The best weapon type

kayajaykayajay Member Posts: 1,990 Arc User
I was reading on ESD Chat that Antiproton weapons are now considered the absolute in the worst in the game. I've been using them myself for years (well, technically the Chronitons for my T6 Mobius), because they were always supposed to be the best! Apparently now Phasers have come full-circle and are considered the best type...but there are just so many different ones to choose from. Are Phasers really the best and if so, which particular Phasers...Kelvin, Fleet STO, etc?

I'd really appreciate some advice.

First rule.. don't listen to Zone chat. It's filled with people that think they know everything and actually know nothing.

While yes, it's true that Phaser and Disruptor are the current 'Top Dog,' Antiproton isn't the worst.. nor is it bad. AP is still good, I would personally still rank it ahead of Plasma, and right on par with Tetryon and Polaron.. but they're all good.

Phaser and Disruptor simply have the most boost items and those items are, for the most part, fairly easy to obtain outside of the Synergistic Retrofitting set which can get pricey for Feds.

The current best Phasers are either Sensor Linked Phasers or the new Advanced Phasers which are only available to owners of the Discovery Era Constitution Class.

The top Disruptor Beams are the Sensor-Linked and the Spiral Wave Disruptors.

Keep in mind though, that neither one are 'hugely' better then AntiProton. Yes, the Phasers and Disruptors will parse higher then other energy types, but unless you're trying to push the limits in DPS there is no need to convert your full AP build to Phaser. It would be a costly endeavor if you have a fully upgraded AP build and would not give you hugely noticable results outside of parsed team DPS runs.

I still run AP on my Critical Build Romulan Tactical and that character is still one of my best DPS characters. He is well on par with or in excess of my Phaser characters. On the right build, AP is still incredibly good.

Again.. and I cannot stress this enough..

Don't listen to Zone Chat.

There isn’t much to add as Sea already nailed it. :)

Disruptor and Phaser always seem to have gotten the good stuff the past years (gear-sets) and it does not really matter if you are space rich and can afford the latest Advanced Beams form the Discoprise or its D7 counterpart or if you have to limit yourself to the free sets from stories like Trilithium, Quantum or Nausicaan.

You simply bathe in a multitude of options (story/reputs/lock-box/events) if you pick them and can clearly min/max yourself from bottom to top as time goes by if you bet on those horses.

None Dis or Pha builds are certainly no fail and you can of course beat everything the game throws at you as well with those but if you intend to squeeze all out of it it is simply hard at the moment to find record runs with other energy types. I'd guess Pol as 3rd (morphogenic set), Pla 4th, AP 5th and then Tet at the last place of the weapon potency chain.

Don't get stuck in the rut of what is 'best'. Unless you're chasing DPS upper limits, all weapons are good and how they perform is based on the build.

I have a build for every energy weapon type and performance difference is barely noticable.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

There are players who boil the math down and work out the best sets/builds and worry about which weapon type is better than the others. However if you check the math and the results, you find that all the discussion of 'best' tends to focus on things which are 2% better than 'second best' and not a huge amount better even than 'worst'.

So unless you are a math freak and/or in a competition to win highest DPS awards, you can ignore worst/best and concentrate on the things that really matter:

    - What is most fun/entertaining for you to use. Like the looks, the sound, the color of weapon X? Use it.
    - What is reasonably effective and affordable/accessible to you. 'The best' often costs 5x as much.
    - What thematically suits your captain, build, or ship concept.

There are also things that make far more difference than weapon type in your build:
    - Proper skill/trait selection
    - Piloting skill and experience; how you fly your ship and use your abilities
    - BOff bonuses, good skill selection, a console/ship set that supports the build

Basically, match your build and your ship to your playstyle, and get good at that play style, and you will be effective with any weapon at all.
