Fastest Game on Ice

I know the Winter Event is still several months away, but this is for @tomilak , who has difficulty with the curves on the track. I'd like to try to help.

I used to be just like you. I wouldn't even try the race and lost several Breen ships because of it. But then one day I determined that I was going to do it. I read all the tips and then dove in. It took several tries the very first few times I'd do it, but I finally got to where I could 'win' the race every time. My first WE ship was the Rezreth and I haven't looked back since.

First, I run in shooter mode. I started out doing the jump at the curves. When I would reach a curve that I knew I wouldn't be able to run around I would jump, pull my had off the kb and turn my mouse so that by the time I hit the track again, it would be in front of me, and off I'd go again. There are also places in curves where you can run onto soft snow at the inside of the curve and stop sliding that way, the boundaries are pretty generous beyond where the markers are.

Later on, I learned to drift the sharp curves so there was no jumping at all. The way I do this is I'm still running in shooter mode, and when I approach a curve I turn my mouse so the next straightaway is in front of me and my runner drifts around the curve instead of sliding off it. This method takes some good timing, but it works too.

There are also places where you can run straight even though there are some curves in it, like the part where there are 'S' curves, just run straight through the middle of those.

There are places you can simply 'cut' curves too, as long as you don't cut them outside the invisible boundaries. This helps a lot with some curves. You'll learn them if you keep trying.

Anyone else want to chip in some tips for tomilak or anyone else who has trouble with this race?
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything. :D

Some tranformations, if you poke Q before starting, also help do the race easier

I heard about that, but never tried it. I may just for the lulz.

You don't need shooter mode, though if that helps you get thru it, by all means use it. What's really needed is knowing the track, it's best to try to turn before a curve so that you slide into the curve rather then off it, also you don't have to max speed all the time, just sprint during the long straight sections and jog rest of the way, you should have decent lead on the NPC.

Shooter mode definitely helps me. :) Everyone has their own system of running the race and they're all valid.

What works for some won't work for others, but we try to help as best we can.

Indeed. I just wanted to clarify that "shooter mode" isn't a must have.

It's hard to help someone who has completely given up and doesn't even try anymore. In these cases, we need more information. Based on what @tomilak has described, a video capture of a couple of attempts would really help so we can break down exactly what's happening and give detailed analysis and feedback. Because frankly the race is so easy for so many people that we can't even fathom how or why someone would completely give up. We need to see things from the perspective of the player that needs help. Maybe even jump in on a discord together to break down what's happening in real time. Because once we're able to help you overcome the race a few times, you'll honestly never look back and probably will never lose a race again.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

Not at all. People must give things a try before they find the right combination that works for them. I'm just hoping that tomilak finds his combination.

You're right. Others on this board are so much better at helping people than I am. But I do my best when it looks like someone needs help and/or encouragement.

I think one of the key things is learning to turn in the direction you need to go after the curve, before you even reach the curve. Your pseudo-inertia will drag you through the curve, and as you gain speed again, you will accelerate in the direction you now need to go.

Shooter mode might be an easy way to do it, because your character is always attempting to move the direction you look. You can also steer like that in RPG mode by pressing both left and mouse key (I think at least that's the default setting for that), so that is another way. But the key is turning the right direction before you really enter the curve.

I've tried using the press both mouse buttons method and it didn't work for me. Too clunky-feeling. That's just me.

If others are comfortable with it, that's fine for them too.

Nobody will remember this thread come December. Better to give advice when it's current.

We can always tag him when the annual Tips and Tricks thread comes again.

Unfortunately even with all the help we're offering, the vibe I got from him was that he just doesn't care anymore and rather than try and let us help him he'd rather just give up until Cryptic "fixes" it.

I can understand the frustration, but that is WHY I initially started the tips and tricks thread. So that we can help people overcome the challenge, and its expanded since then. Other than a certain individual who took issue with it, and later tried basically a hostile takeover by posting his own much earlier to try and use forum rules against me regarding "spam", it has been a resounding success and shows that the community as a whole is willing to help. And I hope that continues for years to come. We may have to take into account console players now as well... but we'll face that when the time comes.

It was that tips and tricks thread, or something like it, that gave me the motivation to try the race out. And I haven't looked back.

Treat it as a rally-car race. Take the foot off the accelerator and turn at the marker before the corner, whilst beginning to walk into the corner. No jumping or rolling required, and it's quite easy using the mouse/joypad in shooter mode. Most NPC's can be beaten just by walking the track.
