in Ten Forward
What a badass trailer holy cow, finally we get some much needed testosterone in movies. Its funny in the beginning they talked about how Maverick passed up a promotion to Admiral several times and is now a Captain. I thought it echoed what Kirk told Picard in Generations. Can't wait for 2020.

      Actually... I think its supposed to be a sequel to the original.

      Yeah I figured that when I heard it has Tom Cruise in it. Either he needs a different character or he has to play an old version of his previous character.

      Iron Eagle was better and Firefox with Clint Eastwood was better than the Iron Eagle(s) .. in my unprofessional opinion.

      I got more of a sense that there was something he did that prevented him from being promoted. Not that he was too badass. He was passed over for promotion because of some reason or another. So I'm wondering if somewhere between the movies Maverick actually messed up and got in trouble, hence no promotions beyond Captain.

      According to the information I've been able to find, it's possible for an officer to refuse a promotion - but this is almost always followed by a "request" that they resign their commission (if they've been in for less than 20 years) or retire (if over 20). And even if you get away with it, there's no guarantee you won't be reassigned to somewhere more suitable to a person of your age and physical requirements (translation: you're not going to be a 50-year-old fighter pilot, except possibly as a trainer).

      I buy it for Riker because Starfleet isn't the US military. Any film claiming to be based in the "real world" has much tighter Suspenders of Disbelief. It was hard enough for me to swallow Maverick not getting court-martialed for his incredibly dangerous flyby stunts - air traffic control for jet fighters is a matter of seconds, and no room for TRIBBLE around - but if they want me to buy him as an active fighter pilot my age, who still doesn't get court-martialed? My suspenders just snapped.

      Wasn't Maverick a Navy pilot? I don't think Major would be in that rank structure.

      Making Captain in the Navy is actually a big deal. The Air Force? nah. This is because the ranks mean different things, Air Force are O3s and Navy captains are O6s(people who tell O3s what to do).

      Based on the use of F-14s in the original... I wanna say Navy. I don't think the Air Force ever used Tomcats.

      He was a Naval officer - LCDR, I think. (Also, it took place at the former Naval Top Gun Academy, at the former Miramar NAS, now MCAS Miramar.)

      Tom Cruise is a garbage human. There is no way he is unaware of the mental and physical abuse visited upon people involved with his religious cult called scientology. Sometimes he makes good movies but that doesn't excuse his complacency in the abuse of his fellow humans.

      Also, "Maverick" was a one note character without any real narrative depth to begin with. There is no reason this movie even needs to be made except for the oversized ego of it's garbage human of a leading man.

      So, yeah, I'll take a pass on this nationalistic America, Frak Yeah steaming pile of ego they will call a film.

      Well that does make sense, seeing as how we saw him mostly in an F-18D (2 seater) .

      Hit the nail on the head Jon, though if he is a still a Captain (O-6) he should have been forced into mandatory retirement once he hit the 30 year point. Yes, a waiver is possible but I doubt they would grant one for a fighter pilot. When Ed Harris' character dropped that little tid-bit it raised an eyebrow. Also, can't tell if that's MCAS Miramar or NAS Fallon NV where the Fighter Weapon School moved to back in 1996. Makes sense if it was the latter. Its all pretty over the top. Anyways, I'll probably check it out if there is nothing else I want to see at the theater.

      My father-in-law was an enlisted personnel counselor aboard the Ranger while Top Gun was filming there, and he can confirm - Tom Cruise is a garbage human. At one point, PO1 Davis had to go to the Captain about the crew's concerns. The captain agreed, but said that unless the Pentagon rescinded permission, or Cruise actually did something actionable, there was nothing they could do about him.
