Star Trek Adventures Game Design Challenge

I don't get it. I just don't get it, and I am not the only one. There is literally no explanation as to what Cryptic expects. I verified the website and concluded that the third party company designs board games. Ok, so? It still doesn't tell me what Cryptic expects us to do.

I get that they want us to write up to four pages, but there is zero examples of the format they expect in return. I have never heard of Mophidius before yesterday, and I have zero knowledge about what their games are or how their stories for their games are written.

Because of that, I won't participate. Simply because I don't understand what they want, or how they expect us to create this story.

Hopefully someone here can explain to the millions of us who have never even heard of Mophidius before, how we present what Cryptic has [somewhat] asked.

They tell you how best to proceed in the last paragraph. :/

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11245853-star-trek-adventures-game-design-challenge!

"Four pages is a short amount of time to get a full story in, so make sure your storytelling is as efficient as possible. You can submit the entries in any format, but you should really take a look at an STA book at your friendly local game store for some good ideas on how to proceed. We can’t wait to see what you come up with, Captains! When your submission is ready, send it to community@crypticstudios.com."

With all due respect, I can read. But no, it does NOT explain anything. Telling me to go to a store is not an explanation. We want to know: what is the FORMAT. They do NOT explain anything at all in that regard.

Obviously, one would have to consult Modiphius to find out those details. As the blog suggests.

Thanks garaks31. Ok, so if this is what it is, I won't participate. Thanks for the info. I didn't realize Adventures was not a word used in a regular way in this case, but an actual definition for something in the Star Trek universe.

    > Going to be honest, I find this article confusing as well. The article doesn't say anything about what exactly the "ruleset of Star Trek Adventures by Modiphius" are. I've never heard of them either, so no idea what something like that even means.

The game was announced over 2 years ago and the STO devs have been livestreaming playing it. The USS Sally Ride Admiralty ship is a tribute to another group who live streamed playing the game as well.

As valoreah said, I too have never watched any livestreams related to that. In fact, I didn't even know it existed, and a lot of people don't either.

I wouldn't mind seeing them try converting some of the missions in STO into a format that can work with the game. Or maybe someone can come up with a scenario involving Admiral Zelle, who's now pretty much an unused character standing in T'Nae's office on 39-S.

While the blog post is short, one thing is pretty clear: unless you own the rulebook you shouldn't really bother with this. As it says, your story must adhere to the rules; but without having the rules to consult, there is no way to write your story accordingly.

So hey; if you have the book, go for it!

Game rules have no impact on story, for any tabletop RPG. The only thing you might need is the format to put the story in and they provided links for that.

The blog specifically says the story has to be able to run inside the ruleset of the game. Are you saying the blog is incorrect in that statement?

Pretty much this. It's a way to try to get people interested in buying the rulebook on a game the devs play.

You know... This is awesome... What would be more awesome is if we had some way to create adventures that actually take place within STO... Oh wow... we could even share them with other players... Ooh ohh… I know... It could be called "The Foundry!" and...

    ...oh wait...

    ...nevermind.

    ^ THIS.

But apparently it's too hard for the management people to actually assign routine maintenance on a popular part of their own game more than once every 5 years - - so how about doing the same story telling thing with another game that they DON'T have to think about! :s
