek.com and this one came today. There is an image in the email linking to a Dragon Con group of Trekkies. The main pic (linked below) shows a young man dressed up as a JJ-Checkov, and he's located in the top left corner of the image... What I'm wondering, and the reason for posting is, what the heck is he staring and smiling at...
